The Crisis begun as, and has always been, the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was founded in 1910 by W. E. B. Du Bois (editor), Oswald Garrison Villard, J. Max Barber, Charles Edward Russell, Kelly Miller, W. S. Braithwaite, and M. D. Maclean.[2]The Crisis has been an influential magazine of record for African American readers since 1910, and is still in print today.
The Crisis has been, at various times during its 100+ year run, a periodical record of current events, a sounding-board for the opinions of African American social and political leaders, and a site of literature development and showcasing.
Beginnings and the DuBois era
The original title of the magazine was The Crisis: A Record of The Darker Races. From 1997 to 2003, it appeared as The New Crisis: The Magazine of Opportunities and Ideas, but the title has since reverted to The Crisis. The magazine’s name was supposedly inspired by James Russell Lowell’s 1844 poem, “The Present Crisis;” the suggestion to name the magazine after the poem supposedly came from noted white abolitionist Mary White Ovington, one of the NAACP co-founders.

Everyone is patently aware of the sudden rise of ISIS in Iraq, Syria and Libya, not only because it is in our news almost every day, but because so many young Muslim men and women have left from our own countries to join it since June of last year. There is a huge confusion in the West concerning who this group is, where they came from, where they gain their authority, and whether they are truly Islamic. Jay will unpack these questions, suggesting that in order to understand this group we will first have to understand the very foundations of Islam itself, something he will attempt in this workshop, followed by what he believes our responsibility is as Christians with this most ‘radical’ of groups. www.capitalismisthecrisis.net Capitalism Is The Crisis: Radical Politics in the Age of Austerity examines the ideological roots of the "austerity" agenda and proposes revolutionary paths out of the current crisis. The film features original interviews with Chris Hedges, Derrick Jensen, Michael Hardt, Peter Gelderloos, Leo Panitch, David McNally, Richard J.F. Day, Imre Szeman, Wayne Price, and many more! The 2008 "financial crisis" in the United States was a systemic fraud in which the wealthy finance capitalists stole trillions of public dollars. No one was jailed for this crime, the largest theft of public money in history. Instead, the rich forced working people across the globe to pay for their "crisis" through punitive "austerity" programs that gutted public services and repealed wo...
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) Professor Freedman outlines the problems facing the Roman Empire in the third century. The Persian Sassanid dynasty in the East and various Germanic tribes in the West threatened the Empire as never before. Internally, the Empire struggled with the problem of succession, an economy wracked by inflation, and the decline of the local elite which had once held it together. Having considered these issues, Professor Freedman then moves on to the reforms enacted under Diocletian to stabilize the Empire. He attempted to solve the problem of succession by setting up a system of joint rule called the Tetrarchy, to stabilize the economy through tax reform, and to protect the frontiers through militarization. Although many of his policies failed--some w...

Walking in stillness
Spirits move beyond the flesh
Tortured soul in a cage of flesh
Meant to be broken
Running from the truth will set you free,
To see the real life,
Deaf to the voice of the spirit that sets you free
To see the crisis,
These eyes see life through death
