As a player, Matt Busby was discovered by Manchester City and became captain of Liverpool, but after his war service ended in 1945 he became Manchester United manager.
Although Old Trafford was in ruins after wartime bombing, Busby built a team which won the 1948 FA Cup, and were runners up in the 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951 First Division, before finally winning the League in 1952.
That team aged and Busby chose revolution, replacing first teamers with players from the Manchester United youth team. Duncan Edwards made his debut aged 16 in 1953 and went on to be capped by England at 18. In a 4 year period only one player was signed - Tommy Taylor from Barnsley. All other new players were sourced from within. The Busby Babes were born.
The Babes won two consecutive championships in 1956 and 1957. Busby blazed a trail for English clubs, leading his team into Europe in the face of resistance from the national footballing authorities. Falling at the semi-final stage against Real Madrid in 1957 European Cup, there was greater hope for the 1958 European Cup. Manchester United faced Red Star Belgrade in the quarter finals and qualified with a 5-4 aggregate. Tragically on the return flight stopover in Germany, the plane carrying the team crashed on take-off killing 23 people, including 8 players. The Munich air disaster ended the potential of the Busby Babes. Duncan Edwards, England's giant, died at the age of 21.
Heartbroken, Busby continued, and rebuilt his team once more. Struggling in the First Division the team regained some silverware in the 1963 FA Cup final. The signing of Denis Law and the emergence of George Best rejuvenated the team's fortunes. Linking up with Munich survivor Bobby Charlton they formed the Holy Trinity and Manchester United went on to reclaim the First Division in 1965 and 1967.
Falling again at the semi-final stage in the 1966 European Cup, Busby was beginning to think he would never achieve the ultimate trophy that he desired.
Manchester United headed for Europe again, and this time they reached the 1968 European Cup final against Benfica. Busby achieved his target and Manchester United were Champions of Europe.

Sir Alexander Matthew "Matt" Busby, CBE, KCSG (26 May 1909 – 20 January 1994) was a Scottish football player and manager, most noted for managing Manchester United between 1945 and 1969 and again for the second half of the 1970–1971 season. His manager records and longevity at the helm of Manchester United are only surpassed by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Before going into management, Busby was a player for two of Manchester United's greatest rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool. During his time at City, Busby played in two FA Cup Finals, winning one of them. After his playing career was interrupted by the Second World War, Busby was offered the job of assistant coach at Liverpool, but they were unwilling to give him the control over the team that he wanted and he took the vacant manager's job at Manchester United instead.
Born to Alexander and Nellie Busby in a two-roomed pitman's cottage in the mining village of Orbiston, Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, Busby was raised a practising Roman Catholic of Lithuanian ancestry. When he was born, Busby's mother was told by the doctor "A footballer has come into this house today". Busby's father – a miner – was killed by a German sniper during the First World War at the Battle of the Somme, while three of his uncles were killed in France with the Cameron Highlanders.

Matt Busby - Legacy of a Gentleman
As a player, Matt Busby was discovered by Manchester City and became captain of Liverpool, but after his war service ended in 1945 he became Manchester United manager. Although Old Trafford was in ruins after wartime bombing, Busby built a team which won the 1948 FA Cup, and were runners up in the 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951 First Division, before finally winning the League in 1952. That team aged and Busby chose revolution, replacing first teamers with players from the Manchester United youth team. Duncan Edwards made his debut aged 16 in 1953 and went on to be capped by England at 18. In a 4 year period only one player was signed - Tommy Taylor from Barnsley. As a player, Matt Busby was discovered by Manchester City and became captain of Liverpool, but after his war service ended in 1945 he became Manchester United manager.

That team aged and Busby chose revolution, replacing first teamers with players from the Manchester United youth team. Duncan Edwards made his debut aged 16 in 1953 and went on to be capped by England at 18. In a 4 year period only one player was signed - Tommy Taylor from Barnsley. All other new players were sourced from within. The Busby Babes were born.
The Babes won two consecutive championships in 1956 and 1957. Busby blazed a trail for English clubs, leading his team into Europe in the face of resistance from the national footballing authorities. Falling at the semi-final stage against Real Madrid in 1957 European Cup, there was greater hope for the 1958 European Cup. Manchester United faced Red Star Belgrade in the quarter finals and qualified with a 5-4 aggregate. Tragically on the return flight stopover in Germany, the plane carrying the team crashed on take-off killing 23 people, including 8 players. The Munich air disaster ended the potential of the Busby Babes. Duncan Edwards, England's giant, died at the age of 21.
Heartbroken, Busby continued, and rebuilt his team once more. Struggling in the First Division the team regained some silverware in the 1963 FA Cup final. The signing of Denis Law and the emergence of George Best rejuvenated the team's fortunes. Linking up with Munich survivor Bobby Charlton they formed the Holy Trinity and Manchester United went on to reclaim the First Division in 1965 and 1967.

As a player, Matt Busby was discovered by Manchester City and became captain of Liverpool, but after his war service ended in 1945 he became Manchester United manager.
Although Old Trafford was in ruins after wartime bombing, Busby built a team which won the 1948 FA Cup, and were runners up in the 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951 First Division, before finally winning the League in 1952.
That team aged and Busby chose revolution, replacing first teamers with players from the Manchester United youth team. Duncan Edwards made his debut aged 16 in 1953 and went on to be capped by England at 18. In a 4 year period only one player was signed - Tommy Taylor from Barnsley. All other new players were sourced from within. The Busby Babes were born.
The Babes won two consecutive championships in 1956 and 1957. Busby blazed a trail for English clubs, leading his team into Europe in the face of resistance from the national footballing authorities. Falling at the semi-final stage against Real Madrid in 1957 European Cup, there was greater hope for the 1958 European Cup. Manchester United faced Red Star Belgrade in the quarter finals and qualified with a 5-4 aggregate. Tragically on the return flight stopover in Germany, the plane carrying the team crashed on take-off killing 23 people, including 8 players. The Munich air disaster ended the potential of the Busby Babes. Duncan Edwards, England's giant, died at the age of 21.
Heartbroken, Busby continued, and rebuilt his team once more. Struggling in the First Division the team regained some silverware in the 1963 FA Cup final. The signing of Denis Law and the emergence of George Best rejuvenated the team's fortunes. Linking up with Munich survivor Bobby Charlton they formed the Holy Trinity and Manchester United went on to reclaim the First Division in 1965 and 1967.
