Since the invention of the modern automobile, we have been in love with our cars, trucks and motorcycles. It’s hard to think how we could function on a daily basis without a personal car around to take us to the grocery store, movie theatre or over to a friend’s house. This mode of transportation is such an important part of most peoples’ lives that we have no idea how we’d cope if cars suddenly disappeared tomorrow. Sure, most cars pollute and after a decade or so we get rid of the old and bring in a new car – filling up wrecking yards and burnings tons of gasoline in the process. The automobile is so important that rather than develop a whole new mode of transportation we instead focus our energy on creating more efficient gasoline burning engines and new models of electric cars. Nonetheless, the car is an integral part of our lives and our culture.
Of course, many people have often heard the saying (but never really payed any attention to it) that driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Indeed, getting behind the wheel of your ride and heading off to work or some other destination can be very dangerous. Statistically, the number crunchers say that you are far more likely to die driving your car than flying in a plane. The numbers seem to back this up by showing that over 90 people are killed every day in motor vehicle accidents in the US alone. It all makes sense once you think about it. If you think about all the people out on the road and add in distracted and drunk drivers, mechanical failures and bad weather then it’s easy to see why driving can be so dangerous.
But what about the actual sections of roads and highways that seemingly have a high number of accidents and fatalities all year round. That is, it can be bad enough driving on ‘regular’ roads and highways around the world but there are roads which, for whatever reason, just seem more dangerous than the rest. You are probably picturing the classic mountain side road, carved into the rock with minimal safety barriers and exposed to landslides and all the inclement weather you can think of. Yes, those roads are very dangerous, but they aren’t the only ones to avoid driving on.
As part two of our ‘dangerous roads’ series, we look at 10 roads you probably wouldn’t want to drive on. These motorways are found all across the world, in all sorts of environments and at all sorts of altitudes. There are the expected mountain roads – narrow and crumbling where one small mistake means you are going for a very long fall. There are also the remote and isolated highways running through deserts and the vastness of Siberia. There are even the sea level roads which provide their own nasty little surprise that can ruin your day (or life). We guarantee that after seeing this your daily commute will appear to be a walk in the park.

The invention of the road dates back to ancient times thousands of years ago. It was one of the most innovative inventions that connected cities and countries together. Anything that had wheels had an easier time getting by, and it was the birth of road organization as we all figured out which side of the road we would use to move forward. Today, roads are paved with concrete, and man has managed to create roads in the most impossible of spaces, making the world more accessible than ever. However, just because a road can be built, it doesn’t mean that it should. Some roads seem to defy the boundaries that Mother Nature set upon us, but have we ever thought about the fact that the boundaries were set for a reason?
The roads on this list are considered to be some of the most dangerous in the world. Whether they have a high death toll, destroy a multitude of vehicles, or cause a numerous amount of accidents, it is best that experienced veteran drivers who aren’t seeking a thrill use these roads. Some of these roads defy physics and are sculpted on the sides of mountains. While it is a pretty concept, with breathtaking landscapes, they usually mean a pending death should you turn a corner wrong or even go just a few miles over the speed limit. So, is it worth risking losing your vehicle, or even your life by taking these roads? Some people don’t have a choice, as these roads provide the only access to major towns and home.
For example, the Himalayan Road is one of the highest roads in the world, as it sits at over 11,000 feet in altitude. Which means that an impending death awaits on each stretch of road, which is pretty much made of crumbling dirt. A lot of buses and trucks use the road since it connects India with Tibet, so not only do you have the road to worry about, but also the traffic of other cars who may or may not be paying attention to the road. Next up, we have the James Dalton Highway, which has become a legend by itself. The road sits in the most northern part of Alaska, which means it’s icy and cold. Not to mention that the road has a lot of potholes and is used by big oil rigs on a daily basis. Windshields get destroyed from falling rocks, and headlights are knocked out as well. Not to mention that this highway is also in the middle of nowhere, so if you run out of gas, you’re royally screwed. Rental companies won’t even allow renters to drive their cars on the highway, for fear of damage and loss of their product.
These are yet, but a few of the most dangerous roads in the world. Some people have created video channels of luxury vehicles trying out these terrains, with many of them not being able to drive away from the damage inflicted. So, if you see a sign for a road that says, “Highway to Death/Hell/etc.” it might be best if you just turn around and find another route.

Tokyo Bay Aqua Line is a mystery to tourists as it looks like it disappears into the middle of the bay. Onlookers are baffled by its appearance, although the road is actually a bridge/under water tunnel hybrid. In Norway, the Atlanterhavsveien connects eight islands together. So if you ever thought the only way to get from island to island was a boat, prepare to be amazed.
And then there are the roads most people would not want to drive on, while others see them as thrills. Bolivia’s North Yungus Road has been aptly named “Death Road” as it sees over 300 deaths per year. You would think that would scare people off, but with an amazing scenic view it attracts over 25,000 mountain bikers annually. And Egypt’s Luxor-Al-Hurghada Road is literally a death trap, with terrorists patrolling it at all times.
These roads are unbelievable in so many different ways. Whether they were built a certain way or have been taken over by bandits, they’re peculiar and definitely stray from the status quo. But also, dangerous roads act as a challenge for dare devil drivers, thus perpetuating the death toll. Here are some of the most dangerous roads that you need to avoid. Whether these roads have led to major fatalities, lots of accidents, or so poorly maintained that your car may need a tune up and your tires replaced. The automobile is so important that rather than develop a whole new mode of transportation we instead focus our energy on creating more efficient gasoline burning engines and new models of electric cars. Nonetheless, the car is an integral part of our lives and our culture.
Of course, many people have often heard the saying (but never really payed any attention to it) that driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Indeed, getting behind the wheel of your ride and heading off to work or some other destination can be very dangerous. Statistically, the number crunchers say that you are far more likely to die driving your car than flying in a plane. The numbers seem to back this up by showing that over 90 people are killed every day in motor vehicle accidents in the US alone. It all makes sense once you think about it. If you think about all the people out on the road and add in distracted and drunk drivers, mechanical failures and bad weather then it’s easy to see why driving can be so dangerous.
But what about the actual sections of roads and highways that seemingly have a high number of accidents and fatalities all year round. That is, it can be bad enough driving on ‘regular’ roads and highways around the world but there are roads which, for whatever reason, just seem more dangerous than the rest. You are probably picturing the classic mountain side road, carved into the rock with minimal safety barriers and exposed to landslides and all the inclement weather you can think of. Yes, those roads are very dangerous, but they aren’t the only ones to avoid driving on.
As part two of our ‘dangerous roads’ series, we look at 10 roads you probably wouldn’t want to drive on. These motorways are found all across the world, in all sorts of environments and at all sorts of altitudes. There are the expected mountain roads – narrow and crumbling where one small mistake means you are going for a very long fall. There are also the remote and isolated highways running through deserts and the vastness of Siberia. There are even the sea level roads which provide their own nasty little surprise that can ruin your day (or life). We guarantee that after seeing this your daily commute will appear to be a walk in the park.

The invention of the road dates back to ancient times thousands of years ago. It was one of the most innovative inventions that connected cities and countries together. Anything that had wheels had an easier time getting by, and it was the birth of road organization as we all figured out which side of the road we would use to move forward. Today, roads are paved with concrete, and man has managed to create roads in the most impossible of spaces, making the world more accessible than ever. However, just because a road can be built, it doesn’t mean that it should. Some roads seem to defy the boundaries that Mother Nature set upon us, but have we ever thought about the fact that the boundaries were set for a reason?
The roads on this list are considered to be some of the most dangerous in the world. Whether they have a high death toll, destroy a multitude of vehicles, or cause a numerous amount of accidents, it is best that experienced veteran drivers who aren’t seeking a thrill use these roads. Some of these roads defy physics and are sculpted on the sides of mountains. While it is a pretty concept, with breathtaking landscapes, they usually mean a pending death should you turn a corner wrong or even go just a few miles over the speed limit. So, is it worth risking losing your vehicle, or even your life by taking these roads? Some people don’t have a choice, as these roads provide the only access to major towns and home.
For example, the Himalayan Road is one of the highest roads in the world, as it sits at over 11,000 feet in altitude. Which means that an impending death awaits on each stretch of road, which is pretty much made of crumbling dirt. A lot of buses and trucks use the road since it connects India with Tibet, so not only do you have the road to worry about, but also the traffic of other cars who may or may not be paying attention to the road. Next up, we have the James Dalton Highway, which has become a legend by itself. The road sits in the most northern part of Alaska, which means it’s icy and cold. The invention of the road dates back to ancient times thousands of years ago. It was one of the most innovative inventions that connected cities and countries together. Anything that had wheels had an easier time getting by, and it was the birth of road organization as we all figured out which side of the road we would use to move forward. Today, roads are paved with concrete, and man has managed to create roads in the most impossible of spaces, making the world more accessible than ever. However, just because a road can be built, it doesn’t mean that it should. Some roads seem to defy the boundaries that Mother Nature set upon us, but have we ever thought about the fact that the boundaries were set for a reason?
The roads on this list are considered to be some of the most dangerous in the world. Whether they have a high death toll, destroy a multitude of vehicles, or cause a numerous amount of accidents, it is best that experienced veteran drivers who aren’t seeking a thrill use these roads. Some of these roads defy physics and are sculpted on the sides of mountains. While it is a pretty concept, with breathtaking landscapes, they usually mean a pending death should you turn a corner wrong or even go just a few miles over the speed limit. So, is it worth risking losing your vehicle, or even your life by taking these roads? Some people don’t have a choice, as these roads provide the only access to major towns and home.
For example, the Himalayan Road is one of the highest roads in the world, as it sits at over 11,000 feet in altitude. Which means that an impending death awaits on each stretch of road, which is pretty much made of crumbling dirt. A lot of buses and trucks use the road since it connects India with Tibet, so not only do you have the road to worry about, but also the traffic of other cars who may or may not be paying attention to the road. Next up, we have the James Dalton Highway, which has become a legend by itself. The road sits in the most northern part of Alaska, which means it’s icy and cold. Bolivia’s North Yungus Road has been aptly named “Death Road” as it sees over 300 deaths per year. You would think that would scare people off, but with an amazing scenic view it attracts over 25,000 mountain bikers annually. And Egypt’s Luxor-Al-Hurghada Road is literally a death trap, with terrorists patrolling it at all times.
These roads are unbelievable in so many different ways. Whether they were built a certain way or have been taken over by bandits, they’re peculiar and definitely stray from the status quo. From Australia’s desolate Eyre Highway to Italy’s dizzying Passo Dello Stelvio, these are the 10 most unusual roads in the world.

World's Best Driving Roads POV - Susten Pass, Switzerland
During my roadtrip in the Alps with the quest of looking for the best driving road in the World, we drove on the Susten Pass, in the Swiss Alps, that certainly is now in the Top 3 of my best roads ever. I'm driving a 333hp Audi S5 Cabriolet, it's sure is heavy for this kind of roads, but it did a very good job! Other videos will follow! Enjoy! -

After surviving their first few days in India, the truckers face the most dangerous journey of their lives. Rick and Lisa go deeper into the Himalayas and up a new stretch of road called The Ledge--a one lane cliff-side path with a rock wall on one side and a sheer thousand-foot drop on the other. On the perilous journey up, Rick is bullied by local drivers, and Lisa panics while being forced to the edge of a cliff. Alabama highway trucker Dave Redmon joins the team and quickly has the most terrifying ride of his career. With one trucker already beaten by these roads, one of these three veterans may be the next to surrender.[2]
3 "Facing Fears" October 17, 2010
Alabama trucker Dave Redmon stares down the notorious Freefall Freeway in a truck that is in horrible need of repair. Roadside maintenance costs him valuable time and he must face driving the roads with terrifying drop-offs at night or risk being late with his very first load. Lisa heads back up to The Ledge, the narrow stretch of road that caused her to quit the last time she drove it. But this time, a flat tire leaves her teetering on the edge of the abyss. And the crowded roads finally bring Rick to the breaking point. The oncoming traffic sends him into an angry fit on the side of the road and when his greatest rival--the aggressive bus driver--attempts to pass him on a narrow stretch, Rick refuses to back down, even with oncoming traffic bearing down on them both.[3]
4 "Death is a Blind Corner Away" October 24, 2010
When the mountain begins to crumble underfoot, Lisa is in grave danger with an oversized nine-ton load in tow. The unstable road gives way and claims its first victims. Fearing the worst about Lisa, Rick gets news from home that forces him to make a decision that will determine his fate in the Himalayas. Dave's close scrape with the side of an oncoming bus causes the angry occupants to surround his vehicle in a showdown on a narrow ledge, a thousand feet up.[4]
5 "Crumbling Roads" October 31, 2010
After receiving more good news from home, Rick decides to stay. He and Lisa drive higher into the Himalayas than ever before with fragile statues of a Hindu goddess. Rockslides and tight roads force the drivers into dangerous situations, and risk breaking the sacred statue--making the whole trip worthless. Dave tackles the notorious "Ledge" for the first time, all while dealing with an oversized load and oncoming traffic.[5]
6 "Thin Air" November 7, 2010
After conquering the Freefall Freeway, the Cutouts, and the Ledge, all three drivers climb higher, to over 13,000 feet, as they tackle the Rohtang Pass for the first time. Rick delivers a sacred Buddha statue between monasteries. Lisa brings much needed supplies into Keylong--a city normally cut off by snowy winters. Now the snow's melting, and roads are falling apart under rivers and gushing waterfalls.[6]
7 "Cut Off!" November 14, 2010
After a severe storm strands Rick, Lisa, and Dave in Keylong, Rick leads the charge back over the Rohtang Pass, betting against Mother Nature and the dangerous road. Dave and Rick deal with an aggressive Indian driver, and after the drivers hit their boiling point, they all get caught in a landslide.[7]
8 "Overloaded!" November 21, 2010
Tensions hit a high point between Lisa her spotter Tashi, forcing Lisa to think about saying goodbye to Tashi and forging ahead alone. Dave's forced to stop in the middle of his run to deal with his overweight load. Rick battles through illness to make his trip on time, giving everything he can into delivering on time.[8]
