Purpose built as Australia’s capital city, Canberra is a 3-hour drive from both the snowy mountains and the beautiful beaches of New South Wales. It is a city which honors Australia’s past and shapes its future.
With an expansive bush beauty, a relaxed attitude and colorful events, Canberra is far more than a political capital. Designed for a young nation that was just finding its feet, this city is home to many of the country's most important stories; stories that have come to define what it means to be Australian.
At the heart of Canberra’s creation story is Lake Burley Griffin. A long-standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne meant that neither one could be the nation’s capital. Instead, in 1911, the government launched an international design competition seeking a master plan for a brand new city.
The victor, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, won with a garden city design focused on a man-made lake which fits perfectly within the landscape.
When, the nation’s Governor General stood in a dusty paddock in 1913 and announced the name of the new capital, he told the nation that the city had, lying before it, a splendid destiny.
Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.
Canberra is the purpose built capital city of Australia, located in the Australian Capital Territory in the south-east of New South Wales. It is a planned city, with national monuments, museums, and galleries all built around large man-made lakes. A bush capital - Canberra is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors, with excellent cycling, gardens, parks, bushwalking and nature reserves.
Canberra was established in 1913 as the capital for the newly federated Australian nation - this brought the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne for national capital status to an end, after Melbourne had been the capital for the previous 12 years. The Australian Capital Territory was excised from New South Wales, and put under the control of the federal government. The artificial creation of the city was not without critics - cynics have said that it was a "waste of a good sheep pasture".
Canberra is a highly planned city, its primary design conceived by the American architect Walter Burley Griffin, built on the shores of an artificial lake (Lake Burley Griffin). Populated at first largely by politicians and public servants, it took time to develop its own identity and culture. Extensive building of national facilities and a concerted effort to develop public institutions in the city have made it an interesting destination.
Lake Burley Griffin divides central Canberra. The central shopping and commercial area, known as "Civic", on the north side and the parliamentary triangle and embassy area is on the south side. National institutions are likewise divided, examples being the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial on the north side and the National Library and National Gallery of Australia on the south side.
There are suburbs surrounding central Canberra, and also suburbs surrounding several outlying town centres. These town centres are, Belconnen and Gungahlin to the north, and Molonglo Valley, Tuggeranong and Woden to the south. The Australian Capital Territory also has surrounding towns, such as Murrumbateman, which boasts a strong cool climate wine selection. The historic villages of Hall and Tharwa are also on the outskirts of Canberra.
Many people who live in Canberra are not originally from Canberra, having usually moved there to study or take up employment with the Australian Government. A common pattern is that people from other parts of Australia move to Canberra, study or work for a few years and then return to their place of origin or move on to elsewhere. As this means a constant influx of new arrivals to Canberra, you should not be reluctant to ask for directions and the like from locals - they are more than used to it and usually only too happy to help.

Canberra, according to the OECD, is officially the best city in the world.
The Australian Capital Territory has topped Paris, London and New York, as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane in the OECD Regional Wellbeing study results released on Monday.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development looked at nine measures of “wellbeing” including education, jobs, environment and income. Australia topped the countries list.
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of theAustralian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a "Canberran".
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to the American Federal District of Columbia. The ACT, like Washington, D.C. in the United States, is independent of any state, to prevent any one state from gaining an advantage by hosting the seat of Federal power. Unlike Washington, however, the ACT has voting representation in the Federal Parliament, and has its own independent Legislative Assembly and government, similar to the states.
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in Canberra. As the seat of government, the unemployment rate is lower and the average income higher than the national average, while property prices are relatively high, in part due to comparatively restricted development regulations. Tertiary education levels are higher, while the population is younger.

I have been living in Canberra, Australia for 3.5 years and it is time to tell a story about myself in this city. The first time i came here on winter 2012 i actually do not really like this place because how small the city was compare my hometown Jakarta, Indonesia. Coming from a big city to Canberra was a big letdown for me at that time. Canberra is the 6th largest city in AU. Sydney and Melbourne are much better than Canberra.
But then I realized that canberra taught me everything about life. for 3.5 years i have seen different things and it is totally different than Jakarta. It opened my eyes wider. The enviroment of the city made me who i am today.

High strangeness at the Mount Stromlo Observatory, located just outside Canberra, Australia. This is a fish-eye sky cam. Between 4:45pm and 9:35pm strange lights appeared in the night sky. Sunset was at 4:58 PM. The moon crosses the sky, but this light comes from far away and as it approaches from space, it gets much bigger. Only an object travelling toward Earth would do that. The Moon and Sun do not.

An observatory was established in 1924 as The Commonwealth Solar Observatory. The dome built to house the Oddie telescope was the first Commonwealth building constructed in the newly established Australian Capital Territory.
10. Big Splash Waterpark
The only waterpark in Canberra. It originally opened with a 50-metre (160 ft) Pool with a kids pool at the end of it in the late 1960s. The slides were introduced in the early 1980s. Located in the suburb of Macquarie.

Saad and Zahra's wedding was one of the biggest & longest weddings we have covered recently. We spent 3 days in Canberra covering this wedding. First day it was Mehndi function at night in which they had a lot of Dance performances & I have to say Saad's freind Ali's choreography helped groom's side in dominating dance performances.
Second day was Shaadi & then followed by Valima on next night. Their story started when Saad & Zahra first met during Saad's elder brothers wedding in pakistan. They spent a good time there during the wedding & continued to be in touch with each other during their university in Canberra. High strangeness at the Mount Stromlo Observatory, located just outside Canberra, Australia. This is a fish-eye sky cam. Between 4:45pm and 9:35pm strange lights appeared in the night sky. Sunset was at 4:58 PM. The moon crosses the sky, but this light comes from far away and as it approaches from space, it gets much bigger. Only an object travelling toward Earth would do that. The Moon and Sun do not. Extensive building of national facilities and a concerted effort to develop public institutions in the city have made it an interesting destination.

The Australian Capital Territory has topped Paris, London and New York, as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane in the OECD Regional Wellbeing study results released on Monday.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development looked at nine measures of “wellbeing” including education, jobs, environment and income. Australia topped the countries list.
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of theAustralian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a "Canberran".
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to the American Federal District of Columbia. Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913.[5] The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.

As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament House, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital.
The ACT, like Washington, D.C. in the United States, is independent of any state, to prevent any one state from gaining an advantage by hosting the seat of Federal power. Unlike Washington, however, the ACT has voting representation in the Federal Parliament, and has its own independent Legislative Assembly and government, similar to the states.
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in Canberra. High strangeness at the Mount Stromlo Observatory, located just outside Canberra, Australia. This is a fish-eye sky cam. Between 4:45pm and 9:35pm strange lights appeared in the night sky. Sunset was at 4:58 PM. The moon crosses the sky, but this light comes from far away and as it approaches from space, it gets much bigger. Only an object travelling toward Earth would do that. The Moon and Sun do not.

A 54.5 square kilometres (21.0 sq mi) protected area, on the fringe of Namadgi National Park. Consists of a large valley floor, the Tidbinbilla Mountain and the Gibraltar range. The word 'Tidbinbilla' is Aboriginal in origin and is derived from the word Jedbinbilla – a place where boys become men.
05. Telstra Tower
A telecommunications tower and lookout that is situated above the summit of Black Mountain. Also known as Black Mountain Tower and formerly called the Telecom Tower. Rising 195.2 metres (640 ft) above the mountain summit, it is not only a landmark in Canberra but also offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding countryside from an indoor observation deck and two outdoor viewing platforms.
06. National Dinosaur Museum
Australia's largest permanent display of prehistoric specimens, located in Gold Creek Village. The museum's exhibition follows the evolution of life, with a particular focus on dinosaurs. The gift shop stocks a range of natural history books, dinosaur replicas, toys, fossils, crystals, minerals and meteorites.
07. Canberra Glassworks
An Australian gallery and glass art studio open to the general public to view the glass artists working. Opened in May 2007 by Jon Stanhope, it is the largest dedicated glass studio facility in Australia.
08. National Carillon
A large carillon managed and maintained by the National Capital Authority on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated on Aspen Island. Was a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital.
09. Mount Stromlo Observatory
An observatory was established in 1924 as The Commonwealth Solar Observatory. The dome built to house the Oddie telescope was the first Commonwealth building constructed in the newly established Australian Capital Territory.
10. Big Splash Waterpark
The only waterpark in Canberra. It originally opened with a 50-metre (160 ft) Pool with a kids pool at the end of it in the late 1960s. The slides were introduced in the early 1980s. Located in the suburb of Macquarie.

Australia's largest permanent display of prehistoric specimens, located in Gold Creek Village. The museum's exhibition follows the evolution of life, with a particular focus on dinosaurs. The gift shop stocks a range of natural history books, dinosaur replicas, toys, fossils, crystals, minerals and meteorites.
07. Canberra Glassworks
An Australian gallery and glass art studio open to the general public to view the glass artists working. Opened in May 2007 by Jon Stanhope, it is the largest dedicated glass studio facility in Australia.
08. National Carillon
A large carillon managed and maintained by the National Capital Authority on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated on Aspen Island. Was a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital.
09. Mount Stromlo Observatory
An observatory was established in 1924 as The Commonwealth Solar Observatory. The dome built to house the Oddie telescope was the first Commonwealth building constructed in the newly established Australian Capital Territory.
10. Big Splash Waterpark
The only waterpark in Canberra. It originally opened with a 50-metre (160 ft) Pool with a kids pool at the end of it in the late 1960s. The slides were introduced in the early 1980s. Located in the suburb of Macquarie.

Saad and Zahra's wedding was one of the biggest & longest weddings we have covered recently. We spent 3 days in Canberra covering this wedding. First day it was Mehndi function at night in which they had a lot of Dance performances & I have to say Saad's freind Ali's choreography helped groom's side in dominating dance performances.
Second day was Shaadi & then followed by Valima on next night. Their story started when Saad & Zahra first met during Saad's elder brothers wedding in pakistan. They spent a good time there during the wedding & continued to be in touch with each other during their university in Canberra.
