Poeta francés que figura entre los principales representantes del movimiento simbolista. Verlaine nació el 30 de marzo de 1844, en Metz, hijo de un oficial del ejército. Estudió en el liceo Bonaparte de París. Sus primeras obras, entre las que destacan Poemas saturnianos (1866) y Fiestas galantes (1869), se caracterizan por el antirromanticismo propio de los parnasianos. El verso se centra más en los aspectos técnicos que en los sentimientos. En 1870 contrajo matrimonio, pero abandonó a su esposa dos años más tarde para viajar y vivir con el poeta de 17 años Arthur Rimbaud. En 1873 Verlaine, en estado de embriaguez, hirió a Rimbaud de un disparo y pasó los dos años siguientes en prisión. La colección Romanzas sin palabras (1874), escrita durante su estancia en la cárcel, está basada en su relación con Rimbaud. Esta lamentable coyuntura le hizo volver al catolicismo de su infancia y su reconversión inspiró un volumen de poesía religiosa titulado Sabiduría (1881). Verlaine dio clases de francés en Inglaterra de 1875 a 1877 y luego regresó a Francia donde dio clases de inglés por espacio de un año. Intentó entonces, sin éxito, convertirse en campesino, con su alumno Lucien Létinois, al que llamaba su hijo adoptivo y a quien dedicó muchas de las elegías de Amor (1888). Paul-Marie Verlaine (French pronunciation: [vɛʁˈlɛn]; 30 March 1844 – 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.
Born in Metz, he was educated at the Lycée impérial Bonaparte (now the Lycée Condorcet) in Paris and then took up a post in the civil service. He began writing poetry at an early age, and was initially influenced by the Parnassien movement and its leader, Leconte de Lisle. Verlaine's first published poem was published in 1863 in La Revue du progrès, a publication founded by poet Louis-Xavier de Ricard. Verlaine was a frequenter of the salon of the Marquise de Ricard (Louis-Xavier de Ricard's mother) at 10 Boulevard des Batignolles and other social venues, where he rubbed shoulders with prominent artistic figures of the day: Anatole France; Emmanuel Chabrier; inventor-poet and humorist Charles Cros; the cynical anti-bourgeois idealist Villiers de l'Isle-Adam; Theodore de Banville; François Coppée; Jose-Maria de Heredia; Leconte de Lisle; Catulle Mendes, and others. Verlaine's first published collection, Poèmes saturniens (1866), though adversely commented upon by Sainte-Beuve, established him as a poet of promise and originality.

Plot: In 1871, Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), an established poet, invites boy genius Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) to live with Paul and his young pregnant wife, Mathiltde, in her father's home in Paris. Rimbaud's uncouth behavior disrupts the household as well as the insular society of French poets, but Verlaine finds the youth invigorating. Stewed in absinthe and resentment, Verlaine abuses Mathiltde; he and Rimbaud become lovers and abandon her. There are reconciliations and partings with Mathiltde and partings and reconciliations with Rimbaud, until an 1873 incident with a pistol sends one of them to prison. Codas dramatize the poets' final meeting and last illnesses.

Poeta francés que figura entre los principales representantes del movimiento simbolista. Verlaine nació el 30 de marzo de 1844, en Metz, hijo de un oficial del ejército. Estudió en el liceo Bonaparte de París. Sus primeras obras, entre las que destacan Poemas saturnianos (1866) y Fiestas galantes (1869), se caracterizan por el antirromanticismo propio de los parnasianos. El verso se centra más en los aspectos técnicos que en los sentimientos. En 1870 contrajo matrimonio, pero abandonó a su esposa dos años más tarde para viajar y vivir con el poeta de 17 años Arthur Rimbaud. En 1873 Verlaine, en estado de embriaguez, hirió a Rimbaud de un disparo y pasó los dos años siguientes en prisión. La colección Romanzas sin palabras (1874), escrita durante su estancia en la cárcel, está basada en su relación con Rimbaud. Esta lamentable coyuntura le hizo volver al catolicismo de su infancia y su reconversión inspiró un volumen de poesía religiosa titulado Sabiduría (1881). Verlaine dio clases de francés en Inglaterra de 1875 a 1877 y luego regresó a Francia donde dio clases de inglés por espacio de un año. Intentó entonces, sin éxito, convertirse en campesino, con su alumno Lucien Létinois, al que llamaba su hijo adoptivo y a quien dedicó muchas de las elegías de Amor (1888). Létinois murió repentinamente de fiebres tifoideas en 1883. El resto de la vida de Verlaine transcurrió entre periodos de desenfreno alcohólico y periodos de arrepentimiento ascético.
