Sridhar Rangayan (also spelt Sridhar Rangaihn or Sridhar Rangayyan; born 2 April 1962) is an Indian filmmaker who has made films with special focus on queer subjects. His queer films, The Pink Mirror and Yours Emotionally, have been considered groundbreaking because of their realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the largely closeted Indian gay community. His film The Pink Mirror remains banned in India by the Indian Censor Board because of its homosexual content.
Rangayan was born in Mandya, Karnataka. As a gay activist, he has been one of the front-rank leaders in the LGBT movement in India and has contributed immensely towards the growth of awareness about sexual minorities in India.
He is a Founder Member and Trustee of The Humsafar Trust, the first gay NGO in India, along with Ashok Row Kavi. He served on its board till January 2013. He also designed and edited India's first gay magazine Bombay Dost between 1999–2003.
In 2006, he was awarded the South Asian Achievers Award for his contribution to global mainstream media by Triangle Media Group (TMG), UK.
Filmmaker, writer, activist and film director- Sridhar Rangayan has championed LGBT issues in his films and is part of the queer cinema movement in India. A member of the jury at several prestigious film festivals, he is also the founder director of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. In a powerful and thought-provoking talk, Mr. Rangayan shared with the rapt audience the social taboos and problems faced by people with different sexual orientation. He talked about laws and societal norms that impose perceptions and challenge the freedom of individuals. On Saturday, January 23, 2016, we hosted a celebration of queer cinema by partnering with the biggest queer film festival in South East Asia - KASHISH. Between screening the best films from around the world and India, we also hosted this power-packed panel discussion titled ‘Pride and Prejudice – Building Alliances for a Better Tomorrow’. The panel comprised veteran filmmaker Hansal Mehta, noted actor-director Nandita Das, screenwriter Gazal Dhaliwal and Festival Director of KASHISH, Sridhar Rangayan. The panel was moderated by head of our lab, Parmesh Shahani. Through this insightful conversation, the panelists explored the importance of straight allies in the movement for equal rights for people who identify as LGBT.
