Filmmaker, writer, activist and film director- Sridhar Rangayan has championed LGBT issues in his films and is part of the queer cinema movement in India. A member of the jury at several prestigious film festivals, he is also the founder director of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. In a powerful and thought-provoking talk, Mr. Rangayan shared with the rapt audience the social taboos and problems faced by people with different sexual orientation. He talked about laws and societal norms that impose perceptions and challenge the freedom of individuals.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Sridhar is an Indian filmmaker whose films present hard-hitting social issues with warmth, compassion and humour. These award winning films are at the forefront of India’s emergent queer cinema movement and have been screened at over 100 national and international film festivals; won several awards and received critical acclaim. He has served as a Jury member at Berlin International Film Festival, Germany, and Movies That Matter, Netherlands. He is the Founder and Festival Director of Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival (2010 - 2013) and Flashpoint Human Rights Film Festival (2010/11 and 2011/12).
About PSBT
The Public Service Broadcasting Trust, India, commissions, produces and mentors 60+ independent documentary films a year. Our library of 600 docus have been screened at more than 750 film festivals worldwide, winning close to 200 awards. 50 percent of docs are made by women and two thirds starting out filmmakers.
We are a not-for-profit based in New Delhi that works to create and sustain a credible space for public service broadcasting in India, nurturing a media that is independent, participatory, pluralistic and democratic.

PSBT hosts the annual Open Frame Film Festival to celebrate its commitment to freedom of expression, screening works from around the world that embody the highest standards of Indie filmmaking.
PSBT is managed by a core team led by the Managing Trustee, Rajiv Mehrotra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajiv_Mehrotra ) supported by Executive Producers Tulika Srivastava & Ridhima Mehra and a small team of three others. Sridhar Rangayan
Sridhar Rangayan (also spelt Sridhar Rangaihn or Sridhar Rangayyan; born 2 April 1962) is an Indian filmmaker who has made films with special focus on queer subjects. His queer films, The Pink Mirror and Yours Emotionally, have been considered groundbreaking because of their realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the largely closeted Indian gay community. His film The Pink Mirror remains banned in India by the Indian Censor Board because of its homosexual content.
Rangayan was born in Mandya, Karnataka. As a gay activist, he has been one of the front-rank leaders in the LGBT movement in India and has contributed immensely towards the growth of awareness about sexual minorities in India.
He is a Founder Member and Trustee of The Humsafar Trust, the first gay NGO in India, along with Ashok Row Kavi. He served on its board till January 2013. He also designed and edited India's first gay magazine Bombay Dost between 1999–2003.
In 2006, he was awarded the South Asian Achievers Award for his contribution to global mainstream media by Triangle Media Group (TMG), UK.

Spotlight on queer cinema with Hansal Mehta, Nandita Das, Gazal Dhaliwal and Sridhar Rangayan
On Saturday, January 23, 2016, we hosted a celebration of queer cinema by partnering with the biggest queer film festival in South East Asia - KASHISH. Between screening the best films from around the world and India, we also hosted this power-packed panel discussion titled ‘Pride and Prejudice – Building Alliances for a Better Tomorrow’. The panel comprised veteran filmmaker Hansal Mehta, noted actor-director Nandita Das, screenwriter Gazal Dhaliwal and Festival Director of KASHISH, Sridhar Rangayan. The panel was moderated by head of our lab, Parmesh Shahani. Through this insightful conversation, the panelists explored the importance of straight allies in the movement for equal rights for people who identify as LGBT.

Between screening the best films from around the world and India, we also hosted this power-packed panel discussion titled ‘Pride and Prejudice – Building Alliances for a Better Tomorrow’.

Don is actually a smuggler and when Ganesh’s innocent school master father gets unwittingly trapped in his web the six friends have to pull up their detective hats and work together to unearth the mystery. But are the children capable of dealing with the cunning of an experienced, tricky smuggler and would they be able to save Ganesh’s father in this exciting children’s thriller?
Director’s Biography : Sridhar Rangayan
Activist, writer and filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan studied in IIT, Bombay. He worked in different sectors before doing a film appreciation course at FTII . He then interned with Sai Paranjpye on the film ‘Papeeha’ and TV series ‘Hum Panchi Ek Chal Ke’ and with Dev Benegal on his film ‘English August’. He has been associated in the writing and direction of many TV series including Kalpana Lajmi’s ‘The Awakening’ for Doordarshan, ‘Rishtey’ and ‘Gubbare’ for Zee TV and ‘Kagaar’ for Sahara. ‘Yeh Hai Chakkad Bakkad Bumbe Bo’ was his first feature film. His other films include ‘Yours Emotionally’ and ’68 Pages’.

As India's most visible and controversial Hijra (transgender), she has balanced working for the community at the grassroots as an activist with using her glamorous celebrity image to push the envelope right up to an UN task force meeting. Never scared to speak her mind, she also is perhaps one of the few Hijras to stay with her biological family and be accepted by them.

Girish Kumar was a simple boy-next door in a town in Southern India. Through school, college and his diploma course in computer science, he wore his shirt and pant daily, but on Sunday, he would secretly wear girl's clothes at his friend's house. Never could he have imagined that one day he would board a train to Mumbai which would change his life forever. Joining a Hijra (eunuch) household, dancing at weddings, begging on streets; working at The Humsafar Trust as an outreach worker, rising up to head half-a-dozen projects as Administrator and finally transforming into the beautiful Nisha, was never part of his life plans. Nisha now dreams of equal rights for her transgender community and a happy life with her half-a-dozen transgender daughters.

Never one to be afraid of experimenting with mediums -painting, sculpture, mixed media and new media - Jani has also experimented with life and love. He has never been anxious of his sexuality and sexual desires and has been open about expressing them through his works that are exhibited in many prestigious galleries across the world and are part of exclusive private collections. While he even got married unofficially to his same-sex partner much before anyone in India ever did, he says his inspiration for his work is his own life, which has recently taken an interesting turn towards meditation and spiritualism.

From being a young shy boy in a conservative middle-class family to heading an organization of transgenders, Gauri has indeed come a long way, far ahead of even what she ever imagined. Her leadership qualities were spotted by Ashok Row Kavi when she was working with The Humsafar Trust. She was encouraged to set up her own community based organization Sakhi Char Chowgi, under which she now manages several projects that address both health issues of transgenders and provide livelihood opportunities. She is an aggressive fighter who knows how to handle both the police and the politicians. Though she is estranged from her own biological family, she has formed a happy family with a partner and a daughter.

LACHI
Ever since childhood, Lachi dreamt of being a woman, and today she is every inch the quintessential woman! Brought up in a not well-to-do family with conservative parents, the young boy that was Lachi did not know for many years what is the meaning of the way he felt about himself and what to do with it. His association with Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and Dai Welfare Society and the transformation into the gritty glamorous Lachi is a journey of self discovery and self transformation. Lachi today is a committed activist fighting for the rights of transgender persons. She also has dreams of being a Bollywood star - a Bollywood transgender star, naturally.

For Geeta Kumana, it has been an eventful ride - from being a windsurfer to being an activist to being a businesswoman - but she has glided through them all rather smoothly. Her first brush with the lesbian community was at Stree Sangam, but Geeta soon founded her own organization Aanchal Trust, which was perhaps the first lesbian organization in Mumbai to have an office, hire professional staff, run a counsel & distress helpline and even have a lesbian radio spot on air! Geeta soon became the one and only out visible lesbian in Mumbai, her photographs splashed across newspapers and live on every news channel. But then, Geeta is one who knows no fear and is known to always speaks out her mind.
