Lloyd Cole And The Commotions’ debut album in 1984, Rattlesnakes, might have been a US college favourite at that time but it certainly was one of the brightest albums of the year and the group was rightly lauded by the NME (NME has included it in its Top 100 Albums of All-Time list). To paraphrase a review we ran back in 1985: From the man who wasn’t ready to be heartbroken, Lloyd Cole’s album is a trip down Magazine avenue with its minor characters, broken hearts and desperate dreamers. Propelled by that deliciously melodic guitar, Cole’s character studies are still some of the most compulsive in rock ‘n’ roll. Tracks such as Perfect Skin, Rattlesnake and especially Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken? have withstood the test of time and continue to be as catchy and biting today as they were then.
