Jaisalmer: Temperature at Indo-Pak border is again touching 53-54 degrees Celsius, making it extremely tough for BSF jawans and camels guarding the border. In a bid to provide some respite, jawans are all set to be given PCM cool jackets that would help jawans brave the heat. The trial of the jackets is on.
Earlier too, trial of DRDO PCM jackets had taken place, but it did not prove successful.
BSF jawans have to be on operational duty in tough conditions and temperature ranging from 53-54 degrees Celsius at the international border adjoining Pakistan. Prolonged exposure to scorching heat affects their performance adversely. To tackle this, private company scientists, after various tests, came up with a cool vest, which they claim will keep the body of jawans cool up to four hours.
The trial of these cool jackets has been going on for the last two-three days, and is expected to go on for a day or two more.
According to BSF senior official sources, the trial is going on at Shahgarh Bulge desert area in Jaisalmer. The jawans are asked to wear this jacket and it is being monitored as to how much time this jacket can keep one cool. BSF doctors and other officers are on the job of assessing how successful this trial turns out to be. They will then prepare a report and send it to headquarters.
Private Cool Jacket Company official source said that PCM device is an answer to the high environmental heat. These devices are used in the form of jackets which can be worn over or under normal uniform. PCM within the cool jacket is a thermal reservoir of 'cool calories' and these cool calories help neutralize the excess gain of heat and maintain the required body temperature.
He said the PCMs are thermally rechargeable and can be recharged a number of times, spanning many years.
