A short film on the life and artistic style of Spanish artist Francisco Goya.
This piece was made as a presentation for my art appreciation class. From concept, to research, script writing, recording, gathering assets, audio and video editing, and dvd authoring, this piece was created in a period of less than 24 hours.
Throughout their artistic career, Jake and Dinos Chapman have returned again and again to a single artwork by the great Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. The Disasters of War are a set of 83 etchings that offer a harrowing account of the atrocities of the Peninsular War (1807-14), but for Jake Chapman they are much more than a matter of historical record. They have provided the inspiration for countless Chapman Brothers artworks across more than two decades, from model recreations and 'rectified' prints to shop mannequins and full-scale sculptures in bronze, some of which were nominated for the Turner Prize.
In this film, Jake explores why Goya's famous etching series is so central to his art. He re-examines his relationship to the Spanish artist by visiting Goya's hometown Zaragoza for the first time, and by spending time at the Prado in Madrid where some of Goya's greatest works hang on the walls.
As Jake works on a new 'Disasters of War' model in his London studio, he explains why for him there is a fundamental conflict at the heart of Goya's art - in their gruesome detail his images seem to celebrate violence rather than protest against it. Jake explores this contradiction that art history has chosen to ignore, and explains how it tells us something profound about the way we see ourselves and our past.

Quizá la figura de Goya sea tan atrayente por lo que supone de ruptura, tanto con la pintura como con la sociedad que le rodea, convirtiéndose en el eterno insatisfecho, casi en un maldito al final de su vida.
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes nace en un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Zaragoza llamado Fuendetodos, el 30 de marzo de 1746. Sus padres formaban parte de la clase media baja de la época. La familia tenía casa y tierras en Fuendetodos, pero pronto se trasladaron a Zaragoza. En la capital aragonesa recibió Goya sus primeras enseñanzas; con doce años aparece documentado en el taller de José Luzán, quien le introdujo en el estilo decadente de finales del Barroco, estilo en el que realizará sus primeros trabajos.
Zaragoza era pequeña y Goya deseaba aprender en la Corte; este deseo motiva el traslado en 1763 a Madrid. En la capital de España se instalará en el taller de Francisco Bayeu, cuyas relaciones con el dictador artístico del momento y promotor del Neoclasicismo, Antón Rafael Mengs, eran excelentes. Bayeu mostrará a Goya las luces, los brillos y el abocetado de la pintura.
Deseoso de continuar su aprendizaje artístico, decidió ir a Italia por su cuenta. En 1771 está en Parma, presentándose a un concurso en el que obtendrá el segundo premio con el cuadro Aníbal contemplando los Alpes. La estancia italiana va a ser corta pero muy productiva.
A mediados de 1771 está trabajando en Zaragoza, donde recibirá sus primeros encargos dentro de una temática religiosa y un estilo totalmente académico. El 25 de julio de 1773 Goya contrae matrimonio en Madrid con María Josefa Bayeu, hermana de Francisco y Ramón Bayeu, por lo que los lazos se estrechan con su "maestro".
Los primeros encargos que recibe en la Corte son gracias a esta relación. Su destino sería la Real Fábrica de Tapices de Santa Bárbara, para la que Goya deberá realizar cartones, es decir, bocetos que después se transformarán en tapices. La relación con la Real Fábrica durará 18 años y en ellos realizará sus cartones más preciados, en los que nos presenta un sensacional retrato de la sociedad española de la Ilustración, con sus majos, majas, manolos y nobles, interesándose el maestro por los efectos de la luz y el color, aunque todavía los rostros de sus personajes no presentan una fisonomía particular.
Por supuesto, durante este tiempo va a efectuar otros encargos importantes; en 1780 ingresa en la Academia de San Fernando, para la que hará un Cristo crucificado, actualmente en el Museo del Prado. Y ese mismo año decora una cúpula de la Basílica del Pilar de Zaragoza, aunque el estilo colorista y brioso del maestro no gustará al Cabildo catedralicio y provocará el enfrentamiento con su cuñado Francisco Bayeu.... --

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish pronunciation: [fɾanˈθisko xoˈse ðe ˈɣoʝa i luˈθjentes]; 30 March 1746–16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker regarded both as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown, and through his works was both a commentator on and chronicler of his era. The subversive and imaginative element in his art, as well as his bold handling of paint, provided a model for the work of later generations of artists, notably Manet, Picasso and Francis Bacon.. In his honour, Spain's main national film awards are called the Goya Awards.
Goya was born in Fuendetodos, Aragón, Spain, in 1746 to José Benito de Goya y Franque and Gracia de Lucientes y Salvador. He spent his childhood in Fuendetodos, where his family lived in a house bearing the family crest of his mother. His father earned his living as a gilder. About 1749, the family bought a house in the city of Zaragoza and some years later moved into it. Goya may have attended school at Escuelas Pias. He formed a close friendship with Martin Zapater at this time, and their correspondence from the 1770s to the 1790s is a valuable source for understanding Goya's early career at the court of Madrid. At age 14, Goya studied under the painter José Luzán. He moved to Madrid where he studied with Anton Raphael Mengs, a painter who was popular with Spanish royalty. He clashed with his master, and his examinations were unsatisfactory. Goya submitted entries for the Royal Academy of Fine Art in 1763 and 1766, but was denied entrance.

Francis Goya (born Francis Weyer on 16 May 1946) is a Belgian guitarist born in Liege.
Weyer first played with Patrick Ruymen in the group Les Caraïbes, a Belgian cover group. The two then formed the rock group Liberty Six in 1965, which had a proto-psychedelic stage show and released only one single before disbanding. Weyer then moved on to the J.J. Band and Plus.
In the 1970s, Weyer started using the name Francis Goya and released solo albums of romantic Spanish guitar and mandolin music. His 1975 single "Nostalgia", a tune written by his father and arranged for guitar by Goya, became an international hit, reaching #1 in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Norway, and Brazil. Later albums saw Goya moving more into a Latin American-influenced style, including three albums recorded with Bolivian singer Carmina Cabrera.
Goya has some 40 album releases to his credit.

Quizá la figura de Goya sea tan atrayente por lo que supone de ruptura, tanto con la pintura como con la sociedad que le rodea, convirtiéndose en el eterno insatisfecho, casi en un maldito al final de su vida.
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes nace en un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Zaragoza llamado Fuendetodos, el 30 de marzo de 1746. Sus padres formaban parte de la clase media baja de la época. La familia tenía casa y tierras en Fuendetodos, pero pronto se trasladaron a Zaragoza. En la capital aragonesa recibió Goya sus primeras enseñanzas; con doce años aparece documentado en el taller de José Luzán, quien le introdujo en el estilo decadente de finales del Barroco, estilo en el que realizará sus primeros trabajos.
Zaragoza era pequeña y Goya deseaba aprender en la Corte; este deseo motiva el traslado en 1763 a Madrid. En la capital de España se instalará en el taller de Francisco Bayeu, cuyas relaciones con el dictador artístico del momento y promotor del Neoclasicismo, Antón Rafael Mengs, eran excelentes. Bayeu mostrará a Goya las luces, los brillos y el abocetado de la pintura.
Deseoso de continuar su aprendizaje artístico, decidió ir a Italia por su cuenta. En 1771 está en Parma, presentándose a un concurso en el que obtendrá el segundo premio con el cuadro Aníbal contemplando los Alpes. La estancia italiana va a ser corta pero muy productiva.
A mediados de 1771 está trabajando en Zaragoza, donde recibirá sus primeros encargos dentro de una temática religiosa y un estilo totalmente académico. El 25 de julio de 1773 Goya contrae matrimonio en Madrid con María Josefa Bayeu, hermana de Francisco y Ramón Bayeu, por lo que los lazos se estrechan con su "maestro".
Los primeros encargos que recibe en la Corte son gracias a esta relación. Su destino sería la Real Fábrica de Tapices de Santa Bárbara, para la que Goya deberá realizar cartones, es decir, bocetos que después se transformarán en tapices. La relación con la Real Fábrica durará 18 años y en ellos realizará sus cartones más preciados, en los que nos presenta un sensacional retrato de la sociedad española de la Ilustración, con sus majos, majas, manolos y nobles, interesándose el maestro por los efectos de la luz y el color, aunque todavía los rostros de sus personajes no presentan una fisonomía particular.
Por supuesto, durante este tiempo va a efectuar otros encargos importantes; en 1780 ingresa en la Academia de San Fernando, para la que hará un Cristo crucificado, actualmente en el Museo del Prado. Y ese mismo año decora una cúpula de la Basílica del Pilar de Zaragoza, aunque el estilo colorista y brioso del maestro no gustará al Cabildo catedralicio y provocará el enfrentamiento con su cuñado Francisco Bayeu.... --
