Ted Olson argues the case for civility
Attorney Ted Olson, a star in conservative legal circles, has argued 65 cases before the U.S Supreme Court, on issues ranging from the disputed 2000 election and money in politics, to same-sex marriage and the children of illegal immigrants. But his stance has not always reflected traditional conservative doctrine. Olson talked with correspondent Mo Rocca about overcoming polarization, and about his marriage, which demonstrates that opposites attract.

Ted Olson '65 is one of Berkeley Law's most distinguished alumni and one of the nation's premier appellate advocates. He has argued 60 cases in the Supreme Court, prevailing in over 75 percent of those arguments.
Mr. Olson is a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Washington, D.C. office. Previously, as Solicitor General, Mr. Olson was the Government's principal advocate at the U.S. Supreme Court. As Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel, Mr. Olson was the Executive Branch's principal legal adviser.
He has twice been awarded the Edmund J. Randolph Award, the U.S. Department of Justice's highest award for public service and leadership. He also received the Department of Defense's highest civilian award for his advocacy in the courts of the United States, including the Supreme Court.
In 2011, Washingtonian magazine named him first on its list of the finest lawyers in the nation's capital. The late New York Times columnist William Safire described Mr. Olson as this generation's "most persuasive advocate" before the Supreme Court and "the most effective Solicitor General" in decades.
Mr. Olson received his law degree in 1965 from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall), where he was a member of the California Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific.

In conversation with California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom
Introduction by Actor/Activist George Takei
Come hear the riveting inside story of the Supreme Court’s landmark rulings on The Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8. On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a pair of landmark decisions, reinstating the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in California. Boies and Olson – who argued against each other all the way to the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore – joined forces to forge the unique legal argument that would carry the day. Now they discuss the story of the five-year struggle to win the right for gay couples to marry, from Proposition 8’s adoption in 2008 to its defeat before the highest court in the land in Hollingsworth v. Perry in 2013. Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, plaintiffs represented by Mr. Boies and Mr. Olson in the Supreme Court case, will be in attendance.
