Thumri (Devnagari: ठुमरी, Nastaliq: ٹھمری) is a common genre of semi-classical Indian music.
The text is romantic or devotional in nature, and usually revolves around a girl's love for Krishna. The lyrics are usually in Uttar Pradesh dialects of Hindi called Poorbi and Brij Bhasha. Thumri is characterized by its sensuality, and by a greater flexibility with the raga.
Thumri is also used as a generic name for some other, even lighter, forms such as Dadra, Hori, Kajari, Saavan, Jhoola, and Chaiti, even though each of them has its own structure and content — either lyrical or musical or both — and so the exposition of these forms vary. Like Indian classical music itself, some of these forms have their origin in folk literature and music.
Some of the most commonly used ragas are Pilu, Kafi, Khamaj, Gara, Tilak Kamod and Bhairavi. The compositions are usually set to kaherava taal of 8 beats, addha tal of 16 beats, dipchandi of 14 beats or jat of 16 beats and in "dadra' tal of 6 beats.
Thumri arose in popularity during the 19th century in the Lucknow court of nawab Wajid Ali Shah. At that time it used to be a song sung by courtesans accompanied by dance. That was the bandish ki thumri or bol bant ki thumri. When this style of thumri went out of vogue, a new style became more popular, which is known as bol banao, sung in Varanasi.
Mehdi Hassan Khan (Urdu: مہدی حسن خان ) is a Pakistani ghazal singer and a former playback singer for Lollywood. He is famously known as the 'King of ghazal' (Urdu: شہنشاہِ غزل). He has ruled the Pakistan film industry along with Ahmed Rushdi. He was honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Pride of Performance and Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan, and Gorkha Dakshina Bahu by the Government of Nepal.
Mehdi Hassan was born on 18 July 1934 in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India into a family of traditional musicians. He claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant clan of musicians. Mehdi Hassan had his musical grooming from his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were both traditional Dhrupad singers. Hassan started to perform at a young age and the first concert of dhrupad and kheyal with his elder brother is reported to have been held in Fazilka Bungla, near present DC House (1935) of Undivided Punjab. After the Partition of India, 20-year-old Hassan and his family migrated to Pakistan and suffered severe financial hardships.
Plot
Shekawat is unhappy that his parents have willed their estate, and wealth to his sister, Sonali, and her husband, Pramod. He devises a plot which will enable him to get the wealth. His sister gives birth to a son, and Pramod overhears him instructing his men to kill the child, and runs away with him. His men run Pramod down, and believe they killed him, but Pramod survives and hands the child, Amit, over to Sudha and her husband, who already have a daughter named Ayusha. Pramod then goes into a coma. Shekhawat gets his sister to sign over the estate in his name, and marries a wealthy but devout woman named Shobha, who subsequently gives birth to a son named Babla. Years later, the children have now grown up. Ayusha and Babla are attracted to each other, and their respective families approve of their marriage. The only one who is opposed to this marriage is Pramod, who has now recovered, only to find out that he must first go through Amit, his very own son, who is not prepared to believe any story against Shekhawat.
Oh oh how dare you
Oh oh how dare you
This is how I dare to
This is how I dare to
I'm coming over to remind you of me
No you can't lay there
That's where we used to sleep
I swear it happens better when it happens again
I told you from the start I could only see the end
Sugar if you're sure you're goin, we'll move a little slower then
If you want I could be decent. You gotta let me know when
ooh ooh ooh...
You can have this much is left from before.
I am sick with my effort I am sick without yours.
To be fair, to be fair I never said I'd try
But I'll be fair, I'll be fair, in how I spend your time
Well I can't help it, oh, I should spare you
But I can't help it, oh, I would not dare to
ooh ooh ooh... oh oh oh
Well I can't help it, oh, I should spare you
But I can't help it, oh I would not dare to
If you start to think that it's all over now
That the work you have done has been lost somehow
You wake up hungry in this world you've made
So much so how could you be turned away
Under thunder we drove through a black sky,
Paved with the threat we might die, oh we were so afraid
You can throw your body up against the glass but you can't stop the rain
From pouring in once the cracks have been made
But there's still time to sing
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Who could stay sleepin' when that garbage man came?
He stormed up the street 'cause we called out his name
With the sounds of us choking on the mess that's been made
Dig us out from this slumber
We've given salt, we've sweated off, done all this and more
So heed when you hear us knockin' on your door
We don't want to be the currency gets spent on war
And then come home wondering what was it all for
That's no way to sing
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
We been hard hard working
We've got a plan
Send home dollar bills
And fistfuls of honey
When love is love, don't let it go away
My love is love, it won't go away
Don't ever let anybody go
Why's it so hard to hold, how come I never know?
I'm the traveling gentleman, I knew I would come back again
I swear my days were not lost on me
When love is love, don't let it go away
My love is love, it won't go away
So sorry that I couldn't put the past away
I was hoping, hoping I could hold you all the same
That I was broke and I was like a paper-weight
Holding nothing down from getting blown away
When we know we're not gonna take it all the way
We'll just have to learn to give it in a different kind of way
I know about the human heart, I have been watching yours
Forgive me for the mess I left, but?
Too sweet for my mouth, too soft for my hands
So sorry that I couldn't put the past away
I was hoping, hoping but I had you all the same
Kinda when you called to hear me calling out your name
Won't you help me keep it open, hell you want to stay
When love is love, don't let it go away
My love is love, it won't go away
Don't ever let anybody go
