History
Sakarya dates back to 378 BC. Ancient settlers included Phrygians, Bithynians, Cimmerians, Lydians and Persians, but Sakarya got its identity from the Romans and Byzantine rulers. One of the most important remains of historical significance is the Justinianus Bridge (Turkish: Beş Köprü) built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 533 CE.
Sakarya Province (Turkish: Sakarya ili) is a province in Turkey, located on the coast of Black Sea. The Sakarya River creates a webbing of estuaries in the province.
Sakarya is located in the Marmara Region. Its adjacent provinces are Kocaeli to the west, Bilecik to the south, Bolu to the southeast, and Düzce to the east. The capital of Sakarya is Adapazarı. The climate is oceanic due to its close proximity to the Black Sea.
Sakarya is situated on the Ankara-Istanbul Highway. It is connected through both road and rail. Sakarya is serviced by Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen International Airport airport.The current mayor of Sakarya is Zeki Tocoglu

17 Halk Eğitimi Merkezinin ortaklaşa düzenlediği Halk Eğitimi Merkezleri Festivalinin açılışını Vali Mustafa Büyük, Eşi Emine Hayriye Büyük Hanımefendi ve törene katılan diğer protokol üyeleri gerçekleştirdi. Açılışın ardından Vali Büyük ve beraberindekiler statları gezerek kursiyerlerden bilgi aldılar.
2013 yılı Halk Eğitim Merkezleri Festivali'in (HEMFEST) açılışı Kent Meydanında düzenlenen törenle yapıldı. Bu yıl Sakarya'da ilki gerçekleştirilen festivale 17 Halk Eğitim Merkezi stant kurarak ürün ve etkinliklerini Sakaryalılarla paylaştı.
Halk Eğitim Merkezi'nde kursiyerler tarafından ortaya çıkarılan ürünler sergilendi.
Sakarya İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü tarafından düzenlenen festivalde onlarca eser ve etkinlik Sakaryalıların beğenisine sunuldu.

The opening of the Great Governor Mustafa, his wife Emine Auspicious Great Lady, Deputy Mayor of London Fevzi Sword of Justice Judiciary Committee Chairman Ahmet Akyuz, Deputy Governor Farouk Singles, District Governors, Mayors, City Police Chief Mustafa Aktas, his wife Hatice Aktas, City National training Manager Yavuz Selim Sandıkçı, District public Education Managers, Apartment Managers, teachers, trainees, and many citizens participated.
Festival jointly organized by the Centre for Adult Education Adult Education Centers 17 opening of the Great Governor Mustafa, his wife Emine Auspicious older lady and the other participants in the ceremony held members of the protocol. After the opening ceremony, the Governor and his older trainees received information by visiting stadiums.
Festival of 2013, the Public Education Centers (Hemfest) was inaugurated at a ceremony held at City Square. This year the festival is the first of Sakarya, products and activities by establishing 17 Community Education Center Sakaryalılarla shared stand.
Public Education Center products exhibited uncovered by the trainees.
The festival is organized by the Directorate of Education dozens of Sakarya Province Sakarya works and activities were offered.

Even though 4,000 people in Sakarya province lost their lives when the Marmara region was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Aug. 17, 1999 that left at least 18,000 people dead in total and many others injured, there are still thousands of people in Sakarya living in more than 900 flats that were moderately damaged from the earthquake and need urgent repairs.
Experts warn Turkey may suffer another tragedy and many have expressed their concerns about the readiness of the country's most populous city, İstanbul, and its surrounding cities such as Sakarya and Kocaeli in the event of a big quake.
Sakarya Chamber of Civil Engineers President Hüsnü Gürpınar told Today's Zaman the high-rise buildings that were moderately damaged during the 1999 earthquake and have not been repaired pose a great danger to those living in them in the event of an earthquake. Gürpınar said the Sakarya Municipality and governor's office decided to demolish those buildings three years ago after the deadline to repair them passed. According to Gürpınar, there are currently 500 moderate-risk buildings in Sakarya, including high-rises, that are home to 900 households and thousands of people.
The Sakarya Municipality built 466 residences for earthquake victims after the 1999 earthquake, whose epicenter was 18 kilometers away from the city center. However, most of the victims with priority to purchase the buildings were not interested because the houses were far from the city.
According to Gürpınar, apart from those buildings with moderate damage, the other buildings in Sakarya do not meet earthquake safety standards. Gürpınar believes that more than 25,000 buildings in Sakarya must be checked. “More than 60 percent of the buildings in Sakarya are over 20 years old and most of them were constructed without any civil engineering supervision and do not have registered licenses,” he said.
Underlining that urban transformation projects in the city were initiated incorrectly, Gürpınar said there are currently three such projects in the city, none of which places a priority on earthquakes. According to Law No. 6306 regulating urban transformation projects, earthquake proofing must be a priority in these kinds of projects.
The Aug.17, 1999 earthquake served as an eye-opener for Turkey, with many state authorities pledging to take the necessary measures for quake preparedness to avoid similar tragedies in the future and to minimize damage and losses in the event of a powerful tremor; however, the measures that have been taken since then show the country is not better prepared for a major earthquake than before 1999.
Geologists have been warning for years that they are expecting a powerful earthquake between magnitudes 7.2 and 7.8 on the Richter scale to hit İstanbul and the region.

The prototype of the country's first domestically manufactured tank, the Altay, was tested in Sakarya province on Friday.
Under the Altay tank project, launched by the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Turkey's first national tank will be built by Koç Holding's Otokar in cooperation with Hyundai Rotem and Germany's MTU.
The design phase of the tank is now complete, and the first prototype was tested out in Sakarya's Arifiye district where Otokar established Turkey's first test center for tanks. SSM officials were there to observe the first test drive.Defense authorities had allocated $500 million to fund the production of the prototype. The tank's modular shield was designed by Turkey's Roketsan, while MTU will provide the diesel engines. Hyundai Rotem will contribute technological support, while the tank's main artillery system will be produced by the state-owned Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK).
ASELSAN, a defense industry giant that produces technology for the Turkish military, will design the tank's munitions control system. Otokar expects to start mass producing Turkey's first domestically manufactured tanks at either the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017. The tank will have a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun and will be protected against biological, chemical and radioactive attacks. The planned maximum speed is set at 70 kilometers per hour, thanks to a 1,800 horsepower engine.
Otokar has been in the defense industry for 21 years. To date, it has produced 25,000 military vehicles and has exported to 15 countries. Environment and Urban Planning Minister İdris Güllüce's daughter and other relatives have purchased large amounts of land in an area that was shortly thereafter declared part of the industrial zone of the Karasu district of Sakarya province, a daily reported on Wednesday.
The Meydan daily said that Güllüce's daughter, Zeynep Zehra Hulkiender, and another close relative, Yusuf Güllüce, purchased decares of valuable land in the district's İhsaniye neighborhood at prices far below current market value in February, just a month before the land was added to the Sakarya industrial zone by a Cabinet decision. The value of the land skyrocketed just a month after Güllüce's family members made the purchases.
The report called into the question why it was that though an area that had been expropriated based on a zoning decision made months before, in April 2014, to establish the industrial zone in Karasu, the authorities changed the declared plan and redefined the intended industrial zone to include the plots purchased by Güllüce's relatives.
It was reported that Hulkiender purchased roughly 700 square meters of land in February, and that Yusuf Güllüce also bought 20,730 square meters of land in the same area. The report further claimed that other relatives of Güllüce also purchased valuable plots of land in the İhsaniye neighborhood before the industrial zone was redefined. While the estimated price of the land was around TL 30,000-40,000 per decare last year, it is now worth nearly TL 55,000-60,000, constituting as much as a 100 percent rise in the value of the land because of the zoning change and a profit for Güllüce's relatives. Their purchases of the land have been questioned by the opposition.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Karasu Branch head Bülent Ülkü reacted harshly to Güllüce's relatives' purchases of such valuable land, saying, "Güllüce's relatives bought decares of land in İhsaniye. If anybody wonders about the authenticity of it, [they] can review the deeds registry and see the truth."

With just one day remaining until the June 7 parliamentary election, reports of voter registration forms sent to non-existent people registered at imaginary addresses and claims that ballot papers and ballot box seals have been stolen in Sakarya province have deepened concerns over possible election fraud.
Sakarya Bar Association President Zafer Kazan claimed on Twitter on Thursday that two sacks of ballot papers and ballot box seals to be used in Sunday's election had been stolen in Sakarya. Kazan further claimed those ballot papers have been sent to fraudulent identities. In one of his tweets, Kazan said that the items in question were stolen from a sports hall that will be used as a polling station in the Serdivan district of Sakarya. The Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has since launched an investigation.
In a report published in the Bugün daily on Thursday, a group set up by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in İstanbul's Kadıköy district has found that voter registration forms had been sent to a total of 2,860 people who are not residents of Kadıköy. CHP Kadıköy district Chairman Ali Narin said: “For instance, just two people reside in an apartment in the fourth floor of one block. However, more than two people have been registered as voters living at this two-person apartment. This family called us and told us that two non-existent people had been registered as living at their apartment. This has proved that there are many nonexistent voters in Kadıköy.”
Similarly, Nalan Dilaverler, who lives in an apartment block in the Bakırköy district of İstanbul, found out that 12 voter registration forms had been sent to the block by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) despite the fact that there are only eight apartments in the building. She noted that four of the registration papers correspond to fake addresses.
“In our block, the apartments are numbered from four to 11. However, four voter registration papers were sent to apartments numbered one, two, three and 12,” Dilaverler said.
Noting that there were no ID numbers written on these voter registration forms, she said that she had informed several public institutions including the muhtar (neighborhood head), the Bakırköy Registry Office and the provincial election board about the situation.
Saying that the registry office is currently reviewing the issue, Dilaverler maintained that she will keep an eye on proceedings during election day and watch out for any fraudulent activity.

Even though 4,000 people in Sakarya province lost their lives when the Marmara region was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Aug. 17, 1999 that left at least 18,000 people dead in total and many others injured, there are still thousands of people in Sakarya living in more than 900 flats that were moderately damaged from the earthquake and need urgent repairs. Experts warn Turkey may suffer another tragedy and many have expressed their concerns about the readiness of the country's most populous city, İstanbul, and its surrounding cities such as Sakarya and Kocaeli in the event of a big quake. Sakarya Chamber of Civil Engineers President Hüsnü Gürpınar told Today's Zaman the high-rise buildings that were moderately damaged during the 1999 earthquake and have not been repaired pose a great danger to those living in them in the event of an earthquake. Gürpınar said the Sakarya Municipality and governor's office decided to demolish those buildings three years ago after the deadline to repair them passed. According to Gürpınar, there are currently 500 moderate-risk buildings in Sakarya, including high-rises, that are home to 900 households and thousands of people. The Sakarya Municipality built 466 residences for earthquake victims after the 1999 earthquake, whose epicenter was 18 kilometers away from the city center. However, most of the victims with priority to purchase the buildings were not interested because the houses were far from the city. According to Gürpınar, apart from those buildings with moderate damage, the other buildings in Sakarya do not meet earthquake safety standards. Gürpınar believes that more than 25,000 buildings in Sakarya must be checked. “More than 60 percent of the buildings in Sakarya are over 20 years old and most of them were constructed without any civil engineering supervision and do not have registered licenses,” he said. Underlining that urban transformation projects in the city were initiated incorrectly, Gürpınar said there are currently three such projects in the city, none of which places a priority on earthquakes. According to Law No. 6306 regulating urban transformation projects, earthquake proofing must be a priority in these kinds of projects. The Aug.17, 1999 earthquake served as an eye-opener for Turkey, with many state authorities pledging to take the necessary measures for quake preparedness to avoid similar tragedies in the future and to minimize damage and losses in the event of a powerful tremor; however, the measures that have been taken since then show the country is not better prepared for a major earthquake than before 1999. Geologists have been warning for years that they are expecting a powerful earthquake between magnitudes 7.2 and 7.8 on the Richter scale to hit İstanbul and the region. -

The prototype of the country's first domestically manufactured tank, the Altay, was tested in Sakarya province on Friday. Under the Altay tank project, launched by the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Turkey's first national tank will be built by Koç Holding's Otokar in cooperation with Hyundai Rotem and Germany's MTU. The design phase of the tank is now complete, and the first prototype was tested out in Sakarya's Arifiye district where Otokar established Turkey's first test center for tanks. SSM officials were there to observe the first test drive.Defense authorities had allocated $500 million to fund the production of the prototype. The tank's modular shield was designed by Turkey's Roketsan, while MTU will provide the diesel engines. Hyundai Rotem will contribute technological support, while the tank's main artillery system will be produced by the state-owned Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK). ASELSAN, a defense industry giant that produces technology for the Turkish military, will design the tank's munitions control system. Otokar expects to start mass producing Turkey's first domestically manufactured tanks at either the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017. The tank will have a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun and will be protected against biological, chemical and radioactive attacks. The planned maximum speed is set at 70 kilometers per hour, thanks to a 1,800 horsepower engine. Otokar has been in the defense industry for 21 years. To date, it has produced 25,000 military vehicles and has exported to 15 countries. Under the $500 million contract, Otokar will produce 250 tanks in the first batch. Environment and Urban Planning Minister İdris Güllüce's daughter and other relatives have purchased large amounts of land in an area that was shortly thereafter declared part of the industrial zone of the Karasu district of Sakarya province, a daily reported on Wednesday. The Meydan daily said that Güllüce's daughter, Zeynep Zehra Hulkiender, and another close relative, Yusuf Güllüce, purchased decares of valuable land in the district's İhsaniye neighborhood at prices far below current market value in February, just a month before the land was added to the Sakarya industrial zone by a Cabinet decision. The value of the land skyrocketed just a month after Güllüce's family members made the purchases. The report called into the question why it was that though an area that had been expropriated based on a zoning decision made months before, in April 2014, to establish the industrial zone in Karasu, the authorities changed the declared plan and redefined the intended industrial zone to include the plots purchased by Güllüce's relatives. It was reported that Hulkiender purchased roughly 700 square meters of land in February, and that Yusuf Güllüce also bought 20,730 square meters of land in the same area. The report further claimed that other relatives of Güllüce also purchased valuable plots of land in the İhsaniye neighborhood before the industrial zone was redefined. While the estimated price of the land was around TL 30,000-40,000 per decare last year, it is now worth nearly TL 55,000-60,000, constituting as much as a 100 percent rise in the value of the land because of the zoning change and a profit for Güllüce's relatives. Their purchases of the land have been questioned by the opposition. Republican People's Party (CHP) Karasu Branch head Bülent Ülkü reacted harshly to Güllüce's relatives' purchases of such valuable land, saying, "Güllüce's relatives bought decares of land in İhsaniye. If anybody wonders about the authenticity of it, [they] can review the deeds registry and see the truth." -

With just one day remaining until the June 7 parliamentary election, reports of voter registration forms sent to non-existent people registered at imaginary addresses and claims that ballot papers and ballot box seals have been stolen in Sakarya province have deepened concerns over possible election fraud. Sakarya Bar Association President Zafer Kazan claimed on Twitter on Thursday that two sacks of ballot papers and ballot box seals to be used in Sunday's election had been stolen in Sakarya. Kazan further claimed those ballot papers have been sent to fraudulent identities. In one of his tweets, Kazan said that the items in question were stolen from a sports hall that will be used as a polling station in the Serdivan district of Sakarya. The Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has since launched an investigation. In a report published in the Bugün daily on Thursday, a group set up by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in İstanbul's Kadıköy district has found that voter registration forms had been sent to a total of 2,860 people who are not residents of Kadıköy. CHP Kadıköy district Chairman Ali Narin said: “For instance, just two people reside in an apartment in the fourth floor of one block. However, more than two people have been registered as voters living at this two-person apartment. This family called us and told us that two non-existent people had been registered as living at their apartment. This has proved that there are many nonexistent voters in Kadıköy.” Similarly, Nalan Dilaverler, who lives in an apartment block in the Bakırköy district of İstanbul, found out that 12 voter registration forms had been sent to the block by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) despite the fact that there are only eight apartments in the building. She noted that four of the registration papers correspond to fake addresses. “In our block, the apartments are numbered from four to 11. However, four voter registration papers were sent to apartments numbered one, two, three and 12,” Dilaverler said. Noting that there were no ID numbers written on these voter registration forms, she said that she had informed several public institutions including the muhtar (neighborhood head), the Bakırköy Registry Office and the provincial election board about the situation. Saying that the registry office is currently reviewing the issue, Dilaverler maintained that she will keep an eye on proceedings during election day and watch out for any fraudulent activity. -

The ruins of a Turkish bath, which was constructed in 1555 for Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, have been unearthed in the Sapanca district of western Sakarya province and taken under protection. The archaeological efforts to unearth the Rüstempaşa social complex, which also included the ruins of an ancient Turkish bath thought to have been constructed by Vizier Rustem Pasha, were launched recently. The excavation work revealed the ruins marked significant architectural traits with reference to its historical age. The excavation works, when completed, will also give birth to a new historical social space in Sapanca, as the ruins will be illuminated with a special transparent glass, and bowers will be launched in the middle of the platform. 9 dead, 7 injured in 3 traffic accidents across Turkey
Three people died and three were injured in a traffic accident on the TEM highway near Sakarya early on Thursday morning, while six more were killed in an accident in the eastern province of Erzurum on the same day. The first accident took place in the Hendek district of Sakarya province when a van hit a car that was parked in a highway emergency lane, destroying the car, which had a license plate numbered 22 LE 719. The injured -- Fecri Çelik, Adnan Çelik and Erol Çelik -- were taken from the area by teams from the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and sent to a hospital for treatment. The opening of the Great Governor Mustafa, his wife Emine Auspicious Great Lady, Deputy Mayor of London Fevzi Sword of Justice Judiciary Committee Chairman Ahmet Akyuz, Deputy Governor Farouk Singles, District Governors, Mayors, City Police Chief Mustafa Aktas, his wife Hatice Aktas, City National training Manager Yavuz Selim Sandıkçı, District public Education Managers, Apartment Managers, teachers, trainees, and many citizens participated.
Festival jointly organized by the Centre for Adult Education Adult Education Centers 17 opening of the Great Governor Mustafa, his wife Emine Auspicious older lady and the other participants in the ceremony held members of the protocol. After the opening ceremony, the Governor and his older trainees received information by visiting stadiums.

Even though 4,000 people in Sakarya province lost their lives when the Marmara region was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Aug. 17, 1999 that left at least 18,000 people dead in total and many others injured, there are still thousands of people in Sakarya living in more than 900 flats that were moderately damaged from the earthquake and need urgent repairs.
Experts warn Turkey may suffer another tragedy and many have expressed their concerns about the readiness of the country's most populous city, İstanbul, and its surrounding cities such as Sakarya and Kocaeli in the event of a big quake.
Sakarya Chamber of Civil Engineers President Hüsnü Gürpınar told Today's Zaman the high-rise buildings that were moderately damaged during the 1999 earthquake and have not been repaired pose a great danger to those living in them in the event of an earthquake. Gürpınar said the Sakarya Municipality and governor's office decided to demolish those buildings three years ago after the deadline to repair them passed. According to Gürpınar, there are currently 500 moderate-risk buildings in Sakarya, including high-rises, that are home to 900 households and thousands of people.
The Sakarya Municipality built 466 residences for earthquake victims after the 1999 earthquake, whose epicenter was 18 kilometers away from the city center. However, most of the victims with priority to purchase the buildings were not interested because the houses were far from the city.
According to Gürpınar, apart from those buildings with moderate damage, the other buildings in Sakarya do not meet earthquake safety standards. Gürpınar believes that more than 25,000 buildings in Sakarya must be checked. “More than 60 percent of the buildings in Sakarya are over 20 years old and most of them were constructed without any civil engineering supervision and do not have registered licenses,” he said.
Underlining that urban transformation projects in the city were initiated incorrectly, Gürpınar said there are currently three such projects in the city, none of which places a priority on earthquakes. According to Law No. 6306 regulating urban transformation projects, earthquake proofing must be a priority in these kinds of projects.
The Aug.17, 1999 earthquake served as an eye-opener for Turkey, with many state authorities pledging to take the necessary measures for quake preparedness to avoid similar tragedies in the future and to minimize damage and losses in the event of a powerful tremor; however, the measures that have been taken since then show the country is not better prepared for a major earthquake than before 1999.
Geologists have been warning for years that they are expecting a powerful earthquake between magnitudes 7.2 and 7.8 on the Richter scale to hit İstanbul and the region.

The prototype of the country's first domestically manufactured tank, the Altay, was tested in Sakarya province on Friday.
Under the Altay tank project, launched by the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Turkey's first national tank will be built by Koç Holding's Otokar in cooperation with Hyundai Rotem and Germany's MTU.
The design phase of the tank is now complete, and the first prototype was tested out in Sakarya's Arifiye district where Otokar established Turkey's first test center for tanks. SSM officials were there to observe the first test drive.Defense authorities had allocated $500 million to fund the production of the prototype. The tank's modular shield was designed by Turkey's Roketsan, while MTU will provide the diesel engines. Hyundai Rotem will contribute technological support, while the tank's main artillery system will be produced by the state-owned Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK).
ASELSAN, a defense industry giant that produces technology for the Turkish military, will design the tank's munitions control system. Otokar expects to start mass producing Turkey's first domestically manufactured tanks at either the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017. The tank will have a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun and will be protected against biological, chemical and radioactive attacks. The planned maximum speed is set at 70 kilometers per hour, thanks to a 1,800 horsepower engine.
Otokar has been in the defense industry for 21 years. To date, it has produced 25,000 military vehicles and has exported to 15 countries. The prototype of the country's first domestically manufactured tank, the Altay, was tested in Sakarya province on Friday.
Under the Altay tank project, launched by the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Turkey's first national tank will be built by Koç Holding's Otokar in cooperation with Hyundai Rotem and Germany's MTU.
The design phase of the tank is now complete, and the first prototype was tested out in Sakarya's Arifiye district where Otokar established Turkey's first test center for tanks. SSM officials were there to observe the first test drive.Defense authorities had allocated $500 million to fund the production of the prototype. The tank's modular shield was designed by Turkey's Roketsan, while MTU will provide the diesel engines. Hyundai Rotem will contribute technological support, while the tank's main artillery system will be produced by the state-owned Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK).
ASELSAN, a defense industry giant that produces technology for the Turkish military, will design the tank's munitions control system. Otokar expects to start mass producing Turkey's first domestically manufactured tanks at either the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017. The tank will have a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun and will be protected against biological, chemical and radioactive attacks. The planned maximum speed is set at 70 kilometers per hour, thanks to a 1,800 horsepower engine.
Otokar has been in the defense industry for 21 years. To date, it has produced 25,000 military vehicles and has exported to 15 countries. Environment and Urban Planning Minister İdris Güllüce's daughter and other relatives have purchased large amounts of land in an area that was shortly thereafter declared part of the industrial zone of the Karasu district of Sakarya province, a daily reported on Wednesday.
The Meydan daily said that Güllüce's daughter, Zeynep Zehra Hulkiender, and another close relative, Yusuf Güllüce, purchased decares of valuable land in the district's İhsaniye neighborhood at prices far below current market value in February, just a month before the land was added to the Sakarya industrial zone by a Cabinet decision. The value of the land skyrocketed just a month after Güllüce's family members made the purchases.
The report called into the question why it was that though an area that had been expropriated based on a zoning decision made months before, in April 2014, to establish the industrial zone in Karasu, the authorities changed the declared plan and redefined the intended industrial zone to include the plots purchased by Güllüce's relatives.
It was reported that Hulkiender purchased roughly 700 square meters of land in February, and that Yusuf Güllüce also bought 20,730 square meters of land in the same area. The report further claimed that other relatives of Güllüce also purchased valuable plots of land in the İhsaniye neighborhood before the industrial zone was redefined. While the estimated price of the land was around TL 30,000-40,000 per decare last year, it is now worth nearly TL 55,000-60,000, constituting as much as a 100 percent rise in the value of the land because of the zoning change and a profit for Güllüce's relatives. Their purchases of the land have been questioned by the opposition.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Karasu Branch head Bülent Ülkü reacted harshly to Güllüce's relatives' purchases of such valuable land, saying, "Güllüce's relatives bought decares of land in İhsaniye. If anybody wonders about the authenticity of it, [they] can review the deeds registry and see the truth."

With just one day remaining until the June 7 parliamentary election, reports of voter registration forms sent to non-existent people registered at imaginary addresses and claims that ballot papers and ballot box seals have been stolen in Sakarya province have deepened concerns over possible election fraud.
Sakarya Bar Association President Zafer Kazan claimed on Twitter on Thursday that two sacks of ballot papers and ballot box seals to be used in Sunday's election had been stolen in Sakarya. Kazan further claimed those ballot papers have been sent to fraudulent identities. In one of his tweets, Kazan said that the items in question were stolen from a sports hall that will be used as a polling station in the Serdivan district of Sakarya. The Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has since launched an investigation.
In a report published in the Bugün daily on Thursday, a group set up by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in İstanbul's Kadıköy district has found that voter registration forms had been sent to a total of 2,860 people who are not residents of Kadıköy. CHP Kadıköy district Chairman Ali Narin said: “For instance, just two people reside in an apartment in the fourth floor of one block. However, more than two people have been registered as voters living at this two-person apartment. This family called us and told us that two non-existent people had been registered as living at their apartment. This has proved that there are many nonexistent voters in Kadıköy.”
Similarly, Nalan Dilaverler, who lives in an apartment block in the Bakırköy district of İstanbul, found out that 12 voter registration forms had been sent to the block by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) despite the fact that there are only eight apartments in the building. She noted that four of the registration papers correspond to fake addresses.
“In our block, the apartments are numbered from four to 11. However, four voter registration papers were sent to apartments numbered one, two, three and 12,” Dilaverler said.
Noting that there were no ID numbers written on these voter registration forms, she said that she had informed several public institutions including the muhtar (neighborhood head), the Bakırköy Registry Office and the provincial election board about the situation.
Saying that the registry office is currently reviewing the issue, Dilaverler maintained that she will keep an eye on proceedings during election day and watch out for any fraudulent activity.

The ruins of a Turkish bath, which was constructed in 1555 for Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, have been unearthed in the Sapanca district of western Sakarya province and taken under protection.
The archaeological efforts to unearth the Rüstempaşa social complex, which also included the ruins of an ancient Turkish bath thought to have been constructed by Vizier Rustem Pasha, were launched recently.
The excavation work revealed the ruins marked significant architectural traits with reference to its historical age. The excavation works, when completed, will also give birth to a new historical social space in Sapanca, as the ruins will be illuminated with a special transparent glass, and bowers will be launched in the middle of the platform.
The platform is expected to be used for social events such as historical and cultural conferences and programs.
Sapanca Mayor Prof. Aydın Yılmazer also announced restoration work would not be restricted to the Turkish bath, as the Uzunkum Rahime Sultan Mosque will also be included in the work, along with many other artifacts in the region.

Three people died and three were injured in a traffic accident on the TEM highway near Sakarya early on Thursday morning, while six more were killed in an accident in the eastern province of Erzurum on the same day.
The first accident took place in the Hendek district of Sakarya province when a van hit a car that was parked in a highway emergency lane, destroying the car, which had a license plate numbered 22 LE 719. The injured -- Fecri Çelik, Adnan Çelik and Erol Çelik -- were taken from the area by teams from the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and sent to a hospital for treatment. The accident blocked traffic, leading to a build-up of vehicles on the TEM highway.
In another accident, six people were killed when their vehicle fell into a river in the Aziziye district of Erzurum on Thursday. According to media reports, the passengers were on the way to Çanakkale to spend their Eid al-Fitr holiday there.
Four others, including a child, were mildly injured in yet another traffic accident, this time in Kırşehir province, at around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday. They were sent to Ahi Evran University Research and Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Six more were also injured in another traffic accident in the Malkara district in Tekirdağ province on Thursday, when 42-year-old driver Yusuf Göktay lost control of his vehicle and hit a road sign.
Meanwhile, people blocked Bağdat Street in the Kadıköy district of İstanbul early on Thursday morning to protest the behavior of drivers on Turkey's roads, which is one of the biggest problems in the country. Recently, two people died and two were injured in separate traffic accidents that took place on Bağdat Street.

Three people died and three were injured in a traffic accident on the TEM highway near Sakarya early on Thursday morning, while six more were killed in an accident in the eastern province of Erzurum on the same day.
The first accident took place in the Hendek district of Sakarya province when a van hit a car that was parked in a highway emergency lane, destroying the car, which had a license plate numbered 22 LE 719. The injured -- Fecri Çelik, Adnan Çelik and Erol Çelik -- were taken from the area by teams from the Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and sent to a hospital for treatment. The accident blocked traffic, leading to a build-up of vehicles on the TEM highway.
In another accident, six people were killed when their vehicle fell into a river in the Aziziye district of Erzurum on Thursday. According to media reports, the passengers were on the way to Çanakkale to spend their Eid al-Fitr holiday there.
Four others, including a child, were mildly injured in yet another traffic accident, this time in Kırşehir province, at around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday. They were sent to Ahi Evran University Research and Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Six more were also injured in another traffic accident in the Malkara district in Tekirdağ province on Thursday, when 42-year-old driver Yusuf Göktay lost control of his vehicle and hit a road sign.
Meanwhile, people blocked Bağdat Street in the Kadıköy district of İstanbul early on Thursday morning to protest the behavior of drivers on Turkey's roads, which is one of the biggest problems in the country. Recently, two people died and two were injured in separate traffic accidents that took place on Bağdat Street.

This opulently furnished 1865 building was designed by Sarkis Balyan, brother of Nikoğos (architect of Dolmabahçe). It delighted both Sultan Abdül Aziz (r 1861–76), who commissioned it, and the many foreign dignitaries who visited. Its last imperial 'guest' was the former sultan Abdül Hamit II, who spent the last years of his life (1913–18) under house arrest here. Look for the whimsical marble bathing pavilions by the water's edge; one was for men, the other for the women of the harem.
A compulsory guided tour whips you past rooms decorated with frescoes of naval scenes, Bohemian crystal chandeliers, Ming vases and sumptuous Hereke carpets. It has a grand selamlik (ceremonial quarters) and a small but opulent harem. Highlights include the downstairs hall with the huge marble pool used for cooling during summer, the elaborately painted and gilded sultan's apartment, and the dining room with chairs covered in gazelle skin. After the tour, you can enjoy a glass of tea in the garden cafe.
The easiest way to visit Beylerbeyi is to take the Dentur Avraysa hop-on/hop-off tour from Kabataş.

It is not definitely known when Bolu was first founded. There are some archaeological findings dating back about 100,000[citation needed] years that suggest the region was inhabited then.
The area now in Bolu Province was in eastern Bithynia and southwestern Paphlagonia. The town of Bithynium from which the area takes its name is the modern Bolu. By about 375 BCE, Bithynia had gained its independence from Persia, and King Bas subsequently defeated Alexander's attempt to take it.[3] The Bithynian region with parts of Paphlagonia remained its own kingdom until 88 BCE when it briefly came under Mithridates VI and the Kingdom of Pontus. With Roman help the last Bithynian king, Nicomedes IV regained his throne, but on his death bequeathed the kingdom to Rome. This led to the Third Mithridatic War and the fall of Pontus, the area was incorporated into the Roman Empire as a single province joining Paphlagonia with Bithynia. Under the folling Byzantine Empire the Bolu area was divided from western Bithynia at the Sakarya River, with western Bithynia keeping the name. The Sakarya is still the southern and western boundary of the province.
The Byzantine Empire briefly lost the Bolu area to the Seljuk Turks after the 1071 Battle of Manzikert, but recovered it under the Komnenian restoration. After the end of the Komnenos dynasty, the Turks gradually took the Bolu area back.
About 1240 the Seljuk Turks took the eastern part of the Bolu area (i.e. the Paphlagonian part) from the Byzantine Empire and incorporated it into the Sultanate of Rum. Due to their assistance in taking it and Sinop, the Chobanids were given that territory and adjacent areas to the north and east to rule. The Chobanids were relatively independent of the Sultan. That eastern area fell under the Isfendiyarids between 1292 and 1461. In 1461 it was incorporated into the rest of the Ottoman Empire.
By 1265, the western part of the Bolu area was again acquired by the Seljuk Turks, but it fell to the arms of Orhan I and the Ottoman Empire in the early to mid-1300s. The two areas were reunited in 1461, under Mehmed II. In the 1864 Ottoman Empire administrative reorganization, Bolu was created as an independent sanjak,[4] although it was geographically part of the Vilayet of Kastamonu.
