An altar cloth is used by various religious groups to cover an altar. It may be used as a sign of respect towards the holiness of the altar, as in the Catholic Church. Because many altars are made of wood and are often ornate and unique, cloth may then be used to protect the altar surface. In other cases, the cloth serves to beautify a rather mundane construction underneath.
Special cloths (not necessarily made of linen) cover the altar in many Christian churches during services and celebrations, and are often left on the altar when it is not in use. At the turn of the 20th century the Roman Catholic Church considered only linen or hemp to be acceptable as material for altar cloths, although in earlier centuries silk or cloth of gold or silver were used. The Anglican Communion had similar rules in that period.
At that time, the Roman Rite required the use of three altar cloths, to which a cere cloth, not classified as an altar cloth, was generally added. This was a piece of heavy linen treated with wax (cera, from which "cere" is derived, is the Latin word for "wax") to protect the altar linens from the dampness of a stone altar, and also to prevent the altar from being stained by any wine that may be spilled. It was exactly the same size as the mensa (the flat rectangular top of the altar).

Your tarot reading space should be a personal and even sacred space where you do your readings. In this video I talk about my opinions of where to read the cards and what items you may want in your reading space. I also stress that you should make things personal and unique to your personality and practice. A richly embroidered altar cloth, preserved for centuries in a small rural church in Bacton, Herefordshire, has recently been identified by experts as a piece of a sixteenth century dress, which may even have belonged to Queen Elizabeth I herself. Rumoured for centuries to be connected to the Tudor Queen via her servant, Blanche Parry, the story of this remarkable object is uncovered in a new book, from Historic Royal Palaces Joint Chief Curator Tracy Borman: ‘The Private Lives of the Tudors.’ Dating from the last decades of the sixteenth century, the altar cloth is a treasured possession of St Faith’s Church, Bacton, where until recently, it hung in a glass case on a wall, after having been retired as an altar cloth over a hundred years ago. Bacton was the birthplace of one of Elizabet...
My process (sped up so it doesn't take ages), for hand painting one of my silk mandala altar cloths. This is 100% crepe de chine silk. It's a water-based resist (or gutta) that I use to draw the outlines in the first step, and then mix silk dyes and use sumi brushes to paint in the colors. And it will be steamed to set the colors, now that it's all done. I posted the finished piece on etsy here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/294012973/green-and-gold-petal-mandala-hand

A quick description of the purpose of altar cloths and some of mine.
Paper napkins are a practical, inexpensive and colourful way to enhance your altar cloth.
My silk painting process for one of my tarot / altar cloths. I use a water-based resist (also called gutta) to draw the outlines as the first step, and then mix colors of silk dyes and use sumi brushes to paint in the colors. Painted on 100% crepe de chine silk. Next it will be steamed to set the colors, now that it's all done. (Sorry about the couple of gaps, when the camera shut off...) Just a quick haul video..really happy with the new altar cloth.
An altar cloth, which was once stored under a vicar's bed in Herefordshire, is believed to have been part of a dress once worn by Queen Elizabeth
I created this video for any new Pagans or Wiccans in the community and also people who may just be interested. Setting up an altar is a widely-known part of Wicca and although many people set theirs up differently, this is how I arrange mine. I would just like to say that my way of setting up my altar is not the universal way, meaning you can take inspiration from this but you should always follow your heart and set your altar up how you feel it should be. Blessed be! *Time-lapsed Moon video downloaded from Videezy (Creative Commons).
Your altar can really be as simple or elaborate as you like, as long as it is conducive to prayer. The most basic requirements are just: a surface, and some sort of prayer aid(s) to place on it. You probably have many things around your house already...a crucifix, images, icons, statues, candles, holy water, Rosaries, prayer cards, flowers, prayer books, incense, blessed objects, relics(!) ....anything that might lift your heart to God or help you to pray. Many people like to put down an altar cloth or linen of some sort. If you like, you could even find/make some in different colors, and switch them. http://www.apscor.com/donations.html All 4 items on your altar have an expanding power to carry your prayers, words and thoughts into other dimensions. Lesson 4 -- The Altar Notes The main purpose of an altar is to provide focus. It can be used to focus on the divine powers -- this is worship. It can be used to focus energy for making change in our lives- this is magic. It can be used to focus on communication with our Higher selves and spirit guides -- This is meditation. All of these -- worship, magic and meditation -- are ways of focusing our psychic energy to accomplish specific ends. The altar can aid in that focus and can be used to increase that energy and enhance the result. The first thing to think about is where to put your altar Once you have decided what room to put your altar in, you may want to think about Geomancy. Geomancy is the art of reading the earth's energies and aligning ourselves and our works to them. For ...

She also is a tarot reader, astrologer, Reiki practitioner, and for more than 40 years, a spirituality teacher and lecturer. She is a career paralegal and is in the process of becoming a licensed private investigator. She thinks it is important to teach people to be masters of themselves. Everyone is psychic and special. They generally just need a guide to teach them what that really means, how to recognize it, and how to incorporate it into their daily lives. People get hundreds of hunches and feelings a day. It’s just a matter of recognizing them. She also thinks one way to learn about yourself is to trace your family history. After all, you chose ...

Pat Gaudy, a beloved member of Grace Lutheran for more than 35 years, was called to her eternal reward on 12/2/13 after a brief illness. Pat spent countless hours in faithful service at Grace as a member of the Altar Guild, using her skills as a seamstress to make altar cloths, as well as sew and embroider Communion cloths, dressing the altar for worship, polishing the brassware, and arranging the altar flowers. Even at the youthful age of 84, Pat regularly participated in our quarterly cleanup days, pot lucks, and reception lunches. Pat will most be remembered for her time volunteering in the kitchen. She spent over 30 years in faithful service overseeing God's kitchen, making sure the fellowship time, special dinners, and pot lucks included plenty of coffee and delicious food. Pat also...

The pine incense holder with two holes, for long and short sticks of incense, was carved by hand by Gustavo Paffen. The red incense burner was purchased in 1985 by Les in Japan.
