Volodymyr-Volynskyi

Volodymyr-Volynsky (Ukrainian: Володимир-Волинський, Polish: Włodzimierz Wołyński, Russian: Влади́мир-Волы́нский, Yiddish: לודמיר‎, Latin: Lodomeria) is a city located in Volyn Oblast, in north-western Ukraine. Serving as the administrative centre of the Volodymyr-Volynskyi Raion, the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast. The city is the historic centre of the region of Volhynia and the historic capital of the Principality of Volhynia. Population: 38,870 (2013 est.).

The mediaeval Latin name of the town became the namesake of the 19th century Austro-Hungarian Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , of which the town itself was not a part. 5 kilometres (3 miles) south from Volodymyr is Zymne, where the oldest Orthodox Monastery in Volynia is located.

History

The city is one of the oldest towns in Ruthenia. It took its name after King Volodymyr the Great (born in the Budyatychi, Ukrainian: Будятичі, near contemporary Volodymyr-Volynsky), who founded a stronghold on the lands taken from polish tribe of Lendians around 981. In 988 the city became the capital of Volodymyr Principality and a seat of an Orthodox bishopric as mentioned in the Primary Chronicle.

Race Imboden

Race Imboden (born April 17, 1993 in Tampa, Florida) is an American foil fencer and menswear fashion model. A three-time Pan American champion, he took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics, earned a team silver medal in the 2013 World Fencing Championships and won the 2014–15 Fencing World Cup.

Personal life

Imboden was born in Tampa, Florida. His parents gave him his name after the Jonny Quest character Race Bannon. He moved to Atlanta at a young age. His first sports were inline skating and BMX; an inline skating accident left him with a crooked nose and a scar on his lip. He was playing with a toy sword in a park when a stranger suggested to his parents that he take up fencing. Shortly afterwards his family moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York City.

Imboden joined the Fencer's Club in Manhattan, where he first met Jed Dupree and Dan Kellner, both of whom were foil fencing athletes in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Both men would later work with Race as a student. Imboden was educated at the Dwight School, which supported his budding sports career. He fought his first international competition at age 14 and later earned the bronze medal in the cadet (U17) world fencing championships in 2010. After graduating High School in spring 2011 he decided not to go to Notre Dame, with which he had signed a letter of intent, but to take a year off to focus on his training. He became a member of the Brooklyn Bridge Fencing Club, in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, with Dan Kellner as his coach. He finally opted for St. John's University in New York, because it is closer to his family and coach. He left school during his freshman year to concentrate on his modelling and international career.
