Interior ministry

An interior ministry (sometimes ministry of internal affairs or ministry of home affairs) is a government ministry typically responsible for policing, emergency management, national security, supervision of local governments, conduct of elections, public administration and immigration matters. The ministry is often headed by a minister of the interior or a minister of home affairs. In some countries, matters relating to the maintenance of law and order and the administration of justice are the responsibility of a separate justice ministry.

In some countries, policing and national security belong to a separate ministry (often titled "ministry of public order", "ministry of security" etc.), with the interior ministry being limited to control over local governments, public administration, elections etc. Notable examples include Greece (ministry of citizen protection) and Israel (ministry of public security).

In countries with a federal constitution, an interior minister will often be found at both the federal and sub-national levels. Similarly, autonomous entities and dependent territories may also have interior ministers.

Ministry of the Interior and Transport

The Ministry of the Interior, Public Works and Housing is a government ministry in Argentina. It manages issues relating to domestic politics such as immigration, as well as transport in the country after it took over the Secretariat of Transport from the Ministry of Planning and Public Works in 2012. The current minister is Rogelio Frigerio, and the headquarters of the ministry can be found on the 25 Mayo Avenue in the barrio of San Nicolás.

Federal Ministry of the Interior (Austria)

The Federal Ministry of the Interior (German: Bundesministerium für Inneres, colloquially Innenministerium), abbreviated: BM.I, is the interior ministry of the Austrian Federal Government. Its headquarters are at the Palais Modena in Vienna. The current Minister for the Interior is Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP).

History

Until 1848 internal affairs of the country was under the responsibility of the Austro-Bohemian Court Chancellery which was established by Empress Maria Theresia. In 1848 the ministry was established with the name of the Ministry of the Interior. Between 1918 and 1920 it was called State Office of the Interior. Then it was merged with the ministry of education and was renamed as State Office and Federal Ministry of the Interior and of Education. The body was integrated into the federal government in 1923. Following World War II it was renamed into its current title, Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Responsibilities

The federal agency on cabinet-level is charged with the matters of public security, citizenship and civil status including legal names, elections, referendums and popular petitions as well as emergency management and the alternative civilian service.

Ministry of Internal Affairs (Ukraine)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Міністерство внутрішніх справ України, Ministerstvo vnutrishnikh sprav Ukrayiny, MVS) executes state policy for the protection of rights and liberties of citizens, investigates unlawful acts against the interest of society and state, fights crime, provides civil order, ensures civil security, traffic safety, and protects the security and protection of important individuals. It is a centralised agency headed by a Minister of Internal Affairs. The ministry closely operates with the office of General Prosecutor of Ukraine. It oversees the National Police of Ukraine (police service) and the National Guard of Ukraine (gendarmerie).

Formerly, the Ministry directly controlled the Ukrainian national law enforcement agency, termed the militsiya (Ukrainian: міліція). This changed in July 2015, with the introduction of reforms by Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko to reduce corruption, whereby the militsiya was replaced with the National Police. Ukraine's militsiya was widely regarded as corrupt, and it has received severe accusations of torture and ill-treatment.
