Following up the town hall session at AGU this past year (Forward Facing Ethics - What is the Role of Scientific Societies in Responding to Harassment and Other Workplace Climate Issues?"), ESWN president Erika Marin-Spiotta, AWG President Blair Schneider, and Mary Anne Holmes, past president of AWG and co-editor of the publication "Women in the Geosciences: Practical, Positive Practices towards Parity", have put out an opinion piece in EOS of how we want to see AGU, and scientific societies in general, leading the way in dealing with sexual harassment.
I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work with these fantastic women, and hope you will take a few minutes to read this and see where this conversation and actions are headed in the next years!

AWG Professional Excellence Awards: The AWG Professional Excellence awards will go to women who, throughout their careers, have made distinguished contributions in each of the three following professional areas: Government/regulatory, Private industry/consulting and Academia/research. Nominations will be solicited from the AWG membership at large. Professional excellence is broadly defined, and may include accomplishments such as: 1. Breadth and depth of professional accomplishments 2. Mentoring of other geoscience professionals 3. Outreach and service activities 4. Membership in professional societies Nominees need not be members of AWG and those without memberships will receive a one-year professional membership with their award. AWG Minority Scholarship: This new program encourages young minority women to pursue an education and later a career in the geosciences. It provides financial aid and matches the student with a mentor in the same field who will offer guidance and support. This exchange will enhance the student’s experience and provide a view of the world ahead.
Award Amount: One or more awards totaling $6,000 will be given each summer for use during the next academic year (awards include AWG membership) Application Deadline is June 30th each year. AWG Sand and Takken Travel Awards: These competitive awards provide women geoscience students with support to present their research at either the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (Sand Award) or any meeting other than the Geological Society of America meeting (Takken award). These travel awards are named for Virginia (Ginny) Sand (1928-2007), an award-winning geoscience teacher and world traveler and for Suzanne Takken (1925-1997), an avid traveler and strong supporter of women in geoscience.
The Sand award is to be used to help defray travel, lodging, registration fee, and other expenses associated with the presentation of the awardee’s research at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America including but not exclusive to sessions sponsored by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
The Takken award is to be used to help defray travel, lodging, registration fee, and other expenses associated with the presentation of the awardee’s research at a national or international professional geoscience meeting other than the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America.
