How 'Ghostbusters' Gave Birth to the Modern Blockbuster

How time flies when you're getting slimed. Ghostbusters turns 32 today, and the titanic influence of this nostalgia totem was obvious even before the upcoming all-female reboot prompted mass fanboy conniptions and the gnashing of Cheetos-stained teeth. To some fans, the attachment is so strong that any discussion of fandom's golden calf takes leave of basic logic. But the legacy of this 1984 juggernaut extends far beyond legions of nostalgic, anonymous misogynists on the Web. Steven Spielberg may have singlehandedly invented the modern blockbuster with Jaws, but nine years later, Ivan Reitman »

See Martin Short Reprise 'Jiminy Glick' in Absurd Drake Interview

Martin Short revived his famed 'Jiminy Glick' character for his new variety show Maya & Marty with an absurd interview with "living legend of rapsterdom," Drake.

"This is so much fun for me because normally I interview celebrities," Glick says. From there, the critic asks why some people don't listen to rap and joke about how he has never heard a single song by Drake, including his Number One hit "One Dance" off Views. "I have a feeling that if I heard it, I'd switch it off," Glick adds. »

Watch Dana Carvey Show Off Dance Move David Bowie Taught Him

Dana Carvey brought his arsenal of impressions to Conan Tuesday night to coincide with the political primaries. During his interview, the comedian also shared memories from his days as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, which included memorable run-ins with Mick Jagger and David Bowie.

Carvey encountered Bowie by chance one evening after an SNL episode. The singer, who was smoking weed with Jagger at the time, invited Carvey and two other comedians out dancing. Unsurprisingly, Bowie was at home on the dance floor, and he was gracious enough »

Watch Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph Sing Wacky Variety Show Medley

Tina "Trina" Fey united with Maya "Myra" Rudolph on Tuesday's Maya & Marty to talk about their love for Seventies-era variety show music medleys. The former SNL castmates climbed atop tall (arguably too tall) stools, where they shared childhood memories and sang period-centric material into skinny (arguably too skinny) microphones.

"It really has always been a dream of mine to have a variety show where I can perform with my friends," Rudolph reminisced. "I remember when I was little, my brother and I would act out Sonny & Cher – until we found out they were married, »

'Outlander': Caitriona Balfe on Sex, Violence and Time Travel

At first glance, the premise behind Outlander — the hour-long series now in its second season on Starz — sounds kind of ridiculous. A married World War II nurse time travels back to mid-1700s Scotland, falls in love with a rugged, dashing Highland warrior and becomes involved with the Jacobite uprising against the British? Huh? Based on the popular Diana Gabaldon book series — the first of which was released 25 years ago (and is still going) –  there's far more to this fantastical time-traveling historical bodice ripper than kilts and corsets. Full of bold, »

Watch Skrillex, Chance the Rapper Sing About Breakfast Food

Skrillex and Chance the Rapper have a longstanding collaborative relationship – a photo of the pair appeared on Instagram back in 2014. In March, Skrillex debuted a remix of Hundred Waters' “Show Me Love,” and the famous producer recruited Chance to provide new verses.

The two artists were presented with a different sort of remix challenge on The Late Show this week: after Stephen Colbert delivered a series of jokes about new developments in the world of breakfast cereal, Skrillex and Chance put the monologue to music. Most of the burden »

"Today my dentist gave me laughing gas, and in my drugged-up state, I told him that I wanted to hang out with him," Hawke sang. "We're going to an art museum next Tuesday." Not to be outdone, Fallon complained, "Today, I got back my history term paper. »

7 June 2016 8:06 AM, PDT

Death Cab for Cutie brought the rumbling grooves of Kintsugi's "No Room in Frame" to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday.

The group moved effortlessly through the slow burning cut off their 2015 album. The song's keyboard flourishes frame Ben Gibbard's heartfelt vocals. "No Room in Frame" builds on the dreamy, cinematic twang of Gibbard's guitar.

Death Cab for Cutie released Kintsugi last year, marking their eighth LP and last with founding guitarist Chris Walla, who announced his departure from the group during recording. Death Cab has a handful »

7 June 2016 7:22 AM, PDT

Donald Trump came under scrutiny after making controversial remarks about U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel's Mexican heritage. Late Night host Seth Meyers took "A Closer Look" at the issue that could potentially detail the Gop frontrunner.

Trump insinuated the Indiana-born judge overseeing the Trump University case was unfit to adjudicate because of his ethnic background. "He's Mexican," Trump said last week regarding the case. "We're building a wall between here and Mexico."

"Some have called Trump's attacks 'racist' while others have called them 'very racist,'" Meyers said. »

Together, Corden and the current Rolling Stone cover star sang the influential musical's "Guns and Ships," with Corden handling the role of Lafayette, and talked about the Tony Awards. While Miranda was nervous before the 2008 ceremony when his In the Heights was nominated because a Tony win »

Dick Cavett Talks Making Breakfast for Muhammad Ali

6 June 2016 1:46 PM, PDT

For 48 years, Dick Cavett has never quite figured out how a former standup comic from the Midwest got to be such good friends with Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer who died last Friday at age 74. The former late-night host and heavyweight champion were close in age (Cavett is five years older) and had a mutual admiration for each other. They also shared the same kind of dry wit, Cavett reveals – and pulled as many pranks on each other as they shared home-cooked meals. Cavett tells Rolling Stone that he will »

Reality Bites: How 'UnREAL' Became a Runaway Hit for Lifetime

6 June 2016 12:27 PM, PDT

It looks like a conventional reality dating show: A gaggle of beautiful girls in ball gowns pull up in limousines — or, if they’re very lucky, a horse-drawn carriage straight outta Cinderella — to a decked-out mansion, ready to meet their "suitor," a dashing British hotel heir who resembles an Irl Prince Charming. (Imagine The Bachelor filtered through a Disney-on-Ice princess extravaganza.) The usual suspects are all there: the pretty one, the funny one, the bitchy one, the cheerleader. You can practically smell the champagne and Shalimar wafting off the screen. »

Michael J. Fox on Muhammad Ali: 'He Made No Apologies, But Understood Kindness'

6 June 2016 10:09 AM, PDT

Emmy-winning actor Michael J. Fox received a life-altering diagnosis for Parkinson's disease in 1991 at the age of 29. Doctors predicted he had less than 10 years of work left in his career. But Fox, who turns 55 this week, remains active in both the industry and his nonprofit work.

The actor credits his perseverance and remarkable optimism to Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer – his own childhood hero – who shared his disease and died at age 74 on Friday. In 2000, Ali called Fox to discuss the disease, leading to Fox's launch of the world's largest »

After explaining the insanity of the debt-buying industry, the host unveiled his own company, Central Asset Recovery Professionals (Carp), which purchased (and forgave) nearly $15 million of medical debt from over 9,000 people. "Fuck you, Oprah!" Oliver yelled triumphantly. "I am the new Queen of Daytime Talk!"

The host also offered chilling insight into the debt industry throughout the segment. "American households collectively owe over 12 trillion dollars in debt, and right now $436 billion of that debt is seriously delinquent, »
