cummins towing heavy Got the 12500 lb skid steer with 800 lbs of attachments on a 7500 lb trailer. All behind a 9000 lb truck for a of 29,800 lbs GCVW. Pulling down the interstate at 75 mph. Got a little over 360,000 miles on at present. 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 Manual 6 Speed NV5600 Cummins 5.9 H.O. How I got my Dodge after my Toyota Tacoma frame broke. Valair dual disc clutch, Glowshift guage, Edge EZ Module Tuner. I bought a 97 Toyota Tacoma in 2012 for $3000.00. Tried to use it to haul firewood for my new firewood business. Ended up breaking the frame which was so badly rusted that it had holes in it. I learned that there was a recall from Toyota on the frame rust that was good up to 15 years. I was within one month of the deadline. Took the truck to local dealer and they gave me $9300.00 for broke back Tacoma at 14 years and 11 months. Lucked out big time. So the next week I spy a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins 24 Valve 5.9 HO with NV5600 6 speed an extended Cab and 4x4 with 311,000 miles on craigslist for only $8500.00. I jumped on it. While I was paying for it another guy was there trying to buy it. Too bad. I put a Valair dual disc organic compound clutch which is good if you plan to haul heavy loads over 20,000 lbs. Then I installed an Edge E-Z Tuner with the three power levels of 20hp, 30hp, 60hp. To monitor the engine I installed a Glowshift 3 in 1 diesel guage with Turbo Boost, EGT, and Fuel PSI. the Edbe tuner came with a boost elbow which give an added 6-8 PSI of boost above stock levels. This extra boost helps cool and power the engine with the addition of extra fuel from the tuner. I now have 356,000 miles on this truck and it regularly pulls 27,000 lbs and quite often 32,000 lbs GCW. It loves to tow heavy loads. I have towed with it down the highway and up hills with the Edge on 60 hp setting at 32,000 lbs GCVW in 105 degree temps with no trouble from EGT or coolant. This truck loves to tow heavy. Stock intake and exhaust. No plan to change them. I have installed a PacBrake PRXB exhaust brake to help manage the heavy loads while braking. The Hayes Blackbird brake controller does good with the triple axle trailer brakes but an exhaust brake helps safe wear on the brakes. The truck is tagged for 36,000 lbs. I had to get a Class A license to pull this setup. This truck suffered from the typical cracked and broken dash cover that most Dodge trucks this age suffer from. To correct this problem I installed a new dash and bezel from LMC Truck (www.LMCtruck.com). The dash cover mod is well worth the money. Good quality items. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish to remove the old dash cover and install the new one. There is a decent video on youtube by someone else. If you search for dodge dash cover it should come up in the results. The headliner was beginning to sag on the driver side and creep across the roof. There was a nice video on youtube that showed how to replace a headliner. So I ordered some Mossy Oak camo foam backed material and replaced the headliner. It took about 3 hours to remove the head board and remove the old fabric and glue on the new fabric and reinstall the headliner. The new dash and new headliner interior cab mods changed the entire look and feel of the interior in a much better way and are worth the money and effort. I installed a pair of extended tow mirrors that use the factory power and heating features of the truck. These are really handy when pulling long wide trailers. I towed for about a year without them and it was a big difference in visibility when I installed them. The goal in all my mods has been to enhance performance without sacrificing function or reliability in any way.
