Francais Pour Une Nuit

On July 7th of this year we were honored to perform at Arenes de Nimes, the historic Roman amphitheatre in Nimes, France, easily one of the most spectacular venues in the world. We thought it would be a memorable night, so we asked our friends in France to bring along a film crew to document the festivities. The result is "Francais Pour Une Nuit" (translation: "French For One Night"), the DVD of the evening including the full show, interviews with us, and five videos shot by YOU, our buddies in the audience. All this and more will be available starting November 23, 2009!
"Francais Pour Une Nuit" was extra special for us because not only was it filmed in France, but ALL aspects of the project are French as the show was filmed, recorded, and edited with French camera and recording crews, the artwork on the package and special box set (more on that in a minute!) were created by a French design team; even the credits are in French. The only non-French parts: the three Americans and one Dane on stage and the photos shot by Englishman Ross Halfin.
The DVD will be available in retail stores in France only, at www.metallica.com, or you may order online through the record company at www.metallicanimes.com. There will be three formats available: Standard DVD in a digipack including a 16 page booklet, Blu-Ray DVD, also in a digipack with the booklet, and the deluxe limited edition box set that includes the DVD, a copy of "Death Magnetic on CD," a Large T-shirt, laminated pass, and five exclusive photos (see it all below).

The Black is a rock band from Austin, Texas that formed in 2002 when singer/songwriter David Longoria began collaborating with drummer Andy Morales. The two were later joined by renowned guitarist Alan Schaefer (son of famous guitar maker Ed Schaefer) and Nick Moulos of the Austin band The Crackpipes.
The group began playing regularly at Emo's and house parties until Schaefer moved to France to teach English in 2004. Longoria joined major label act …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead during the band's hiatus, his first performance with them on The Late Show with David Letterman in January 2005. Schaefer joined the rest of the band to support Trail of Dead on their European Worlds Apart tour. During the tour Trail of Dead was the band's backing band for a handful of shows.
Their full-length album Tanglewood was recorded in 2004 and released the spring of 2005 on their own record label K Woo.
The band's next release, titled Donna, was released in the summer of 2007.
There are also two other bands with the same name which formed earlier : an Italian Doom Metal band formed in 1988 and a Swedish Black Metal band formed in 1991. Both are still active nowadays.

On July 7th of this year we were honored to perform at Arenes de Nimes, the historic Roman amphitheatre in Nimes, France, easily one of the most spectacular venues in the world. We thought it would be a memorable night, so we asked our friends in France to bring along a film crew to document the festivities. The result is "Francais Pour Une Nuit" (translation: "French For One Night"), the DVD of the evening including the full show, interviews with us, and five videos shot by YOU, our buddies in the audience. All this and more will be available starting November 23, 2009!
"Francais Pour Une Nuit" was extra special for us because not only was it filmed in France, but ALL aspects of the project are French as the show was filmed, recorded, and edited with French camera and recording crews, the artwork on the package and special box set (more on that in a minute!) were created by a French design team; even the credits are in French. The only non-French parts: the three Americans and one Dane on stage and the photos shot by Englishman Ross Halfin.
The DVD will be available in retail stores in France only, at www.metallica.com, or you may order online through the record company at www.metallicanimes.com. There will be three formats available: Standard DVD in a digipack including a 16 page booklet, Blu-Ray DVD, also in a digipack with the booklet, and the deluxe limited edition box set that includes the DVD, a copy of "Death Magnetic on CD," a Large T-shirt, laminated pass, and five exclusive photos (see it all below).

Born in the digital era The Black Wizards are four analogic musicians that throws dirty blues into the air: no bullshit, no gimmicks, just pure soul, emotion and lots of fuzz.
Drinking from the same fountains as many of the contemporary bands around, The Black Wizards present us with a set of songs that give a new twist on previously heard sounds and stamp their own personality on these long tunes that pass by seamlessly.
Permeated with barely in control guitar feedbacks like a classic long lost proto heavy rock band, The Black Wizards capture the spirit of records done with a sense of urgency lacking on some of today's groups. It's as if they have been dwelling in obscurities having learned all there is to learn with more famous '70s groups and then moving on.
Slow and heavy, The Black Wizards reach further to invoke a sonic pallet that reeks of genuine pleasure in what they do. Never losing track of rhythm and momentum, they take us deeper into their own little lake of fire. And boy, does that lake burn...If heavy riffing is your deal, look no further. Also, if frantic and relentless fuzzed out guitar solo freak outs is your thing, then get ready because these guys are not afraid to step on their fuzz pedals and eclipse you out of existence.
A solid body of work, Lake Of Fire is more than an excellent calling card into the foray of long players. It's like a huge bonfire in the middle of the night. Throughout the album, The Black Wizards display a dizzying and dazzling interplay between guitarists Joana Brito and Paulo Ferreira, held on like non sniffed glue by bassist João Mendes and completely blown to bits by explosive powerhouse drummer Helena Peixoto. All this is punctuated by Joana Brito who doubles as vocalist and adds a bluesy feel to their doom infected groove.
The best example of this ferocity is the pair of tracks "Gypsy Woman" and "Lake Of Fire". On this particular set of tracks, there are no stop signs as they grind you to the ground until you are nothing more than ashes scattered into oblivion by the wind. What links these two songs is an atomic bomb of a drum solo as if Helena Peixoto is playing Madison Square Garden in 1971 and you feel transported back to the time when drum solos were actually something to listen to!
Stand out tracks also include "I Don't Mind" and the incredibly powerful opener "Pain" which promise to be crowd pleaser. With their incredibly catchy heavy hooks, one wonders what kind of wizardry are these persons into. The subtle use of percussion also adds an extra flavour through the path of this record slowing it down a notch. When you reach the end of the record, you realize you have been bulldozed with stellar guitar work and stone age mega riffage and the search party begins to salvage your remains from the bottom of the lake.

Some 3.9 billion years ago in the heart of a distant galaxy, the tidal pull of a monster black hole shredded a star that wandered too close. X-rays produced in this event first reached Earth on March 28, 2011, when they were detected by NASA's Swift satellite. Within days, scientists concluded that the outburst, now known as Swift J1644+57, represented both the tidal disruption of a star and the sudden flare-up of a previously inactive black hole.
Now astronomers using archival observations from Swift, the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory and the Japan-led Suzaku satellite have identified the reflections of X-ray flares erupting during the event. Led by Erin Kara, a postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and the University of Maryland, College Park, the team has used these light echoes, or reverberations, to map the flow of gas near a newly awakened black hole for the first time.
Swift J1644+57 is one of only three tidal disruptions that have produced high-energy X-rays, and to date it remains the only event caught at the peak of this emission. While astronomers don't yet understand what causes flares near the black hole, when one occurs they can detect its echo a couple of minutes later as its light washes over structures in the developing accretion disk. The technique, called X-ray reverberation mapping, has been used before to explore stable disks around black holes, but this is time it has been applied to a newly formed disk produced by a tidal disruption.
Swift J1644+57's accretion disk was thicker, more turbulent and more chaotic than stable disks, which have had time to settle down into an orderly routine. One surprise is that high-energy X-rays arise from the innermost regions of the disk instead of a narrow jet of accelerated particles, as originally thought.
The researchers estimate the black hole has a mass about a million times that of the sun. They expect future improvements in understanding and modeling accretion flows will allow them to measure the black hole's spin using this data.
