A reissue of a 1920s Capitol nickelodeon roll - 'Carolina Stomp' - played by James Blythe. The piano is my 1912 Steinway 65/88-note Pianola - recorded (at the request of another YouTube member) with the front panels removed to show part of the mechanism.
Supertone 5707 "Red Hot Charleston" played by James Blythe on my 1912 Stroud Metrostyle-Themodist player piano. There is some interesting chord work in the left hand, where the 10th of a rolled chord is held out longer than the rest, giving an interesting sustain effect. The lyrics didn't seem to record well on my digital camera (sorry!), but most of it is refering to dance steps of a more "low down" version of the Charleston. I added the audio from a simulatneous digital recording on my laptop. This is one of my favorite Jimmy Blythe rolls and I hope you enjoy!

The Battle of Blythe chronicles the events of April 6, 1972, as told by Demesia Figueroa, when students in the Blythe public school system walked out over mistreatment of indigenous youth. These events led to the creation of Escuela de la Raza Unida, the first private Chicano/Indigenous school in the nation, with support from Cesar Chavez, the United Farm Workers, and the community of Blythe. Created for the 40th anniversary of Escuela de la Raza Unida, April 6, 2012. The film makers wish to retransfer and archive historic footage contained in the film and beyond, of the strikes, the involvement of Cesar Chavez, and MAPA founder Bert Corona.
