Algernon Charles Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne (5 April 1837 – 10 April 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He wrote several novels and collections of poetry such as Poems and Ballads, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. A controversial figure at the time, Swinburne was a sado-masochist and alcoholic, and was obsessed with the Middle Ages and lesbianism.
Swinburne wrote about many taboo topics, such as lesbianism, cannibalism, sado-masochism, and anti-theism. His poems have many common motifs, such as the Ocean, Time, and Death. Several historical people are featured in his poems, such as Sappho ("Sapphics"), Anactoria ("Anactoria"), Jesus ("Hymn to Proserpine": Galilaee, La. "Galilean") and Catullus ("To Catullus").
Biography
Swinburne was born at 7 Chester Street, Grosvenor Place, London, on 5 April 1837. He was the eldest of six children born to Captain (later Admiral) Charles Henry Swinburne (1797–1877) and Lady Jane Henrietta, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Ashburnham. He grew up at East Dene in Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight.

Swinburne University of Technology
Swinburne University of Technology (often simply called Swinburne) is an Australian public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. Its main campus is located in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne which is located 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.
Swinburne runs five campuses; in total, Swinburne has 60,000 students.
In addition to its main Hawthorn campus, Swinburne has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area at Wantirna and Croydon. Swinburne also has a campus in Sarawak, Malaysia.
History
Swinburne University of Technology has its origins in the Eastern Suburbs Technical College, which was established in 1908 in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn by the Honourable George Swinburne. In 1913, the institution changed its name to Swinburne Technical College. The Institute attained university status on 1 July 1992 following the passage of the Swinburne University of Technology Act 1992.
As a consequence of the Dawkins reforms to Australian higher education in the early 1990s, the university commenced delivery in the suburb of Prahran through a merger in 1992 with Victoria College (previously the Prahran Institute of TAFE), which stood on the site of Victoria's first training institutes, the Prahran Mechanics' Institute.

Richard Swinburne
Richard G. Swinburne (/ˈswɪnbərn/; born 26 December 1934) is a British philosopher. He is an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. Over the last 50 years Swinburne has been an influential proponent of philosophical arguments for the existence of God. His philosophical contributions are primarily in the philosophy of religion and philosophy of science. He aroused much discussion with his early work in the philosophy of religion, a trilogy of books consisting of The Coherence of Theism, The Existence of God, and Faith and Reason.
Academic career
Swinburne received an Open Scholarship to study classics at Exeter College, Oxford, but in fact graduated with a first class BA in philosophy, politics, & economics. Swinburne has held various professorships through his career in academia. From 1972 to 1985 he taught at Keele University. During part of this time, he gave the Gifford lectures at Aberdeen from 1982 to 1984, resulting in the book The Evolution of the Soul. From 1985 until his retirement in 2002 he was Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at the University of Oxford (his successor in this chair is Brian Leftow). He has continued to publish regularly since his retirement.

This is a mirror which allows discussion. You may think my own questions are biased, but give them a read if you want - they are simply follow-up questions taking Richard's answers at face value. (And by all means ask your own questions of the professor in comments!) I would have liked to ask: 0:11 Problem of Evil - Would the absence of a God also allow evil, does it also let good things happen to evil people, and do you think a folded arms God like yours is identical to the absence of a God? - Playing with the thought that there is no God, would we still be responsible for each other? - Did God create our immune defense, and cancer, and too little Scientific knowledge to beat this unbeatable, shape-shifting disease to let enough people die until Science finds the cure, regardless of what good or evil acts they commit - including children who die of cancer? 1:05 God is hidden - Would you say that are a believer at all, if you don't know in your heart that he's watching you? - Would you say that once you are a believer, the threat of eternal torture gives you zero choice in choosing good over evil, unless you're a masochist? - Would it not be a better world, if everyone was naturally good from actually *knowing* they'd be rewarded? Isn't God the tempter by making us capable of sin and then stay hidden? (Rhetorical) - Gods of other religions are also hidden. Would you argue that they also exist, and if not, why the hell not? - The roughly 2000 year period of zero major revelations is not proclaimed in holy scripture (and it's not due to committee summary dismissal of gospels). Maybe they have semi-souls, like,um, Lucy? - Would you say the argument "God is a spirit because we feel we have a spirit" is a strict argument or a non sequitur? 4:15 Violence in the Universe - The Chelyabinsk meteor injured 1500 people, and you call bodies in space colliding a beautiful thing. I'm assuming then that you take it as absolute truth that there is zero conscious life outside the Earth. Because in the center of our galaxy, solar systems are getting all the life on them that has not yet been burned to a crisp shredded to pieces with their suns, as we speak. Are you incapable of understanding this, or do you consider them soul-less because God hasn't bothered to show up in one of their deserts? 5:21 Waste of space - I understand your claim that everything outside Earth orbit is just an inanimate display of astrophysics, a passive painting made for us to just look at and enjoy, and thereby the claim there is only purpose for Earth and no purpose at all for the 100 billion galaxies, because they are not important. I would however like to ask you whether you have checked yourself for mental illness lately, or perhaps missed taking a prescripted psychofarmacological drug that you need, in saying this? - I understand that you refer to the astrological belief when you say "The spheres that carried the planets around the Earth". Robert Kuhn interviews Richard Swinburne, Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at Oxford, who here has a try at the basic arguments for Atheism. I would have liked to ask:
0:11 Problem of Evil
- Would the absence of a God also allow evil, does it also let good things happen to evil people, and do you think a folded arms God like yours is identical to the absence of a God?
- Playing with the thought that there is no God, would we still be responsible for each other?
- Did God create our immune defense, and cancer, and too little Scientific knowledge to beat this unbeatable, shape-shifting disease to let enough people die until Science finds the cure, regardless of what good or evil acts they commit - including children who die of cancer?
1:05 God is hidden
- Would you say that are a believer at all, if you don't know in your heart that he's watching you?
- Would you say that once you are a believer, the threat of eternal torture gives you zero choice in choosing good over evil, unless you're a masochist?
- Would it not be a better world, if everyone was naturally good from actually *knowing* they'd be rewarded? Isn't God the tempter by making us capable of sin and then stay hidden? (Rhetorical)
- Gods of other religions are also hidden. Would you argue that they also exist, and if not, why the hell not?
- The roughly 2000 year period of zero major revelations is not proclaimed in holy scripture (and it's not due to committee summary dismissal of gospels). Would you say this is characteristic of ancient holy scriptures of various religions?
2:23 Disembodied minds and shit
- Yes, impossible thought experiments are easy to fantasize, Scifi authors have contributed their share. How long do you think this body with the empty skull would survive before receiving its half a brain?
- We have no motoric skills and certainly no personality when we are born. Who we are develop within our brains as we live our life. At exactly which moment does our soul get "lifted" from the body, and why is this also undetectable, like your God?
- As an equal thought experiment to yours, let's say a God-authorized tsunami killed the infant Hitler before he got his ideas. Surely he would be just as bad a person despite being unable to commit atrocities, because he has the same eternal soul. Would God accept his soul into heaven, and why, if it's the same eternal soul?
- Humans have brains. Dogs, primates, dolphins, and parrots can count, memorize words and concepts, and communicate with humans. You say humans have souls. If you say humans have souls and "animals" do not, why? Maybe they have semi-souls, like,um, Lucy?
- Would you say the argument "God is a spirit because we feel we have a spirit" is a strict argument or a non sequitur?
4:15 Violence in the Universe
- The Chelyabinsk meteor injured 1500 people, and you call bodies in space colliding a beautiful thing. I'm assuming then that you take it as absolute truth that there is zero conscious life outside the Earth. Because in the center of our galaxy, solar systems are getting all the life on them that has not yet been burned to a crisp shredded to pieces with their suns, as we speak. Are you incapable of understanding this, or do you consider them soul-less because God hasn't bothered to show up in one of their deserts?
5:21 Waste of space
- I understand your claim that everything outside Earth orbit is just an inanimate display of astrophysics, a passive painting made for us to just look at and enjoy, and thereby the claim there is only purpose for Earth and no purpose at all for the 100 billion galaxies, because they are not important. I would however like to ask you whether you have checked yourself for mental illness lately, or perhaps missed taking a prescripted psychofarmacological drug that you need, in saying this?
- I understand that you refer to the astrological belief when you say "The spheres that carried the planets around the Earth". I would like to ask you if you feel it's relevant to bring this falsity to the fore when asked a question about the Universe?

Aestheticism (also the Aesthetic Movement) is an intellectual and art movement supporting the emphasis of aesthetic values more than social-political themes for literature, fine art, music and other arts. This meant that Art from this particular movement focused more on being beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning - 'Art for Art's sake'. It was particularly prominent in Europe during the 19th century, supported by notable figures such as Oscar Wilde, but contemporary critics are also associated with the movement, such as Harold Bloom, who has recently argued against projecting social and political ideology onto literary works, which he believes has been a growing problem in humanities departments over the last century.
In the 19th century, it was related to other movements such as symbolism or decadence represented in France, or decadentismo represented in Italy, and may be considered the British version of the same style.
The British decadent writers were much influenced by the Oxford professor Walter Pater and his essays published during 1867–68, in which he stated that life had to be lived intensely, with an ideal of beauty. His text Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873) was very well regarded by art-oriented young men of the late 19th century. Writers of the Decadent movement used the slogan "Art for Art's Sake" (L'art pour l'art), the origin of which is debated. Some claim that it was invented by the philosopher Victor Cousin, although Angela Leighton in the publication On Form: Poetry, Aestheticism and the Legacy of a Word (2007) notes that the phrase was used by Benjamin Constant as early as 1804. It is generally accepted to have been promoted by Théophile Gautier in France, who interpreted the phrase to suggest that there was not any real association between art and morality.
The artists and writers of Aesthetic style tended to profess that the Arts should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages. As a consequence, they did not accept John Ruskin, Matthew Arnold, and George MacDonald's conception of art as something moral or useful, "Art for truth's sake". Instead, they believed that Art did not have any didactic purpose; it only needed to be beautiful. The Aesthetes developed a cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor of art. Life should copy Art, they asserted. They considered nature as crude and lacking in design when compared to art. The main characteristics of the style were: suggestion rather than statement, sensuality, great use of symbols, and synaesthetic/ Ideasthetic effects—that is, correspondence between words, colours and music. Music was used to establish mood.
Predecessors of the Aesthetics included John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, and some of the Pre-Raphaelites. In Britain the best representatives were Oscar Wilde and Algernon Charles Swinburne, both influenced by the French Symbolists, and James McNeill Whistler and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The style and these poets were satirised by Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera Patience and other works, such as F. C. Burnand's drama The Colonel, and in comic magazines such as Punch.
Compton Mackenzie's novel Sinister Street makes use of the type as a phase through which the protagonist passes as he is influenced by older, decadent individuals. The novels of Evelyn Waugh, who was a young participant of aesthete society at Oxford, describe the aesthetes mostly satirically, but also as a former participant. Some names associated with this assemblage are Robert Byron, Evelyn Waugh, Harold Acton, Nancy Mitford, A.E. Housman and Anthony Powell.
Artists associated with the Aesthetic style include James McNeill Whistler, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Aubrey Beardsley. One of the most neglected American writers and also one of the best loved, novelist Nelson Algren wrote about the dark underbelly of post-war America before it was ever fashionable to do so. He wrote about Chicago, his Chicago, the city, the corruption, the crime and the characters lost among its neon wilderness.
Best known for the novel The Man with the Golden Arm, which later became a film starring Frank Sinatra, Algren was a bard of the down-and-outer, boldly depicting the life of the city’s drunks, pimps, prostitutes, drug addicts, corrupt politicians, hoodlums and prize fighters.
But despite his incredible body of work, much of Algren’s writing has yet to be discovered by new generations. On what would have been his 100th birthday, a group of writers and actors gathered at Chicago's acclaimed Steppenwolf Theater to premiere… Nelson Algren Live—a celebration of Algren’s life and work in his own words.
This dramatic staged reading stars Willem Dafoe as down-and-out card dealer Frankie Machine from The Man with the Golden Arm and punchdrunk prizefighter Blackie Cavanaugh, from "The Lightless Room” which is presented here as the first public reading of Algren’s newly discovered short story masterpiece.
This film combines these masterful performances with the gritty period photography of Art Shay to illuminate Algren’s dark yet compassionate stories like never before.

He is best known as an early advocate of utilitarianism and animal rights who influenced the development of liberalism.
The essay Offences Against One's Self (c. 1785), argued for the liberalisation of laws prohibiting homosexuality. The essay remained unpublished during Bentham's lifetime for fear of offending public morality. It was finally published for the first time in 1931. (Wikipedia)
This recording was catalogued on 28th July 2007, the 40th anniversary of the coming into force in the UK of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which decriminalised male homosexuality for the first time (though with restrictions).

Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) Born into a prosperous Jewish family, Solomon followed his brother, Abraham (1823-1862), and sister, Rebecca (1832-1886), in pursuing a career as an artist. He trained in his brother's studio, at F. S. Cary's Academy and at the Royal Academy Schools which he entered aged fifteen. Initially Solomon enjoyed success with his paintings and drawings of Old Testament subjects. Magazine editors commissioned illustrations of Jewish customs and rituals from him.Solomon became known as a Pre-Raphaelite through his friendships with Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898).
With several other artists in the Pre-Raphaelite circle he contributed to Dalziels' Bible Gallery, William Burges' (1827-1881) 'Great Bookcase' and decorative work for Morris Marshall Faulkner & Co. For examples of Solomon's work with Pre-Raphaelite characteristics in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery Collection see 'The Death of Sir Galahad' (c.1857) and 'Ruth, Naomi and the Child Obed' (1860). During the 1860s Solomon became friends with the poet, Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) and the Oxford scholar, Walter Pater (1839-1894), the first writers in England to promote 'art for art's sake'. The new Aesthetic ideas influenced Solomon's work as well as three trips which he made to Italy (1866, 1869, 1870) where he saw Renaissance painting. His range of subjects increased and included Christian and Classical themes. From the late 1860s many of Solomon's images are connected to his prose poem 'A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep' published in 1871.
In 1873 Solomon was arrested in a public lavatory in London with another man and charged with indecent exposure and 'attempting to commit sodomy'. He did not receive a jail sentence, but as news of the incident spread the artistic community distanced itself from him. Solomon's work was exhibited from time to time after the scandal, but not at the Royal Academy and the Dudley Gallery, London, where he had been a regular contributor. He continued to draw and paint, selling his work privately often in the form of photographic prints by Frederick Hollyer (1838-1933).
Growing poverty, an unwillingness to depend on the charity of family and friends, and an increasing dependence on alcohol led to Solomon spending his last years in a London workhouse. The drawings of Solomon's final years focus on human faces and share some of the preoccupations of the Continental Symbolists. After over thirty years as a virtual outcast Solomon died of heart failure on 14 August 1905.
