Contemporary art is art produced at the present period in time. Contemporary art includes, and develops from, postmodern art, which is itself a successor to modern art. In vernacular English, "modern" and "contemporary" are synonyms, resulting in some conflation of the terms "modern art" and "contemporary art" by non-specialists.
Some define contemporary art as art produced within "our lifetime," recognizing that lifetimes and life spans vary. However, there is a recognition that this generic definition is subject to specialized limitations.
The classification of "contemporary art" as a special type of art, rather than a general adjectival phrase, goes back to the beginnings of Modernism in the English-speaking world. In London, the Contemporary Art Society was founded in 1910 by the critic Roger Fry and others, as a private society for buying works of art to place in public museums. A number of other institutions using the term were founded in the 1930s, such as in 1938 the Contemporary Art Society of Adelaide, Australia, and an increasing number after 1945. Many, like the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston changed their names from ones using "Modern art" in this period, as Modernism became defined as a historical art movement, and much "modern" art ceased to be "contemporary". The definition of what is contemporary is naturally always on the move, anchored in the present with a start date that moves forward, and the works the Contemporary Art Society bought in 1910 could no longer be described as contemporary.
The Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA) is a Ghanaian visual arts foundation that aims to create an active network of artists and provide a critical forum for the development of contemporary art in Ghana. Based in Accra, the FCA was founded in 2004 by Professor Joe Nkrumah and Australian/Italian artist Virginia Ryan, along with 12 founding members. The FCA office is located in the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture in the Cantonments neighborhood of Accra.
The Foundation for Contemporary Art currently has circa 100 members — artists, critics, collectors, art enthusiasts — as well as an advisory board and an executive board. The Foundation for Contemporary Art Ghana actively recruits new members and welcomes all practising artists and people interested in contemporary arts.
The objectives of the Foundation for Contemporary Art are fourfold:
Contemporary history describes the period timeframe that is closely connected to the present day; it is a certain perspective of modern history. The term "contemporary history" has been in use at least since the early 19th century. In the widest context of this use, contemporary history is that of current events and the part of history still in living memory. Based on current human lifespan-averages, contemporary history would extend for a period of approximately 80 years. In a narrower sense "contemporary history" may refer to the history remembered by most (more than 50 percent) of human beings alive, extending to about a generation. As the median age of people living on Earth is 30 years as of the present (2016) this is currently often understood as meaning anything after about 1991 when the Cold War order collapsed and use of the Internet became widespread outside of academia, defense and big business; the beginning of the "long 21st century".
The present age possesses a distinct character of its own.

The participants in this panel discussion, moderated by Kate Ezra, the Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs, examine South African contemporary art from multiple perspectives. Zanele Muholi is an artist whose photographs are included in the Gallery’s exhibition Contemporary Art/South Africa. Judy Hecker is Assistant Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Chika Okeke-Agulu, Associate Professor at Princeton University, is an artist, art historian, and curator specializing in African and African diasporic art history. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Contemporary Art/South Africa. Generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
In this lecture, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Wang Jianwei: Time Temple, Dr. Thomas J. Berghuis, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art, examines the development of contemporary art in China in the context of the global turn. He focuses on art produced after the turn of the 21st century, as China began positioning itself at the center of a new world order and as an origin from which to observe increasing globalization. The presentation examines the role of artists in China, such as Wang Jianwei, who consider new alternatives in addressing universal forms, and who strive for more pluralistic visions of culture and identity in their work. This lecture was presented as part of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Lecture Series.
The Past as Future in Japanese Contemporary Art http://www.japansociety.org/event/the-past-as-future-in-japanese-contemporary-art Thursday, November 6, 6:30 PM Drawing on his experience as a curator of exhibitions of traditional Japanese art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, John Carpenter will comment on the works of various contemporary artists, both Japan-born and Western, who incorporate images or concepts from premodern East Asian art. Sometimes, as in the work of Yamaguchi Akira and Hisashi Tenmyouya, the citation process is intentional and conspicuous though the artist’s motives are by no means reverential. References to the past in the dazzlingly complex drawings of Manabu Ikeda draw on a collectively shared set of imagery, such as Hokusai’s Great Wave, that for the artist see...

Guggenheim Museum The Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists By using dated, passé, or quasi-extinct stylistic devices, subject matter, and technologies, much contemporary photography and video embodies a melancholic longing for an otherwise irrrecuperable past. The "Haunted" exhibition documents this obsession, examining myriad ways photographic imagery is incorporated into recent practice, and, in the process, underscores the unique power of reproductive media. On the occasion of the exhibition, select artists featured in "Haunted" discuss the themes of their work. Curators introduce the programs and receptions, including an exhibition v...
