This video created by the Minnesota State High School League has been endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations for Ice Hockey. NFHS 2014-2015 rules for two infractions of the rules have been significantly increased in an effort to thwart players from making dangerous hits on the ice. NIHOA Officials have been instructed to use this video regarding body checking/contact as a guide for all games. Please note: The NFHS penalty for contact to the head has not changed and remains a minor or major or game disqualification. Only the Minnesota State High School League has increased penalties above NFHS standards. Checking from behind in open ice, which formerly called for a minor penalty plus a misconduct penalty, will now become a major penalty. The existing rule also states that any check from behind that is deemed "flagrant or causes the player to crash headfirst into the boards or goal frame" will continue be a major and misconduct or game disqualification. Boarding, defined as a "check, cross-check, elbow, charge or trip" that sends an opponent "violently into the boards" now becomes an automatic major penalty instead of the option of either a minor penalty or a major penalty. The existing rule also states that any boarding check that "causes the player to crash headfirst into the boards" will continue be a major and misconduct or game disqualification. NFHS Ice Hockey Rules Changes – 2014 - 2015 6-4-1 ART 1 Boarding...No player shall check, cross-check, elbow, charge or trip an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently into the boards. PENALTY: MAJOR MINOR. 6-4-2 ART 2 Boarding...If flagrant or the check causes the player to crash headfirst into the boards, either a MAJOR and MISCONDUCT or GAME DISQUALIFICATION penalty must be assessed. 6-7-1 ART 1 Checking From Behind...No player shall push, charge, cross-check or body-check an opponent from behind in open ice. PENALTY: MAJOR OTHER ICE HOCKEY RULES CHANGES: 3-4-4 Description of a proper tooth and mouth protector language was updated. 4-10-2 Emphasized that all penalties, served or not, shall be recorded on the score sheet 5-2-2 Officials shall wear all required equipment for both the warm-up and the game. 5-3-1b Officials are responsible for having access to a NFHS Rules Book during games.
