In music, harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. Harmony is often said to refer to the "vertical" aspect of music, as distinguished from melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect.Counterpoint, which refers to the interweaving of melodic lines, and polyphony, which refers to the relationship of separate independent voices, are thus sometimes distinguished from harmony.
In popular and jazz harmony, chords are named by their root plus various terms and characters indicating their qualities. In many types of music, notably baroque, romantic, modern, and jazz, chords are often augmented with "tensions". A tension is an additional chord member that creates a relatively dissonant interval in relation to the bass. Typically, in the classical common practice period a dissonant chord (chord with tension) "resolves" to a consonant chord. Harmonization usually sounds pleasant to the ear when there is a balance between the consonant and dissonant sounds. In simple words, that occurs when there is a balance between "tense" and "relaxed" moments.
Kenny Werner (born November 19, 1951) is an American jazz pianist and composer.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1951 and then growing up in Oceanside, New York, Werner began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio and improvisation was his true calling. In high school and his first years of college he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major.
His aptitude for improvisation led him to the Berklee School of Music in 1970, where he met and studied with his first piano/spiritual teacher, Madame Chaloff.
From Boston, Werner traveled to Brazil with the saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil. There he met Assis' twin brother, Brazilian pianist Joao Assis Brasil. His studies with Joao and Madame Chaloff would lead to the writing of the book Effortless Mastery.
Werner started his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. The Kenny Werner Trio matured for fourteen years, touring in America and Europe and recording four albums along the way.

In my last Jazz Piano Harmony tutorial I've covered diminished chords. Now it's time for augmented chords to make an appearance! Augmented chords make for great transitions, and they're also great for chord substitutions. They can yield quite distinct jazz, pop and soul harmonies, and can be used to enrich any jazz piano harmonic chord progression. Check out the diminished chord tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xwny96CSLs An augmented chord is denoted using either a + or 'aug' following the chord's name. For example, C+ means "C augmented", and Gaug means "G augmented". We will learn how to construct an augmented chord, which consists of the root and 2 additional notes spaced 4 semitones apart from each other. For example: C+ = C E G# F+ = F A C# An augmented chor...

Here are a couple of examples of early Harmony guitars from 1939 and 1937. They are harder to find than the ones made in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and despite being essentially the same guitar, they are nicer instruments. Also, I show an earlier Oscar Schmidt "Galiano" which I am restoring. These were sold by Oscar Schmidt, and essentially they are the same as the Stellas of the same period. These are much more desirable than the Harmony guitars. From my own experience, these early Harmony Stellas are just that bit nicer than the later ones...they are more lightly made and have a more open, 'woody' sort of sound. If you need any advice about buying Harmony Stellas or having them repaired...don't hesitate to contact me.

The diatonic scales explained. After introducing Chrominicism in the first and second clips, this third clip in the "Harmony Basics" series, explains the origin and structure of diatonic scales, while also demonstrating how scales are really permutations of the natural string of fifths, that semi-tones in diatonic scales result from Chrominicism, and that Chrominicism is a fundamental music and harmony component. This also explains why diatonic scales are not uniform, why they have 5 tones and 2 semi-tones, why all steps are not equal, why are there missing black keys on the piano keyboard, as well as why keys and staff follow the string of fifths. If scales are not fundamental components but only accessory permutations, what are the foundations of music and harmony? This clip addresses...
If enough people want sheet music, I might be compelled to make them. Anyway for my next Undertale track, I chose to arrange one of the more emotional pieces in the game. Even though I am a pianist, I am very cautious about using the piano in orchestrations because it can sound very cliche. The majority of piano arrangements I hear are simply the right hand playing the melody and the left hand doing either chords or arpeggios of the chords. Satisfying enough for the layman, but drives me crazy listening to them, and I'm guilty of doing that too. It takes a lot of work to make an arrangement that's dynamic and fun to play. The original track consists of a piano playing solo, and then joined by instrumentals for the second half. The latter half is extremely repetitive: I counted a total of ...

Kip Jones: Three Views of a Mountain -- Concerto for Violin, Double Bass, and String Orchestra Notes by the composer & violinist, Kip Jones: "Three Views of a Mountain is a concerto in three movements, arranged fast-slow-fast, that highlights the common ground between the two most disparate members of the string instrument family. It opens with the soloists, together as a speeding train, dodging large blocks of harmony from the orchestra. The entire first movement is a study of permutations, twisting and manipulating its stark themes in an overt and simple way. For me, it is childlike anticipation. The second movement is based on a twenty-two beat clave, ticking away silently in the musicians' minds underneath a folk song, played against its own skeleton; the effect is a many- layered, un...
