Würzburg (German pronunciation: [ˈvʏɐ̯tsbʊɐ̯k]; Main-Franconian: Wörtzburch) is a city in the region of Franconia, Northern Bavaria, Germany. Located on the Main River, it is the capital of the Regierungsbezirk of Lower Franconia. The regional dialect is Franconian.
Würzburg lies about equi-distant from Frankfurt am Main and from Nuremberg (each about 120 kilometers or 75 miles away). Although the city of Würzburg is not part of the Landkreis Würzburg, (i.e. the county or district of Würzburg), it is the seat of the district's administration. The city had a population of 124,698 as of 31 December 2013.
A Bronze Age (Urnfield culture) refuge castle stood on the site of the present Fortress Marienberg. The former Celtic territory was settled by the Alamanni in the 4th or 5th century, and by the Franks in the 6th to 7th. Würzburg was the seat of a Merovingian duke from about 650. It was Christianized in 686 by Irish missionaries Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan. The city is mentioned in a donation by Duke Hedan II to bishop Willibrord, dated 1 May 704, in castellum Virteburch. The Ravenna Cosmography lists the city as Uburzis at about the same time. The name is presumably of Celtic origin, but based on a folk etymological connection to the German word Würze "herb, spice", the name was Latinized as Herbipolis in the medieval period.
The city of Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, is the capital of Lower Franconia and has a history extending at least as far back as 704 BC. And there is no hiding the fact that religion has always been very important. I visited the historic city of Würzburg (stopping on the way at Veitshöchheim for ice-cream) to admire the old fortress and the gall of modern architects. The city is testament to the wealth and political power of the Church in times gone by; for centuries Würzburg was ruled by a Prince-Bishop, and this period has left its indelible mark. Incidentally, after WWII, the plan was to leave Würzburg desolate, a huge "ghost city" as a reminder of the war. This plan was rejected, and the city rebuilt.

IMMER! Würzburg makes a delightful destination for a day or two - - not just the few hours recommended by tour guides. While much of the town has been re-built since the destruction of WWII, the beauty and general character of the city have been retained. The Würzburg Residenz (palace) has been authentically re-constructed. The Marienberg Fortress retains it's regal position. (A fortress has been here since the bronze age!) Now the fortress, in addition to being a fascinating castle, is home to an excellent collection of Franconian art. Sadly, a buildings have modernized or only semi-restored, but the town is vital, fun, and filled with architectural and artistic wonders.

Take a tour of Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. On a hill surveying the German town of Wurzburg below is the magnificent Marienberg Fortress. The most ancient construction within the stronghold is the eighth-century church around which it was built. The fortress itself was begun in the thirteenth century and the main section was completed in 1482. It was the site of a short siege of the German Peasants' War in 1525. However, its strategic position on the inclining slope and thick outer walls were too strong and the attacking force was soon defeated. Today, Marienberg Fortress is the impressive home to an art museum and a lovely public park.
