Tamar Gendler, Department of Philosophy Chair at Yale University, Cognitive Scientist Who gets what and who says so? These two questions underlie and inform every social arrangement from the resolution of schoolyard squabbles to the meta-structure of human societies. They are also the basis of political philosophy. Professor Tamar Gendler uses the work of three titans of the discipline, Thomas Hobbes, John Rawls, and Robert Nozick, as a lens to guide us through the taut debate about the role of government in society, asking "Will we embrace the radical state of nature or will we surrender our freedom to the leviathan of the state?" Class of 2017 Keynote address by Tamar Gendler, Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, Chair of Philosophy, Professor of Psychology, Humanities, and Cognitive Science.
Tamar Gendler, Professor of Philosophy, Yale University Abstract: In some cases, moral behavior seem to be fully commendable (only) when the subject performs it wholeheartedly, without conflict between or among counter- or pro-moral beliefs and counter- or pro-moral aliefs. But in others, (perhaps those where moral demands at different levels pull in different directions) moral behavior seems to be fully commendable (only) when the subject experiences a conflict between pro-moral beliefs and pro-moral aliefs where the latter -- generally pro-social -- response is morally overridden in this (exceptional) circumstance. In still others, moral behavior seems to be fully commendable when it occurs as a result of the agent's overcoming certain counter-moral aliefs or beliefs. What sorts o...

Daniel Dennett and Tamar Gendler discuss Dan's new book "Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking", as well as related issues regarding the nature of thought, argumentation, and thought experiments. They spend much time discussing thought experiments, especially Frank Jackson's famous knowledge argument (also called Mary's Room), which is a famous argument in philosophy involving a color deprived scientist named Mary that challenges reductive materialism/physicalism. This talk is from Bloggingheads TV.
Philosophy and the Science of Human Nature (PHIL 181) Professor Gendler opens with a final criticism of Utilitarianism from Bernard Williams: in some cases, a good person should feel reluctant to do an act which brings about the greatest happiness, even if it is the right thing to do. The second half of the lecture introduces Kant's deontological moral theory. In contrast to consequentialism, deontology holds that it's not the outcome of actions that matter for their moral valence, but rather the will of the agent performing such actions. The outlines of Kant's deontological theory are presented, to be continued in the next lecture. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Bernard Williams's Objection to Utilitarianism 21:17 - Chapter 2.
