Negativland is an American experimental music band which originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s. They took their name from a Neu! track, while their record label (Seeland Records) is named after another Neu! track. The current core of the band consists of Mark Hosler, Richard Lyons, David Wills, aka The Weatherman and Peter Conheim.
Negativland has released a number of albums ranging from pure sound collage to more musical expositions. These have mostly been released on their own label, Seeland Records. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they produced several recordings for SST Records, most notably Escape from Noise, Helter Stupid, and U2. Negativland were sued by the band U2's record label, Island Records, and by SST Records, which brought them widespread publicity and notoriety.
Negativland started in Concord, California, in 1979 around the core founding members of Lyons and Hosler (who were in high school at the time), and released an eponymous debut in 1980.
A time zone is a region that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.
Most of the time zones on land are offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by a whole number of hours (UTC−12 to UTC+14), but a few are offset by 30 or 45 minutes (for example Newfoundland Standard Time is UTC−03:30, Nepal Standard Time is UTC+05:45, and Indian Standard Time is UTC+05:30). Some higher latitude countries use daylight saving time for part of the year, typically by changing clocks by an hour. Many land time zones are skewed toward the west of the corresponding nautical time zones. This also creates a permanent daylight saving time effect.
Before clocks were first invented, it was common practice to mark the time of day with apparent solar time (also called "true" solar time) – for example, the time on a sundial – which was typically different for every settlement.
No Other is the fourth solo studio album by Gene Clark. On release in late 1974 it was a critical and commercial failure; the studio time and cost were seen as excessive and indulgent. The record label, Asylum Records, did not promote the album, and by 1976 had deleted it from their catalog. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album. Just after Clark's death in 1991, "No Other" was reissued in its entirety on CD. In 1998, a double disc compilation, Flying High, was released with three songs from No Other. Then in the early 2000s, No Other was reissued a second time in its entirety to positive critical reappraisal.
In late 1972, Clark was invited to join a reunion of the original Byrds line-up on Asylum Records. The resulting album was a showcase for Clark, who sang on two Neil Young covers and two original songs. By the strength of his contributions to the album, Clark was signed to Asylum as a solo artist by David Geffen.
While preparing to record, Clark briefly joined the backing group of former Byrds colleague Roger McGuinn; the two even shared a home together during the period in the Hollywood Hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. During an engagement at The Troubadour in Los Angeles with McGuinn, he introduced a song that would remain in his repertoire for the rest of his career, "Silver Raven"; it would be recorded in an arrangement featuring Jesse Ed Davis and L.A. session player Danny Kortchmar on No Other. Of the song's composition, Clark said in a 1976 interview:

"No Other Possibility, their first video work, showcases the band at a career threshold, before their U2ploitation move and just after their Christianity hoax. It typically explores the debris of American pop culture, dealing with automobile fetishism, televised preaching, halloween traditions, Marlboro masculinity, soft drinks and MTV. Featuring such iconic culture-jam figures as Reverend Dick, The Weatherman, Dick Vaughn or Crosley Bendix, it expands on the visionary concept of Universal Media Netweb and seamlessly jams live footage, TV excerpts, street interviews and home-recorded theatrical performances in a zapping collage that could well have inspired EBN's ZooTV show. In the midst of their famous U2 controversy (and fallout with SST), Negativland went on tour to help recoup some of the losses and legal costs. They were kind enough to let me shoot their show. Shot by Terry Harrison on Hi8 (Canon L1) w. PCM audio.

A whole lotta boopers prodded and coaxed by Negativland and culminating in "Yellow Black and Rectangular" -- Warning: contains fetishistic closeups of homemade electronics, lurid shots of knobs being turned, and men in matching shirts. This was their "Encore".
This is a live performance from Negativland's True/False Tour 2000. A Loop Which Goes On Forever. (This statement is false.)
Parte l'azione legale dagli ...

This is episode 48 of my Don-O's Hour of Crap podcast For those who haven't been paying attention, those crazy cut-ups in Negativland have been making some noise lately….well, outside of three members dying off within the last year and a half. The group has just released a new album called The Chopping Channel, which is the latest in their Over The Edge Highlights series. There has been a few of these ‘Chopping’ shows over the years serving as umbrella for improvised collaborations with many artists visiting the show and the new album contains fragments of two more recent ones. The Chopping Channel is also the group’s Firesign Theatre-inspired satire of the 24 hour shopping channels and their practices. However, for this podcast, we’re chopping up a 2001 ‘Chopping’ show that features t...
It's the big messy Synchronize season finale! Mark Hosler of Negativland asks the last question at the Radio8Ball show hosted by Andy Shmushkin with Peter David Connelly of The Mona Reels. Alan Abbadessa-Green pays tribute to Negativland with a ton of audio/video collage. Plus, a segment from Ezra Sandzer-Bell and a Negativland-themed Sync Film from Will Morgan.
Shot at Creative Electric studios after the opening of the Negativlandland exhibition. A cut-down version of this aired on Drinking with Ian. The full episode will probably be available at youtube.com/dwi before too long. Best part about this interview: I say hardly 20 words.
"Circuit" was a short-lived series of DVDs about current bands with music and other features . This clip from "Circuit 7" from 2000 shows an interview with Mark Hosler and Don Joyce of Negativland, as well as some concert footage from their "True/False" tour.

This is part 1 of the conference I uploaded previously. Part 3 will soon follow
Mark starts out talking about how they get their inspiration which then develops into him talking about how they got the material for the U2 EP. He then starts talking about all the trouble they got into and for what reasons and talks about how he tracked down the store that the record was purchased, Athens, GA. This is where it starts to get very interesting because he makes the connection that the only thing in Athens connected to U2 was REM and (surprise, surprise) REM's manager is attending the conference. They both resolve that the resulting lawsuit started with U2, not Island Records as U2 has attempted to suggest in the past. This is from a conference at Duke Law called "Framed!" and is supposed to be under Creative Commons License. If you represent Duke Law and there are issues ...

In 1991, Negativland released this Special Radio Edit which featured extensive samples of the U2 song 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' as well as samples from a profane lapse in professionalism by US Top 40 host Casey Kasem. The cover featured "U2" in massive letters and a picture of a lockhead bomber. Island Records took immediate umbrage with it and insisted the cover and the title breached copyright laws, as did the song. Versions of the story conflict, as one would expect in a legal case worth close to $100,000 in damages that had the potential to destroy careers and livelihoods (and did - most of the band were left practically destitute). In June 1992, R. U. Sirius, publisher of Mondo 2000, was contacted by U2's publicists regarding the possibility of interviewing Dave "...
If I got shot
I bet the press would pick it up
You'd like me all a lot
If I got beat
When camera's rolled you'd see me lying bloody in the street
If a crazy stalker stabbed me or if down the stairs I fell
My room would fill with flowers,
And with cards to wish me well.
And I'd be your happy hero 'cause you'd heard my catchy song
And after being ripped apart, I could do no harm.
I know that I've done nothing that a coward wouldn't do
But even I might see things different, after listening to you
I'd be so hot, yeah,
For the sale-price of a press release
Success can still be bought
I'd sit so tall
They'd pluck me in a wheelchair and they'd push me down the hall
I'd play a song for dying kids, your eyes would start to tear
That would be the ticket, to bolster my career
And I'd be your happy hero and I'd sell another song
And after viewing my big heart, you'd have me going strong
I'd play a gentle lover in a movie for T.V.
So I deserve your pity, when my wife divorces me
If someone told, no,
Accused of fucking teen-aged boys and beating others cold
You'd side with me!
And enough of your would doubt it, which would likely set me free
You'd say I didn't do it and that anyone could tell,
'cause he's smooth and smart and pretty
And he reads his lines so well
And to be your happy hero
I'd just sing another verse
The more I sing,
The more you would relieve me from my curse
Release me from your consciousness
As I bring down the floor
Selling Pepsi from the stage,
You yell and scream for more
