Bernadette Soubirous (Bernadeta Sobirós en occitan), de son vrai nom Bernarde-Marie Soubirous (Maria Bernada Sobirós), née le 7 janvier 1844 à Lourdes, et décédée le 16 avril 1879 à Nevers, est une sainte catholique, célèbre pour avoir témoigné de 18 apparitions mariales à la grotte de Massabielle entre le 11 février et le 16 juillet 1858. Bernadette employait surtout le terme occitan « aquerò » (c'est-à-dire « cela »)1 pour désigner l'objet de sa vision2. Elle ne dira pas elle-même avoir vu la Vierge avant de l'avoir entendue dire « Que sòi era Immaculada Concepcion », c'est-à-dire, « Je suis l'Immaculée Conception »3. Au cours d'une de ces apparitions, Bernadette a creusé le sol pour y prendre de l'eau. L'eau de cette source est rapidement réputée être miraculeuse et il commence à être question de guérisons. S'en tenant à ce qu'elle avait vu et entendu, Bernadette niera avoir été témoin de guérisons ou y avoir contribué : « On m'a dit qu'il y avait eu des miracles, mais à ma connaissance, non4. », déclare-t-elle en septembre 1858.
Dans un contexte post-révolutionnaire de vives polémiques sur les questions religieuses et quelques années après les apparitions mariales de la rue du Bac et de la Salette, ces apparitions de Lourdes suscitent un engouement populaire important et croissant. La presse nationale commence à s'y intéresser durant l'été 1858, notamment avec la publication par Louis Veuillot d'un article très remarqué dans L'Univers5. Le préfet de Tarbes, suivant les consignes du ministère des cultes, maintient une interdiction d'accès à la grotte jusque octobre 1858, tandis qu'une commission d'enquête mise en place par l'évêque de Tarbes en juillet 1858 se prononce en faveur de ces apparitions en 1862. L'aménagement de la grotte et la construction d'une basilique sur le rocher qui la surplombe commencent alors.
En l'espace de quelques mois, Bernadette Soubirous, alors âgée de 14 ans, était devenue une célébrité internationale tandis que la vie dans cette bourgade des Pyrénées commençait à être transformée par l'affluence des pèlerins, des curieux et des journalistes. Entre 1858 et 1866, Bernadette continue de vivre à Lourdes où sa situation devient cependant de moins en moins tenable. Sans cesse sollicitée tout en refusant de percevoir quoi que ce soit en rapport aux apparitions ou à sa célébrité, elle se pose la question d'une vie religieuse. En 1864, suivant la recommandation de l'évêque de Nevers, elle se décide à entrer chez les sœurs de la Charité. Deux ans plus tard, alors que la construction de la basilique est en cours, Bernadette a 22 ans et quitte Lourdes pour entrer au couvent Saint-Gildard à Nevers. Elle y mène treize années d'une vie de « religieuse ordinaire » ayant néanmoins la particularité de recevoir la visite de nombres d'évêques parmi ceux qui souhaitent se faire une opinion sur elle et sur les apparitions. Souvent malade et de santé fragile, elle s'occupe de l'infirmerie quand elle n'y est pas elle-même soignée. Elle fait ses vœux perpétuels en 1878 puis elle meurt le 16 avril 1879 à l'âge de 35 ans.
En 1868, paraissait le livre de Henri Lasserre intitulé Notre-Dame de Lourdes6, qui connaît un grand succès et est traduit en 80 langues. En 1869, le pape Pie IX écrira une lettre à l'auteur pour l'en féliciter, reconnaissant ainsi implicitement ces apparitions7. À la fin du xixe siècle, la foule qui afflue à Lourdes intéresse nombre d'intellectuels8. Parmi eux, Émile Zola (Lourdes), Joris-Karl Huysmans (Les foules de Lourdes), François Mauriac (Les pèlerins de Lourdes) ou encore Paul Claudel9. L'ensemble des archives et des témoignages sur Bernadette Soubirous à fait l'objet d'un travail de recensement et d'édition critique par René Laurentin dans les années 1960-1970.
Bernadette Soubirous est béatifiée le 14 juin 1925, puis canonisée le 8 décembre 1933 par le pape Pie XI. Sa fête est célébrée le 16 avril. Le sanctuaire de Lourdes accueille environ 6 millions de personnes chaque année.

La vida de santa Bernardita es la historia de una niña pobre y sencilla. Tenía catorce años y parecía de doce. No estaba bien desarrollada físicamente. Tenía asma. No sabía leer, ni escribir, ni hablar en francés. Sólo hablaba la lengua de la región: el patois. Apenas sabía el padrenuestro, el avemaría y el credo; y no sabía el catecismo ni había hecho aún la primera comunión. Sin embargo, Dios la escogió para ser la mensajera de María y decirle al mundo que Ella era la Inmaculada, declarada así solemnemente por el Papa cuatro años antes.
La Virgen María se le apareció durante 18 veces desde el 11 de febrero al 16 de Julio de 1858. A partir de las apariciones, su vida cambió sustancialmente. Primero porque mucha gente quería verla y hablar con ella. Segundo porque ella quería ser religiosa. Fue recibida en el hospicio de Lourdes como alumna y después, en 1866, entró definitivamente como religiosa de las hermanas que regían el hospicio: Hermanas de la Caridad y de la Instrucción cristiana de Nevers.Como religiosa, se santificó con el cumplimiento diario de sus deberes religiosos y aceptando sus sufrimientos por la conversión de los pecadores. Padeció desde niña de asma y, más tarde, de un tumor canceroso en la rodilla. Nunca se quejaba y cumplía su misión en el silencio y la soledad de su cama en la enfermería, donde pasó mucho tiempo de su corta existencia.Su vida, oscura y escondida a primera vista, fue ante Dios la de un gigante de la santidad. Por ello, después de su muerte, Dios la glorificó, haciendo que su cuerpo apareciera incorrupto. Bernadette Fue santificada el 8 de diciembre de 1933, día de la Inmaculada Concepción.

Dans un contexte post-révolutionnaire de vives polémiques sur les questions religieuses et quelques années après les apparitions mariales de la rue du Bac et de la Salette, ces apparitions de Lourdes suscitent un engouement populaire important et croissant. La presse nationale commence à s'y intéresser durant l'été 1858, notamment avec la publication par Louis Veuillot d'un article très remarqué dans L'Univers5. Le préfet de Tarbes, suivant les consignes du ministère des cultes, maintient une interdiction d'accès à la grotte jusque octobre 1858, tandis qu'une commission d'enquête mise en place par l'évêque de Tarbes en juillet 1858 se prononce en faveur de ces apparitions en 1862. L'aménagement de la grotte et la construction d'une basilique sur le rocher qui la surplombe commencent alors.
En l'espace de quelques mois, Bernadette Soubirous, alors âgée de 14 ans, était devenue une célébrité internationale tandis que la vie dans cette bourgade des Pyrénées commençait à être transformée par l'affluence des pèlerins, des curieux et des journalistes. Entre 1858 et 1866, Bernadette continue de vivre à Lourdes où sa situation devient cependant de moins en moins tenable. Sans cesse sollicitée tout en refusant de percevoir quoi que ce soit en rapport aux apparitions ou à sa célébrité, elle se pose la question d'une vie religieuse. En 1864, suivant la recommandation de l'évêque de Nevers, elle se décide à entrer chez les sœurs de la Charité. Deux ans plus tard, alors que la construction de la basilique est en cours, Bernadette a 22 ans et quitte Lourdes pour entrer au couvent Saint-Gildard à Nevers. Elle y mène treize années d'une vie de « religieuse ordinaire » ayant néanmoins la particularité de recevoir la visite de nombres d'évêques parmi ceux qui souhaitent se faire une opinion sur elle et sur les apparitions. Bernadette Soubirous (Bernadeta Sobirós en occitan), de son vrai nom Bernarde-Marie Soubirous (Maria Bernada Sobirós), née le 7 janvier 1844 à Lourdes, et décédée le 16 avril 1879 à Nevers, est une sainte catholique, célèbre pour avoir témoigné de 18 apparitions mariales à la grotte de Massabielle entre le 11 février et le 16 juillet 1858. Bernadette employait surtout le terme occitan « aquerò » (c'est-à-dire « cela »)1 pour désigner l'objet de sa vision2. Elle ne dira pas elle-même avoir vu la Vierge avant de l'avoir entendue dire « Que sòi era Immaculada Concepcion », c'est-à-dire, « Je suis l'Immaculée Conception »3. Au cours d'une de ces apparitions, Bernadette a creusé le sol pour y prendre de l'eau. L'eau de cette source est rapidement réputée être miraculeuse et il commence à être question de guérisons. S'en tenant à ce qu'elle avait vu et entendu, Bernadette niera avoir été témoin de guérisons ou y avoir contribué : « On m'a dit qu'il y avait eu des miracles, mais à ma connaissance, non4. », déclare-t-elle en septembre 1858.
Dans un contexte post-révolutionnaire de vives polémiques sur les questions religieuses et quelques années après les apparitions mariales de la rue du Bac et de la Salette, ces apparitions de Lourdes suscitent un engouement populaire important et croissant. La presse nationale commence à s'y intéresser durant l'été 1858, notamment avec la publication par Louis Veuillot d'un article très remarqué dans L'Univers5. Le préfet de Tarbes, suivant les consignes du ministère des cultes, maintient une interdiction d'accès à la grotte jusque octobre 1858, tandis qu'une commission d'enquête mise en place par l'évêque de Tarbes en juillet 1858 se prononce en faveur de ces apparitions en 1862. L'aménagement de la grotte et la construction d'une basilique sur le rocher qui la surplombe commencent alors.
En l'espace de quelques mois, Bernadette Soubirous, alors âgée de 14 ans, était devenue une célébrité internationale tandis que la vie dans cette bourgade des Pyrénées commençait à être transformée par l'affluence des pèlerins, des curieux et des journalistes. Entre 1858 et 1866, Bernadette continue de vivre à Lourdes où sa situation devient cependant de moins en moins tenable. Sans cesse sollicitée tout en refusant de percevoir quoi que ce soit en rapport aux apparitions ou à sa célébrité, elle se pose la question d'une vie religieuse. En 1864, suivant la recommandation de l'évêque de Nevers, elle se décide à entrer chez les sœurs de la Charité. Deux ans plus tard, alors que la construction de la basilique est en cours, Bernadette a 22 ans et quitte Lourdes pour entrer au couvent Saint-Gildard à Nevers. Elle y mène treize années d'une vie de « religieuse ordinaire » ayant néanmoins la particularité de recevoir la visite de nombres d'évêques parmi ceux qui souhaitent se faire une opinion sur elle et sur les apparitions.
