Guatemala City, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala and Central America. It had a population of 1,075,000 as of 2009. It is also the capital city of the local Municipio de Guatemala, and Guatemala Department.
Guatemala officially the Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Its area is 108,890 km2 (42,043 mi2) with an estimated population of 13,276,517.A representative democracy, its capital is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City. Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot. The former Mayan civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization, which continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. They had lived in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, the southern part of Mexico and eastern parts of El Salvador.Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821. After independence it was ruled by a series of dictators, assisted by the United Fruit Company. From 1960 to 1996, Guatemala underwent a civil war fought between the government and leftist rebels. Following the war, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections. In the most recent election, held in 2011, Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Party won the presidency.
Guatemala lies between latitudes 13° and 18°N, and longitudes 88° and 93°W.
The country is mountainous with small desert and sand dune patches, hilly valleys, except for the south coastal area and the vast northern lowlands of Petén department. Two mountain chains enter Guatemala from west to east, dividing the country into three major regions: the highlands, where the mountains are located; the Pacific coast, south of the mountains; and the Petén region, north of the mountains. All major cities are located in the highlands and Pacific coast regions; by comparison, Petén is sparsely populated. These three regions vary in climate, elevation, and landscape, providing dramatic contrasts between hot, humid tropical lowlands and colder, drier highland peaks. Volcán Tajumulco, at 4,220 m, is the highest point in the Central American states.
The rivers are short and shallow in the Pacific drainage basin, larger and deeper in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico drainage basins, which include the Polochic and Dulce Rivers, which drain into Lake Izabal, the Motagua River, the Sarstún that forms the boundary with Belize, and the Usumacinta River, which forms the boundary between Petén and Chiapas, Mexico.
Guatemala has long claimed all or part of the territory of neighboring Belize, currently an independent Commonwealth Realm which recognises Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State. Due to this territorial dispute, Guatemala recognized Belize's independence until 1990, but the dispute is not resolved. Negotiations are currently underway under the auspices of the Organization of American States and the Commonwealth of Nations to conclude it.

Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala. It is located at around 15°41′20″N 88°36′45″WCoordinates: 15°41′20″N 88°36′45″W. It lies at Amatique Bay off the Gulf of Honduras and is administratively a part of Puerto Barrios.
Cruises To Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala
=========================
In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here.[5] Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.
Belgian colony
=============
In the 1840s Santo Tomás was settled by Belgians in a colonial enterprise after the European nation supported Rafael Carrera in his drive for independence of the country. Belgium supported Rafael Carrera as he led Guatemala to independence. The territory was authorized in 1843 "in perpetuity" by the Guatemalan parliament to be administered by the Compagnie belge de colonisation, a private Belgian company under the protection of King Leopold I of Belgium. It replaced the failed British Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company. Many of the Belgians who settled there died of yellow fever and malaria, which were endemic to the region. Most were buried in a Belgian cemetery near Matias de Gálvez, which still existed in the 1960s. In 1854 the Belgian company withdrew because of financial losses.

Campeche, officially Free and Sovereign State of Campeche, is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, that comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. Located in Southeast Mexico, it is bordered by the states of Tabasco to the south west, Yucatán to the north east, and Quintana Roo to the east, and to the southeast by the Orange Walk district of Belize, and the Petén department of Guatemala to the south. It has a coastline to the west with the Gulf of Mexico. The state capital, also called Campeche, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. The formation of the state began with the city, which was founded in 1540 as the Spanish began the conquest of the Yucatán Peninsula. During the colonial period, the city was a rich and important port, but declined after Mexico’s Independence. Campeche was part of the province of Yucatán but split off in the mid-19th century, mostly due to political friction with city of Mérida. Today, much of the state’s economic comeback is due to the finding of petroleum offshore in the 1970s, which has made the coastal cities of Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen important economic centers. The state has important Mayan and colonial sites but they are not as well known or visited as others in the Yucatán.

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (CNN) -- The death toll from a landslide in Guatemala grew to 33 people Monday afternoon, with up to 60 still missing, a rescue official said.
A landslide in the same area in northwest Guatemala killed two people December 14.
Six people were injured in Sunday's landslide, which blocked nearly one mile of road between Chicaman and San Cristobal Verapaz, said Hugo Arbizu, spokesman for the national disaster agency.
Don't Miss
* Four dead in Guatemala market shootout
The tragedy occurred when travelers got out of a truck Sunday and started to walk across a path below the part of the road blocked by the previous landslide, Arbizu told CNN. Around 11:30 a.m., more than 10 tons of dirt and rock fell on them.
After the previous landslide, geologists declared that stretch of road a high-risk area, and nearby residents reported hearing occasional rumblings. Any type of travel over that segment had been prohibited, Arbizu said.
Video footage on CNN affiliate Canal 7 TV showed rocks and dirt continuing to slide down a mountain after the disaster.
The search was called off at 6 p.m. Sunday because of concerns over more landslides, but it resumed at 6 a.m. Monday, Arbizu said.
Guatemalan Vice President Rafael Espada toured the site, accompanied by Alejandro Maldonado, head of the national agency for the reduction of disasters, and Health Minister Celso Cerezo.
Espalda said the government would help families with funeral costs, but it was difficult to identify some bodies because they were so badly mutilated, the Prensa Libre newspaper said.
Makeshift morgues were set up nearby, with the expectation that more bodies will be found, Cerezo said.
The first rescuers on the scene described the devastation, even as they watched for further slides.
"When we arrived, we found a dramatic scene with many people crying for family members buried when they tried to cross," Jorge Bol of the volunteer fire department in San Cristobal Verapaz told the newspaper.
Photos on the Prensa Libre Web site showed family members and others helping rescue crews carry victims out of the disaster area and bodies lined up behind an ambulance.

Follow Carlton Brown (www.carltonbrownV47.com), Gustav Otto Braarud (http://www.vulcanolodge.com), and Oyvind Søgaard as they ride by Motorbike to El Mirador. Deep in the Peten jungle, close to Guatemala’s north Mexican border, resides the world’s largest pyramid by volume – and we wanted to check that out! Carlton, author of “Sun God Sacred Secrets” (www.carltonbrownV47.com), continues his quest to visit many of the world’s ancient pyramids and religious structures. This hobby led to the discovery of ancient priesthood ritual processes for accessing our higher states of consciousness (see on Amazon http://tinyurl.com/phoj3hj). The ancient priesthoods of the Maya (and Egypt, Central & South America, India) used pyramid and temple art and icons to embed symbolic information encoding their ritual processes – and Carlton discovered this.
This trip was a blast!!! Guatemala never ceases to amaze us. She openly shares her treasures, expands our minds, and just at the right moment all the connections get made and adventures manifest. Sure we ask permission from the ancient Mayan ancestors, and connect to Mother Nature and all her life forms. If we’re lucky, the moment auspicious, we can use sacred rituals and connect with powerful forces beyond this world and words. Come see some of what we experienced at El Mirador; the beautiful sub-tropical rainforest, the wondrous El Mirador reclaimed by the jungle and shown in all her glory, motorbikes in the thick of it, howler monkeys visiting us under the moon light, and much more.
Starting in Carmelita, 75km along a gravel road north of Santa Elena (Flores), we found a guide from the El Mirador Cooperative who was willing to assist our adventure. We each took 20 litres of water for 5 days, 12 litres of petrol, food for hungry lads, and had these supplies transported by two mules (A guide plus 2 donkeys Q300 per day), first to El Tintal where we camped overnight, then on to El Mirador the following day (7am). Organising your own trip is much cheaper than buying a trip from Flores, and puts you in control of your adventure. There really weren’t a lot of maps or blogs from other riders available online beforehand for planning, nor much high-resolution satellite imagery, so we had to largely wing it! I watched some Bear Grylls outdoor survival YouTube videos beforehand. We had neither maps nor GPS, and simply followed our noses and bush instincts. Sure a manual compass, watching the sun’s trajectory and looking for signs on the path were all helpful. We travelled in late February, early March, during the dry season; you would not wish to do this by motorbike during the wet season!
From Carmelita we followed one of four track entrances to El Tintal – and we were shown the toughest one! Clay bogs for the first 8km, where you sink one foot deep and it sticks to the bike (we all used off road knobbly tires) and sucks you in!! My clutch burnt out, but Gustav and Oyvind made it all the way to El Mirador! Good on you guys ☺. We got some good Gopro and video footage en route too! I ended up walking, which turned out to be a really nice trip for me. Lots of connecting solitude in the jungle, and I saw a lot of beautiful animal and plant life, and emptied my head to witness moment upon moment in silence. All up it took me 11 hours of walking to get there (supposedly 43km), split over two days; and the motorcyclists quite a bit less!
We hired hammocks with mosquito nets from the guide (Q10 per day), but tents would also work. There are a lot of mosquitos around, so come prepared. The trail was safe, all the locals incredibly friendly and helpful (typical of Guatemala), and any fears we might have held before rapidly melted once we got underway. If you’re thinking of visiting El Mirador – do it! It’s still at the early academic phase of excavation, and most of the site is covered in jungle and the pyramids resemble jungle-covered hills.
We hope you enjoy this YouTube video, and thank you for watching it. Contact Carlton via www.carltonbrownV47.com, or reserve your stay at Vulcano Lodge; the award-winning hotel in Jaibalito, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, with Gustav at http://www.vulcanolodge.com.

The Q'eqchi' Maya of Belize have an extensive pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants used traditionally for reproductive health and fertility. Ethnobotanical research with six traditional healers, three midwives, and 12 female herbalists determined that the Belizean Q'eqchi' are using more than 60 plant species for reproductive health treatments. Ten species used to treat female infertility, male infertility, menopausal symptoms, heavy menstruation, uterine fibroids, Q'eqchi' womb disorder, miscarriage prevention, female contraception, and male contraception were selected for investigation of their estrogenic activity using a reporter gene assay. Nine of the species assayed showed estrogenic activity, four also showed antiestrogenic activity, and two of the extracts were cytotoxic to the breast cancer cell line used in the assay. Women's healing traditions are being lost in the Q'eqchi' communities of Belize at an accelerated rate due to a combination of factors including: migration disrupting familial lines of knowledge transmission, perceived disapproval by biomedical authorities, women's limited mobility due to domestic obligations, and lack of confidence stemming from the devaluation of women's traditional knowledge. Q'eqchi' medicinal plant knowledge is highly gendered with women and men commonly using different plant species. Revitalizing women's healing practices is vital for maintaining the traditional knowledge needed to provide comprehensive healthcare for Belize's most remote indigenous populations.

(EXPEDITION TO EL MIRADOR - SUBTITLES AVAILABLE - click on cc to activate closed caption)
