In this interview, both
Pierce Brosnan and his co-star
Trine Dyrholm expressed enthusiasm for movies that feature grown-up romances, and Brosnan talked openly about how his personal experiences informed his character. I'd love to read your thoughts—on these two actors, the film, and screen romances between grownups—in the comments section below.
Pierce Brosnan plays
Philip, a successful business man who's been emotionally shut off since the accidental death of his wife years earlier. That is, until Philip meets Ida (the
Danish actress Trine Dyrholm), the mother of the woman his son is about to marry. Philip shows an incredible tenderness toward Ida, who has recently lost a breast and all her hair to cancer treatment.
In real life, Brosnan's first wife,
Cassandra Harris, died
of ovarian cancer in 1991. "There's no question that this is a story that is cleaved from my own life and my own heart. I know what it's like to sit with a beautiful woman and say, '
Let's just cut the hair off.' I know what it's like to shave a head and watch the hair fall on the floor and then go, '
Wow, let's have a cup of tea.'" Wow is right! Not only is Brosnan easy on the eye, he's easy on the heart. And he's devoted and involved with the women in his life. For example, in two other interviews
I've done with him, Brosnan, often without prompting, brought up his second wife,
Keely Shaye Smith, a total of 24 times. And these weren't mere mentions, but sincere, deep compliments. For example: "Keely is a brilliant mother," Brosnan began. "I was certainly not looking for anyone at that time in my life, and then to find someone who really just captivates you, and you fall in love. She just opened my eyes to another part of my heart. And to see the mother that she has become to our children is just astoundingly beautiful."
He went on: "Keely is darn good photographer—the best photographer. And the camera loves her, too."
And said: "She is a fantastic gardener. From weed and sand, she has cultivated
Samoans,
Meyer lemons, gardenias, papaya and mango."
Later, he noted:
"My song to Keely when we got married was
Bruce Springsteen's '
If I Should Fall Behind,
Wait For Me.'"
He added: "Keely's an amazing cook!"
And, one more mention:
"She's a great environmentalist. She has a gift and a knowledge—a sincere, profound passion for the environment.
Long before anyone else, she was an eco-babe. She is a babe, man. She just walked 'round that corner when I met her, and I went, 'Oooooow-wee.'"
Guys like Brosnan are rarities. Keely Shaye Smith is one lucky lady.
