Palenque (Bàak' in Modern Maya) was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date back to 226 BC to its fall around 1123 AD. After its decline it was absorbed into the jungle, which is made up of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but has been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site attracting thousands of visitors. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located about 130 km (81 mi) south of Ciudad del Carmen (see map) about 150 m (164 yd) above sea-level. It stays at a humid 26°C (79°F) with roughly 2160 mm (85 in) of rain a year.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was Pacal the Great whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions.

In the midst of a dense rainforest on the foothills of the Usumacinta Mountains is Palenque, one of the most popular archaeological sites in Mexico. The monumental buildings of Palenque, such as the Temple Of The Cross, lay hidden in the rainforest for around 800 years until they were discovered in 1784. The monumental architectural character of this pyramid-like temple is typical of the ancient building style of the legendary Mayan people. In contrast to other Mayan towns in the central Mexican lowland, the buildings in Palenque are well built and decorated with bright stones. The colours of the surrounding rainforest are a picturesque setting for these splendid structures. In 1952 a Mexican archaeologist discovered a deep shaft that led him to an underground crypt that contained the stone sarcophagus of King Pacal. The face of the sovereign was covered with a jade mask and many other jade figures surrounded his body. Today, the beautiful carved lid of the sarcophagus is on public view in the crypt. Wide, raised steps lead to the most important construction area in Palenque, The Great Palace, that was built during the 7th and 8th centuries. The palace area was not just an embellishment as numerous living and bathing rooms attest to the fact that the daily life of the monarchy also took place here. Palenque is one of the most beautiful Mayan towns in Mexico. In 1994, after discovering another sarcophagus, excavations were extended over the entire area. We had to set off early for Palenque to avoid traffic jams caused by armed union activists who had blocked roads to demand "contributions" to their strike fund. En route we stopped at Aqua Azul and Cascadas de Miso-ha waterfalls. We swam and were able to walk behind the second waterfall. Our choice for the options available for the day was a visit to the archeological site at Pelenque where our guide gave us some more insights into the Mayan world. The Palenque site is unusual for the burial chamber under the pyramid of the inscription and the collection of interconnecting buildings called The Palace, the comb like constructions on the temple of the sun and the temple of the cross. It is also interesting to see where the jungle has grown back over other temples such as the Groupo Norte and the Complex of the Bats. We then travelled to Merida by bus. We opted for the trip to Acanceh with its pyramid beside the modern main square and then on to a ruined sisal hacienda Chunkanan. We viewed Merida's "Posh" district Paseo de Monjejo and watched some typical Yucatan music and dance. The following day we set off for Playa del Carmen via the huge Mayan site Chichen Itza with its central pyramid "El Castillo" and ball courts. We had a swim in the amazing Il Kil centoe before reaching Playa del Carmen with it's Caribbean night life for our final dinner.

One of the most successful of these cities was Palenque - which became the dominant center in its region. The setting here is incomparable

deep inside the majestic Temple of Inscriptions proving that this pyramid was a funerary monument with exactly the same function as the Egyptian pyramids. The man entombed here was surely one of Palenque's mightiest rulers
who ascended the throne when he was twelve years old
and lived to the age of 80. This entire city had been completely swallowed by the jungle when it was rediscovered by Americans John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1837.
Alberto Ruz spent his entire life here working to unravel Palenque's mysteries He was so dedicated to excavating this site that he chose to be buried here.
Today visitors pass by his tomb just inside the entrance gates.. His work has inspired generations of archaeologists to spend their lives searching for the secrets that lie locked in the past.
Today Mayan descendants still inhabit many parts of southern Mexico
and these proud people continue to struggle fiercely against losing all vestiges of their great culture.
