On Monday, July 8, The Center for Gender and Student Engagement (CGSE) and The Tucker Foundation welcomed sociologist and acclaimed author, Michael Kimmel to Dartmouth College as the 2013 CGSE Visionary in Residence.
Dr. Kimmel's public lecture entitled, Boys Will Be Boys: Deconstructing Masculinity and Manhood at Dartmouth, will discuss the tension and cost between traditional notions of masculinity and public performances of manhood, as well as positive alternatives to address these concerns.

In the world of gender studies, Michael Kimmel is what you might describe as an early adopter. He has spent much of the last forty years calling himself a feminist. But for a good deal of his career as an academic and writer, he has been thinking and exploring the behavior of men, and believes that feminism can be men’s salvation. In this talk, he explains why we need to rethink the way we educate our boys to prevent them from falling through the cracks.
Dr. Michael Kimmel is one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinities. He was called “the world’s most prominent male feminist” in The Guardian newspaper in London.
He is the SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University. Among his many books are Manhood in America, Angry White Men, The Politics of Manhood, The Gendered Society and the best seller Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men. With funding from the MacArthur Foundation, he founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook in 2013.

Are you man enough to be a feminist?
Renowned American sociologist, researcher on men and masculinity, author and self-proclaimed feminist, Michael Kimmel, together with his co-author, Michael Kaufmann, seek to find answers to this, for some, provocative question. Written tongue in cheek and entertainingly, Michael's short stories and instructions in "Guy's Guide to Feminism" -- garnished with jokes and comics -- illustrates why feminism not only brightens up the lives of women but is also beneficial to men. He clears up a number of male myths, e.g. that of man-hating feminists or that biology is the main cause of differences and inequality between men and women. In "Guy's Guide to Feminism", Michael Kimmel and his colleague, Michael Kaufman, seek to convince men that feminism is a worthy cause. Not only is sex better with feminists, but standing up for gender equality is equally life-enriching on so many other levels.
The final battle
Even though women are allowed to vote in many countries across the globe, attend university and open a bank account, the final gender battle is still far from being fought. That women in the USA only have three-quarters of the opportunities afforded to men in the working world, health, politics and education (World Economic Forum ranking) is unacceptable. In the words of the authors: "It really sucks".
Guidebook with entertainment value
Kimmel's and Kaufman's pro-feminist guidebook is a highly entertaining work garnished with short stories, jokes and comics. Catchwords such as jobs or emotions are dealt with alphabetically. Served up in easily digestible morsels, the book covers the various stages of the feminist struggle and provides data on the current state of gender equality and even on issues such as genital mutilation and honour killings. American sociologist Michael Kimmel is a professor at Stony Brook University in New York and editor of the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities. He is a long-time researcher on men and masculinity as well as gender relations. Michael will kick-off the event by giving a lecture covering the main elements of his book before joining a panel discussion to discuss his approach with guests from Berlin and the audience.

Michael Kimmel
Michael Scott Kimmel (born February 26, 1951) is an American sociologist specializing in gender studies. He holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the Stony Brook University in New York and is the founder and editor of the academic journal Men and Masculinities. Kimmel is a spokesperson of the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS) and a longtime feminist. In 2013, he founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University, where he is Executive Director.
Background
Kimmel earned a B.A. with distinction from Vassar College in 1972; an M.A. from Brown University in 1974; and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981 with a dissertation titled: Absolutism and its Discontents: Fiscal Crisis and Political Opposition in Seventeenth Century France and England.
Before joining the Stony Brook University faculty in 1987, Kimmel worked as assistant professor of sociology at Rutgers University from 1982 to 1986 as well as visiting assistant professor at New York University. He returned to his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley, where he was visiting professor from 1992 to 1994. In the academic year 1992–1993, he was voted "Best Professor" on campus by The Daily Californian.

Howard Stern
Howard Allan Stern (born January 12, 1954) is an American radio and television personality, producer, author, actor, and photographer. He is best known as the host of The Howard Stern Show, his long-running radio show which gained popularity when it was nationally syndicated on terrestrial radio from 1986 to 2005 before its move to Sirius XM Radio in 2006. Stern first wished to be on the radio at five years of age. He landed his first radio jobs while at Boston University—WTBU, the campus station, and WNTN in Newton, Massachusetts. From 1976 to 1982, Stern developed his on-air personality through morning positions at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, WWWW in Detroit, Michigan, and WWDC in Washington, D.C. Stern worked afternoons at WNBC in New York City from 1982 until his firing in 1985.
In 1985, Stern began a 20-year run at WXRK in New York City, where his show was syndicated to 60 markets and attracted 20 million listeners. Stern won numerous awards, including Billboard’s Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year eight times. He became the most fined radio host when the Federal Communications Commission issued fines totaling $2.5 million to station licensees for content it deemed indecent. Stern became one of the highest paid radio figures after signing a five-year deal with Sirius in 2004 worth $500 million. In recent years, Stern took up photography and has had work featured in Hamptons and WHIRL magazines. From 2012 to 2015, he served as a judge on America's Got Talent.

On Monday, July 8, The Center for Gender and Student Engagement (CGSE) and The Tucker Foundation welcomed sociologist and acclaimed author, Michael Kimmel to Dartmouth College as the 2013 CGSE Visionary in Residence. Even though women are allowed to vote in many countries across the globe, attend university and open a bank account, the final gender battle is still far from being fought. That women in the USA only have three-quarters of the opportunities afforded to men in the working world, health, politics and education (World Economic Forum ranking) is unacceptable. In the words of the authors: "It really sucks".

Kimmel's and Kaufman's pro-feminist guidebook is a highly entertaining work garnished with short stories, jokes and comics. Catchwords such as jobs or emotions are dealt with alphabetically. Served up in easily digestible morsels, the book covers the various stages of the feminist struggle and provides data on the current state of gender equality and even on issues such as genital mutilation and honour killings. American sociologist Michael Kimmel is a professor at Stony Brook University in New York and editor of the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities. He is a long-time researcher on men and masculinity as well as gender relations. Michael will kick-off the event by giving a lecture covering the main elements of his book before joining a panel discussion to discuss his approach with guests from Berlin and the audience.

Additionally, Dr. Kimmel is the author and editor of more than twenty texts, including Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity, The Politics of Manhood: Profeminist Men Respond to the Mythopoetic Men's Movement, The Gender of Desire: Essays on Male Sexuality, The Handbook of Studies on Men and Masculinities, and Men and Masculinities: A Social, Cultural, and Historical Encyclopedia, which was named "Best of Reference" by the New York Public Librarians Association. Dr. Kimmel is also the Founding Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Men and Masculinities.
In addition to research, Dr. Kimmel is a co-founder and spokesperson for the National Organization for Men against Sexism (NOMAS), a pro-feminist, gay-affirmative, and anti-racist organization committed to enhancing men's lives. Founded as a "loose-knit spontaneous social movement in the early 1970s," NOMAS now has chapters in Michigan, Georgia, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, and Utah.

Guidebook with entertainment value
Kimmel's and Kaufman's pro-feminist guidebook is a highly entertaining work garnished with short stories, jokes and comics. Catchwords such as jobs or emotions are dealt with alphabetically. Served up in easily digestible morsels, the book covers the various stages of the feminist struggle and provides data on the current state of gender equality and even on issues such as genital mutilation and honour killings. American sociologist Michael Kimmel is a professor at Stony Brook University in New York and editor of the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities. He is a long-time researcher on men and masculinity as well as gender relations. Michael will kick-off the event by giving a lecture covering the main elements of his book before joining a panel discussion to discuss his approach with guests from Berlin and the audience.

Those words were spoken on April 12 by Dr. Michael Kimmel, one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinities, a featured TED Talk speaker, and the SUNY Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University, when he presented Engaging Men for Gender Equality in the Whittenberger Auditorium at 7pm.
The talk was co-sponsored by Google, the IU Center of Excellence for Women in Technology (CEWiT), the SOIC PIT Crew (Promoting Inclusivity in Technology), and SOIC Women in Computing.
