Paul Andersen explains the importance of genetic variation within a population. He begins with a discussion of the devil facial tumor that is a form of cancer transferred between Tasmanian devils. He then explains how a decrease in genetic variability nearly led to the extinction of the black-footed ferret. He finally discussed the importance of genetic variability in disease resistance. He explains how mutations in humans allow some of them to be resistant to HIV and how the allele frequency can be calculated in a population using the Hardy-Weinberg equation.

Prunus mume, with the common names including Chinese plum and Japanese apricot, is an Asian tree species classified in the Armeniaca section of the genus Prunus. The flower, long a beloved subject in the traditional painting of East Asia, is usually translated as plum blossom. This distinct tree species is related to both the plum and apricot trees. Although generally referred to as a plum in English, it is more closely related to the apricot.
Prunus mume originated in the south of China around the Yangtze River and was later introduced to Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Japan. It can be found in sparse forests, stream sides, forested slopes along trails and mountains, sometimes at altitudes up to 1700 to 3100 meter, and regions of cultivation.
Prunus mume is a deciduous tree that starts flowering in mid-winter, typically around January or February in East Asia. It can grow to 4–10 meters tall. The flowers are 2-2.5 cm in diameter and have a strong fragrant scent. They have colors in varying shades of white, pink, and red. The leaves appear shortly after the petals fall, are oval-shaped with a pointed tip, and are 4–8 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide. The fruit ripens in early summer, around June and July in East Asia, and coincides with the rainy season of East Asia, the meiyu (梅雨, literally "plum rain"). The drupe is 2–3 cm in diameter with a groove running from the stalk to the tip. The skin turns yellow, sometimes with a red blush, as it ripens, and the flesh becomes yellow. The tree is cultivated for its fruit and flowers.

A plum or gage is a stone fruit tree in the genus Prunus, subgenus Prunus. The subgenus is distinguished from other subgenera (peaches, cherries, bird cherries, etc.) in the shoots having a terminal bud and solitary side buds (not clustered), the flowers in groups of one to five together on short stems, and the fruit having a groove running down one side and a smooth stone (or pit).
Mature plum fruit may have a dusty-white coating that gives them a glaucous appearance; this is easily rubbed off. This is an epicuticular wax coating and is known as "wax bloom". Dried plum fruits are called dried plums or prunes, although prunes are a distinct type of plum, and may have antedated the fruits now commonly known as plums.[citation needed]
The subgenus is divided into three sections:
Plum fruit tastes sweet and/or tart; the skin may be particularly tart. It is juicy and can be eaten fresh or used in jam-making or other recipes. Plum juice can be fermented into plum wine; when distilled, this produces a brandy known in Eastern Europe as Slivovitz, Rakia, Ţuică or Pálinka. In central England, a cider-like alcoholic beverage known as plum jerkum is made from plums.

Paul Andersen explains the importance of genetic variation within a population. He begins with a discussion of the devil facial tumor that is a form of cancer transferred between Tasmanian devils. He then explains how a decrease in genetic variability nearly led to the extinction of the black-footed ferret. He finally discussed the importance of genetic variability in disease resistance. He explains how mutations in humans allow some of them to be resistant to HIV and how the allele frequency can be calculated in a population using the Hardy-Weinberg equation.

This technique keeps the trees at a manageable height, opens up the fruit tree for maximum sun exposure and good air flow to reduce diseases and lots and lots of fruit for the coming summer harvest!
This technique can be applied to all spur bearing fruit trees (fruit trees that produce fruit over many years on small little shoots off of two year old and older wood)
Things to look out for in this video are setting up the framework of your fruit trees, pruning back lateral branches that could produce fruit to avoid overbearing trees that could cause damage and the Three D's of winter pruning.
