Greater Than One

This article is about the industrial music group. For the 2012 album named Greater Than One, see Dwele. Greater Than One is an English electronic music band, founded by husband and wife Michael Wells and Lee Newman in 1985. They released many albums under this name, and also under the names Tricky Disco, GTO, John + Julie, Church of Extacy, Signs of Chaos, T.D.5, Salami Brothers, Killout Squad, Technohead and L.E.D.. Only a few of their singles were commercially successful. Since Newman’s death on 4 August 1995 from cancer, Wells continues to release music under some of these names, and also as The Man and S.O.L.O.

1985: Greater Than One

In 1985, Newman and Wells met at the Royal College of Art in London, formed Greater Than One, and released their first album Kill the Pedagogue on cassette. During the late 1980s they organised art installations and exhibitions accompanied by their own music: "When the whole audience were in, we started a soundtrack ... war sirens and searchlights. This was designed to disorientate the audience, throwing them into an unexpected nightmare. After the shock, Islamic chanting began which then changed to Song For England, during which we came onstage wearing illuminous skull masks...". They formed their own label Kunst=Kapital and released four further albums under this alias between 1987 and 1990.

Happy Birthday (2002 film)

Happy Birthday is a 2002 film by Yen Tan, his debut long feature film, starring Benjamin Patrick, Michelle E. Michael and John Frazier.

Synopsis

The film recounts two days in the lives of five very different characters all born on July 12, that are faced with problems as their birthday approaches. Jim (Benjamin Patrick), a gay, overweight telemarketer working for a weight loss program is facing self-esteem issues, whereas Ron (John Frazier), a church minister who preaches about conversion but himself is addicted to watching gay porn, and Javed (Devashish Saxena), a Pakistani lives in the U.S. with a gay porn actor but is faced by the double dilemma of being condemned by his Muslim family and is in imminent danger of being deported from the States.

Meanwhile Kelly (Michelle E. Michael), a young lesbian weathers a breakup with her lover and considers an earlier affair and Tracy (Ethel Lung), an Asian lesbian, goes back in the closet when her mother renders a visit.

Happy Birthday (mixtape)

Happy Birthday is the fourth mixtape released by British rapper Tinie Tempah. The mixtape was released for free download on December 16, 2011 on Disturbing London Records - featuring production from 3Mindz, S-X, Wizzy Wow and Stargate. The mixtape title is Happy Birthday because the mixtape came into production around Tempah's 23rd birthday (November 7). Tracks "Like It or Love It", "Lucky Cunt" and "Till I'm Gone (Remix)" were leaked prior to the mixtape release to create buzz, with "Like It or Love It" receiving minor radio airplay. Happy Birthday features British rappers Chipmunk, Giggs, Wretch 32, G-Frsh, Tinchy Stryder and Krept and Konan, including a variety of American rappers; Soulja Boy, J. Cole and Big Sean, along with Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T and Jim Jones on the "Till I'm Gone" remix (originally released on August 29, 2011). British vocalist J. Warner also makes a guest appearance.

Happy Birthday (Stevie Wonder song)

"Happy Birthday" is a 1981 single written, produced, and performed by Stevie Wonder for the Motown label. Wonder, a social activist, was one of the main figures in the campaign to have the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. become a national holiday, and created this single to make the cause known. Besides being released as a single, the song also appears on Wonder's album Hotter Than July.

Background

The song, one of many of Wonder's songs to feature the use of a keyboard synthesizer, features Wonder lamenting the fact that anyone would oppose the idea of a Dr. King holiday, where "peace is celebrated throughout the world" and singing to King in the chorus, "Happy birthday to you". The holiday, he proposes, would facilitate the realization of Dr. King's dreams of integration and "love and unity for all of God's children".

Wonder used the song to popularize the campaign, and continued his fight for the holiday, holding the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. United States President Ronald Reagan approved the creation of the holiday, signing it into existence on November 2, 1983. The first official Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, held the third Monday in January of each year, was held on January 20, 1986, and was commemorated with a large-scale concert, where Stevie Wonder was the headlining performer.

Happy Birthday (Altered Images album)

Happy Birthday is the debut album by the British new wave band Altered Images. Released in 1981, the album's title track, "Happy Birthday", became the band's biggest hit, peaking at number 2 in the UK in October of that year.

The album reached number 26 in the UK Album Chart and was certified Silver by the BPI for sales in excess of 60,000 copies.

Originally released on vinyl album and cassette in 1981, the album was reissued on CD in 2004 by Edsel Records. Entitled Happy Birthday...Plus, it contained the original album along with six bonus tracks including the band's first single "Dead Pop Stars" which had peaked at number 67 earlier in 1981 but was not included on the original album.
