Louis Marshall Jones (October 20, 1913 – February 19, 1998), known professionally as Grandpa Jones, was an American banjo player and "old time" country and gospel music singer. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Born in the farming community of Niagra in Henderson County, Kentucky, Jones spent his teenage years in Akron, Ohio, where he began singing country music tunes on a radio show on WJW. In 1931, Jones joined the Pine Ridge String Band, which provided the musical accompaniment for the very popular Lum and Abner show. By 1935 his pursuit of a musical career took him to WBZ (AM) radio in Boston, Massachusetts where he met musician/songwriter Bradley Kincaid, who gave him the nickname "Grandpa" because of his off-stage grumpiness at early-morning radio shows. Jones liked the name and decided to create a stage persona based around it.

AND SEEK NOT YOUR FORTUNE IN THE DARK DREARY MINES
IT WILL FOR AS A HABIT AND SEEP IN YOUR SOUL
'TIL TH STREAM OF YOUR BLOOD RUNS AS BLACK AS THE COAL
WHERE IT'S DARK AS A DUNGEON AND DAMP AS THE DEW
WHERE THE DANGERS ARE DOUBLE AND THE PLEASURES ARE
FEW
WHERE THE RAIN NEVER FALLS AND THE SUN NEVER SHINES
IT'S DARK AS DUNGEON WAY DOWN IN THE MINES
THERE'S MANY A MAN WHO I'VE KNOWN IN MY DAY
WHO LIVED JUST TO LABOR HIS WHOLE LIFE AWAY
LIKE A FRIEND WITH HIS DOPE OR A DRUNKARD HIS WINE
A MAN WILL HAVE LUST FOR TE LRE OF THE MINES
WELL I HOPE WHEN I'M GONE AND THE AGES SHALL ROLL
MY BODY WILL BLACKEN AND TURN INTO COAL
THEN I'LL LOOK FROM THE DOOR OF MY HEAVENLY HOME
AND PITY THE MINER THAT'S DIGGING MY BONES
