A recent New York Times article exposed the "hidden riches" of the family of China's Premier Wen Jiabao. In a matter of days Wen and his lawyers were denying the details of the story.
As it turns out Wen Jiabao, known as the "people's premier", and his family have assets totalling $2.7 billion dollars. According to the New York Times article, his family came into its wealth after Jiabao became a part of China's political elite.
Born into a "poor family" Jiabao made it part of his political agenda to be more relatable to the Chinese people. His Mother, a schoolteacher, now holds over $120 million in assets. Other family members have been financially supported by state run businesses such as China Mobile, China's largest mobile phone operator.
This news breaks at a bad time for China, as a leadership change is about to take place November 8. Censors did not take long to block the New York Times along with other links to the article and social media sites, a practice they have been doing quite regularly over the past few months. In an unusual move for Chinese Leaders, Wen Jiabao's lawyers have issued a statement against the foreign press.

STORYLINE
Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in China on Sunday on a visit aimed at mending tattered ties between the Asian giants, and to discuss North Korea's threats to conduct a nuclear test, a move which Beijing and Tokyo have warned would have serious repercussions.
After arriving at Beijing airport, Abe was greeted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the Great Hall of the People.
The leaders inspected Chinese national guards and later entered the hall for talks.
During the meeting, Abe thanked Wen for "making time in your busy schedule in order to meet with us."
Wen told Abe that developing bilateral cooperation would serve "the basic interests of our peoples".
"We should continue to move forward with friendly and cooperative relations between China and Japan," Wen said.
Abe, elected prime minister just two weeks ago, put the visit to China at the top of his diplomatic agenda because of a deepening rift over former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to a Tokyo war shrine and festering territorial disputes.
After meeting Chinese leaders, Abe is scheduled to fly to South Korea for similar talks on Monday.
It will be the first summit between Japan and China since Koizumi met Jiang Zemin in October 2001 and the first full-fledged state visit, with a formal welcoming ceremony, since 1999.
Japan's last summit with South Korea was in June last year.
Japanese officials said the hastily arranged visits are aimed not so much at making specific agreements but at simply increasing trust.
Indeed, Abe appeared to have little to offer his hosts; he has vowed not to say one way or the other if he will pay homage at the Yasukuni war shrine and is not expected to make any concessions on Tokyo's long-standing territorial claims.
North Korea's threats to conduct a nuclear test, meanwhile, have added a new dimension to the visit.
North Korea said through its state media that it will conduct a test, but did not specify when.
The North claims to have nuclear weapons, but hasn't performed any known test to prove it.
Six-nation talks aimed at persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions have been stalled for almost a year, and North Korea says it needs an atomic arsenal to deter a possible attack from the United States.
China, the North's most important ally, and Japan are both members of the six-way talks.

Yu Jie 余杰 is a remarkably prolific writer. Born in 1973, Yu graduated from Peking University in 1997 and took a master's degree in 2000. Even while still a student, he published a collection of his essays, Fire and Ice. Numerous books have followed, including a novel Fragrant Grass Mountain. He's not been able to publish his recent work in China, but has found an audience in Hong Kong and Taiwan. His newest book, China's Greatest Actor: Wen Jiabao, sold out almost immediately. Yu Jie says that press attention following efforts by Beijing police during the summer to discourage him from publishing the book did much to drive sales.
Yu Jie spoke at USC on October 7 and returned to China a few days later. Press reports say that he and his wife Liu Min have been under virtual house arrest since October 18. These reports describe Yu's confinement as part of a larger effort by China's government to silence critics following the announcement on October 8 that Liu Xiaobo, a writer and democracy activist imprisoned since 2008, would receive the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
Yu argues that the notion that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is reform-minded, someone who wants to open up China's governing system, is wrong. He suggests that as with previous Chinese Communist Party leaders, Wen plays a carefully defined role and that any perceived "space" between his ideas for China's present and future and those of Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao is an illusion.
Yu believes that he has a duty to speak out. He draws inspiration from both Liu Xiaobo and Vaclav Havel. He says that a democratic China must be built by ordinary people and that it's pointless to wait for leaders to initiate democratization. He concludes by saying that he's chosen to live freely -- even if he doesn't live in a free society.

In the last three years, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
has mentioned "political reform" many times.
Recently, he suggested in an academic conference
that people should not give in to any authorities,
should "think independently" and have "free spirit".
Internationally, Wen Jiaobao is thought to be trying rid
the shackles of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
He is looking for a breakthrough
towards Chinese democracy.
Commentators believe that if Wen Jiaobao wants China
to have a real democracy, he must tear down what remains of the CCP's wreck.
In the afternoon of June 11, Premier Wen Jiabao reported
in the 16th Academic Conference of the Chinese Academy
of Sciences and the 11th Academic Conference
of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In the conference, Wen Jiabao called for the academics
and staff to have a clear understanding of the gap
in science & technology between the West and China.
He urged "lively, unfettered and a free academic environment,
where people dare to invent and create".
He emphasized the spirit of "thinking independently".
Wen's speech was published in the "People's Daily"
and other official State media.
Many main websites republished it as well,
and it also attracted international attention.
Wang Beiji, a political commentator, said that the words
of Wen Jiabao's speech have deep meaning.
Wang Beiji: "I feel Wen Jiabao has started to take actions
this year. He had talked for a while, but hadn't acted.
Actually, even if he wants to act,
there is a big resistance within the CCP.
This is added to the limitations of himself,
so it needs a process. It's a good thing."
In May, Wen Jiaobao visited China University of Geosciences,
his old college, when he went to Hubei for research.
He spoke to the students in the university.
He said that scientists must understand the laws
of nature and truth, and not to give in to any authority.
The university should promote the spirit
of freedom and independence.
Wen Jiabao also spoke in the two sessions in March.
His independent personality was unknown by others.
He said he should persist with the principle "diligence
in his position, to follow justice and have no regrets."
Wang Beiji hopes Wen Jiabao can take more action
at a faster pace, and with strong determination.
Wang Beiji: "On one hand, we feel that Wen Jiabao
will start to act within the CCP system gradually.
So, his words are relatively positive.
On the other hand, we should be clear that we cannot
have any illusion about the CCP.
No matter if it is self-deception of political reform,
or CCP propaganda to redress 'June 4'.
The CCP doesn't have the qualification to redress 'June 4',
and doesn't qualify in leading China's reform."
On June 6, Li Wangyang, a democracy activist from Hunan,
was suddenly found hanged in hospital.
Li's family strongly questioned the cause of death.
His friends published many live photos
and videos online to reveal their doubts.
On June 9, local police forcibly cremated Li's body
without his relatives' agreement.
This grabbed international attention.
People challenged the authorities that they
have "covered their tracks".
At this time, people from all over the world
condemned the CCP's evil actions.
They have pledged to track down the truth.
Wang Beiji said the CCP is the root
of social unrest in China.
How evil is the CCP? Wen Jiabao knows the answer clearly.
Wang said if the CCP is a ship, then it has thousands of holes.
It's leaking everywhere and can't be repaired.
Wang Beiji hopes Wen Jiabao can destroy the CCP shipwreck,
and build a new ship for China together with Chinese people.

Wen Jiabao (born 19 September 1942) is the sixth and current Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, serving as China's head of government and leading its cabinet. In his capacity as Premier, Wen is regarded as the leading figure behind China's economic policy. He also holds membership in the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, the country's de facto top power organ, where he is ranked third out of nine members.
Wen has a professional background in geology and engineering. He holds a postgraduate degree from the Beijing Institute of Geology, where he graduated in 1968. He was subsequently sent to Gansu province for geological work, and remained in China's hinterland regions during his climb up the bureaucratic ladder. He was transferred to Beijing to work as the Chief of the Party General Office between 1986 and 1993, and accompanied General Secretary Zhao Ziyang to Tiananmen Square during the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests. In 1998, he was promoted to the post of Vice Premier under Zhu Rongji, his mentor, and oversaw the broad portfolios of agriculture and finance.

James Gordon Brown (born 20 February 1951) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party from 2007 until 2010. He previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Labour Government from 1997 to 2007, becoming the longest-serving holder of that office in modern history. Brown has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 1983, for Dunfermline East until 2005, and currently for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.
Brown became Prime Minister on 27 June 2007, after the resignation of Tony Blair and three days after becoming Leader of the governing Labour Party. His tenure ended on 11 May 2010, when he resigned as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. Brown was one of only three people to serve in the Cabinet continuously from Labour's victory in 1997 until its defeat in 2010, the others being Jack Straw and Alistair Darling.
Brown has a PhD in history from the University of Edinburgh and spent his early career working as a lecturer at a further education college and a television journalist. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1983; first for Dunfermline East and since 2005 for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. As Prime Minister, he also held the offices of First Lord of the Treasury and the Minister for the Civil Service.

Yu Jie 余杰 is a remarkably prolific writer. Born in 1973, Yu graduated from Peking University in 1997 and took a master's degree in 2000. Even while still a student, he published a collection of his essays, Fire and Ice. Numerous books have followed, including a novel Fragrant Grass Mountain. He's not been able to publish his recent work in China, but has found an audience in Hong Kong and Taiwan. His newest book, China's Greatest Actor: Wen Jiabao, sold out almost immediately. Yu Jie says that press attention following efforts by Beijing police during the summer to discourage him from publishing the book did much to drive sales. Yu Jie spoke at USC on October 7 and returned to China a few days later. Press reports say that he and his wife Liu Min have been under virtual house arrest since October 18. These reports describe Yu's confinement as part of a larger effort by China's government to silence critics following the announcement on October 8 that Liu Xiaobo, a writer and democracy activist imprisoned since 2008, would receive the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. Yu argues that the notion that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is reform-minded, someone who wants to open up China's governing system, is wrong. He suggests that as with previous Chinese Communist Party leaders, Wen plays a carefully defined role and that any perceived "space" between his ideas for China's present and future and those of Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao is an illusion. Yu believes that he has a duty to speak out. He draws inspiration from both Liu Xiaobo and Vaclav Havel. He says that a democratic China must be built by ordinary people and that it's pointless to wait for leaders to initiate democratization. He concludes by saying that he's chosen to live freely -- even if he doesn't live in a free society. Yu Jie was among the Chinese Christians meeting with US Pres. George W. Recently, he suggested in an academic conference that people should not give in to any authorities, should "think independently" and have "free spirit". Internationally, Wen Jiaobao is thought to be trying rid the shackles of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He is looking for a breakthrough towards Chinese democracy. Commentators believe that if Wen Jiaobao wants China to have a real democracy, he must tear down what remains of the CCP's wreck. In the afternoon of June 11, Premier Wen Jiabao reported in the 16th Academic Conference of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 11th Academic Conference of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In the conference, Wen Jiabao called for the academics and staff to have a clear understanding of the gap in science & technology between the West and China. He urged "lively, unfettered and a free academic environment, where people dare to invent and create". He emphasized the spirit of "thinking independently". Wen's speech was published in the "People's Daily" and other official State media. Many main websites republished it as well, and it also attracted international attention. Wang Beiji, a political commentator, said that the words of Wen Jiabao's speech have deep meaning. Wang Beiji: "I feel Wen Jiabao has started to take actions this year. He had talked for a while, but hadn't acted. Actually, even if he wants to act, there is a big resistance within the CCP. This is added to the limitations of himself, so it needs a process. It's a good thing." In May, Wen Jiaobao visited China University of Geosciences, his old college, when he went to Hubei for research. He spoke to the students in the university. He said that scientists must understand the laws of nature and truth, and not to give in to any authority. The university should promote the spirit of freedom and independence. Wen Jiabao also spoke in the two sessions in March. His independent personality was unknown by others. He said he should persist with the principle "diligence in his position, to follow justice and have no regrets." Wang Beiji hopes Wen Jiabao can take more action at a faster pace, and with strong determination. Wang Beiji: "On one hand, we feel that Wen Jiabao will start to act within the CCP system gradually. So, his words are relatively positive. On the other hand, we should be clear that we cannot have any illusion about the CCP. No matter if it is self-deception of political reform, or CCP propaganda to redress 'June 4'. The CCP doesn't have the qualification to redress 'June 4', and doesn't qualify in leading China's reform." On June 6, Li Wangyang, a democracy activist from Hunan, was suddenly found hanged in hospital. Li's family strongly questioned the cause of death. His friends published many live photos and videos online to reveal their doubts. On June 9, local police forcibly cremated Li's body without his relatives' agreement. This grabbed international attention. People challenged the authorities that they have "covered their tracks". At this time, people from all over the world condemned the CCP's evil actions. They have pledged to track down the truth. Wang Beiji said the CCP is the root of social unrest in China. How evil is the CCP? Wen Jiabao knows the answer clearly. Wang said if the CCP is a ship, then it has thousands of holes. It's leaking everywhere and can't be repaired. Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in China on Sunday on a visit aimed at mending tattered ties between the Asian giants, and to discuss North Korea's threats to conduct a nuclear test, a move which Beijing and Tokyo have warned would have serious repercussions.
After arriving at Beijing airport, Abe was greeted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the Great Hall of the People.
The leaders inspected Chinese national guards and later entered the hall for talks.
During the meeting, Abe thanked Wen for "making time in your busy schedule in order to meet with us."
Wen told Abe that developing bilateral cooperation would serve "the basic interests of our peoples".
"We should continue to move forward with friendly and cooperative relations between China and Japan," Wen said.
Abe, elected prime minister just two weeks ago, put the visit to China at the top of his diplomatic agenda because of a deepening rift over former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to a Tokyo war shrine and festering territorial disputes.
After meeting Chinese leaders, Abe is scheduled to fly to South Korea for similar talks on Monday.
It will be the first summit between Japan and China since Koizumi met Jiang Zemin in October 2001 and the first full-fledged state visit, with a formal welcoming ceremony, since 1999.
Japan's last summit with South Korea was in June last year.
Japanese officials said the hastily arranged visits are aimed not so much at making specific agreements but at simply increasing trust.
Indeed, Abe appeared to have little to offer his hosts; he has vowed not to say one way or the other if he will pay homage at the Yasukuni war shrine and is not expected to make any concessions on Tokyo's long-standing territorial claims.
North Korea's threats to conduct a nuclear test, meanwhile, have added a new dimension to the visit.
North Korea said through its state media that it will conduct a test, but did not specify when.
The North claims to have nuclear weapons, but hasn't performed any known test to prove it.
Six-nation talks aimed at persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions have been stalled for almost a year, and North Korea says it needs an atomic arsenal to deter a possible attack from the United States.
China, the North's most important ally, and Japan are both members of the six-way talks.

Yu Jie 余杰 is a remarkably prolific writer. Born in 1973, Yu graduated from Peking University in 1997 and took a master's degree in 2000. Even while still a student, he published a collection of his essays, Fire and Ice. Numerous books have followed, including a novel Fragrant Grass Mountain. He's not been able to publish his recent work in China, but has found an audience in Hong Kong and Taiwan. His newest book, China's Greatest Actor: Wen Jiabao, sold out almost immediately. Yu Jie says that press attention following efforts by Beijing police during the summer to discourage him from publishing the book did much to drive sales.
Yu Jie spoke at USC on October 7 and returned to China a few days later. Press reports say that he and his wife Liu Min have been under virtual house arrest since October 18. These reports describe Yu's confinement as part of a larger effort by China's government to silence critics following the announcement on October 8 that Liu Xiaobo, a writer and democracy activist imprisoned since 2008, would receive the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.
Yu argues that the notion that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is reform-minded, someone who wants to open up China's governing system, is wrong. He suggests that as with previous Chinese Communist Party leaders, Wen plays a carefully defined role and that any perceived "space" between his ideas for China's present and future and those of Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao is an illusion.
Yu believes that he has a duty to speak out. He draws inspiration from both Liu Xiaobo and Vaclav Havel. He says that a democratic China must be built by ordinary people and that it's pointless to wait for leaders to initiate democratization. He concludes by saying that he's chosen to live freely -- even if he doesn't live in a free society.

In the last three years, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
has mentioned "political reform" many times.
Recently, he suggested in an academic conference
that people should not give in to any authorities,
should "think independently" and have "free spirit".
Internationally, Wen Jiaobao is thought to be trying rid
the shackles of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
He is looking for a breakthrough
towards Chinese democracy.
Commentators believe that if Wen Jiaobao wants China
to have a real democracy, he must tear down what remains of the CCP's wreck.
In the afternoon of June 11, Premier Wen Jiabao reported
in the 16th Academic Conference of the Chinese Academy
of Sciences and the 11th Academic Conference
of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In the conference, Wen Jiabao called for the academics
and staff to have a clear understanding of the gap
in science & technology between the West and China.
He urged "lively, unfettered and a free academic environment,
where people dare to invent and create".
He emphasized the spirit of "thinking independently".
Wen's speech was published in the "People's Daily"
and other official State media.
Many main websites republished it as well,
and it also attracted international attention.
Wang Beiji, a political commentator, said that the words
of Wen Jiabao's speech have deep meaning.
Wang Beiji: "I feel Wen Jiabao has started to take actions
this year. He had talked for a while, but hadn't acted.
Actually, even if he wants to act,
there is a big resistance within the CCP.
This is added to the limitations of himself,
so it needs a process. It's a good thing."
In May, Wen Jiaobao visited China University of Geosciences,
his old college, when he went to Hubei for research.
He spoke to the students in the university.
He said that scientists must understand the laws
of nature and truth, and not to give in to any authority.
The university should promote the spirit

People challenged the authorities that they
have "covered their tracks".
At this time, people from all over the world
