Arne Skouen (18 October 1913 – 24 May 2003) was a Norwegian best known for his work as a film director and as a journalist. He was internationally famed for his 1957 film Ni Liv (Nine Lives) which also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His first film was released in 1949, titled Gategutter (Street Boys). His 1959 film The Master and His Servants was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1962 film Cold Tracks was entered into the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival.
Nine Lives may refer to:
Edith Carlmar (Edith Mary Johanne Mathiesen) (15 November 1911 – 17 May 2003) was an actress and Norway's first female film director. She is known for films such as Fjols til fjells (1957), Aldri annet enn bråk (1954), and Ung flukt (1959). Her 1949 film, Døden er et kjærtegn (Death is a Caress), is considered to be Norway's first film noir. The last film she directed, Ung Flukt, introduced Liv Ullmann, Norway's most famous actor internationally, to the silver screen.
Carlmar came from a poor family in the working class districts of East Oslo. However, she did manage to take dancing classes and made her debut on stage at the age of 15. In the theater she met Otto Carlmar whom she married three years later. From 1936 she worked as an actress in various theatres. Here she met the film director Tancred Ibsen who introduced her to the world of cinema.
In 1949 she and her husband started Carlmar Film A/S, and began writing scripts, directing and producing films. They made ten feature films over a ten-year period. After a decade of film-making Carlmar retired as a director. In the last part of her life she accepted only minor acting roles in plays and movies.
Tancred Ibsen (11 July 1893 – 4 December 1978) was a Norwegian officer, pilot, film director and screenwriter.
He was the son of Sigurd Ibsen, and the grandson of Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. He was married to dancer and actress Lillebil Ibsen. His son Tancred Ibsen, Jr. (1921-2015) was a Norwegian diplomat.
In 1917, Tancred Ibsen started his career in the Army at the Norwegian Army Air Service and started the training for pilot at Kjeller Airport.
Not content with his military career, he started the first civilian active airplane company, A/S Aero in 1920, financed by his uncle, businessman Einar Bjørnson, and two shipowners. The company successfully operated demonstration, advertising, and limited mail flights with Tancred Ibsen as the head pilot. The company also chartered airplanes to the Det Norske Luftfartrederi routes in southern Norway. Ibsen soon tired of his career as a pilot, and the activity of A/S Aero ended, with the company becoming part of the aircraft factory in Tønsberg, A/S Norske Aeroplanfabrik. (When that company later went broke, it turned out that A/S Aero had never been formally registered as a limited company, leaving Ibsen personally liable for sizable debts. He managed a favourable settlement.)

Nine Lives (Norwegian: Ni Liv) is a 1957 Norwegian film about Jan Baalsrud, who was a member of the Norwegian resistance during World War II. Nine Lives was adapted by director Arne Skouen from the novel We Die Alone by David Howarth. Set during WW II, the film charts the adventures of Jan Baalsrud (Jack Fjeldstad), the sole survivor of a Norwegian commando unit. Trapped behind enemy lines, the hero tries to reach the safety of neutral Sweden. Despite the ongoing threat of execution -- not to mention the devastating deadliness of the Norwegian winter -- Baalsrud is aided and abetted by several sympathetic Norwegian patriots. The movie tells the story of this hazardous escape. It is considered one of the most epic movies ever made in Norway. The finale finds Baalsrud somewhere in Lapland, w...
