As a chemist working in a major office furniture company, Michael Werner has the assignment to analyze many of the materials used in their company's products. He shares with us the story behind the wide array of chemicals that we are exposed to through our daily contacts with everyday products. He shows us a better way to live in which products are designed for reuse and that the chemicals used to make them take into account their impact on the ecosystem are part of the design consideration. He describes a world in which our design moves from an economic system to an ecological one in a circular economy.
Mike Werner is a chemist, engineer, and sustainability strategist with Haworth, a global office furniture manufacturer. Having decided to give up the life of a pharmaceutical chemist, he has been dedicated to eliminating toxic chemicals from consumer products instead of creating them. Mike also advocates for design thinking as a platform for addressing corporate sustainability and driving business solutions. He has served as a sustainability advisor to the Department of Homeland Security and the National Institute of Building Sciences. When asked about the future of business growth, Mike responded: "Because we expect to see significant global changes in consumption, resource availability, and volatility over the next 15 years, our businesses must find ways to decouple growth from constrained resources. Innovation must start today if we are to have sustainable, profitable business."

As we continue to build houses and cities designed for the future are we possibly forgetting the true elements of architecture that matter the most? Have we underestimated the significance of sustainable living? In this TEDx University of Nicosia talk, Architect and sustainability expert Nicolas Duval reminds us of the things that matter the most in designing homes and cities for our future.
Nicolas Duval was born in Famagusta, Cyprus in 1973. He studied painting and sculpture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and then architecture at the ENSA of Toulouse, France. After graduating he moved back to Cyprus where he gained experience in different practices before co establishing Duval Fournier Architects in 2007. A practice dealing mainly with residential architecture, retail and interior design which values dialogue, curiosity and aesthetics.
Nicolas Duval further enhanced his expertise by pursuing a specialisation in energy efficiency obtaining accreditation as an Energy Auditor. In 2014, he co-founded Terra Consultants, a firm specialising in energy efficiency, sustainability and ways of adding value to the community.

On a steep lot that was initially considered to be unbuildable, a dedicated team of design professionals produced the first LEED-certified-Platinum home in Marin County, California. Nice trick. But how did they do it?
Like good magicians, the team took care to keep the backstage machinery well out of the spotlight. As builder Michael McDonald says, "We try to make the sustainability aspect of it disappear."
That artfully hidden green technology includes in-floor hydronic heating, a solar array that provides 60% of the home's electricity, LED lighting, cabinetry and floors made from sustainably harvested woods -even the roof is made of recycled metals.

A Senior Vice President and Director of City Park Development for The Trust for Public Land, Adrian Benepe is one of the nation's experts on the nexus of the public, private, and non-profit sectors in public space development and management. Born and raised in New York, Benepe worked for twenty-seven years in the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, serving as Park Commissioner for eleven years under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, prior to joining The Trust for Public Land. During that time he oversaw a major expansion of the city's parks system, including restoring historic parks such as Central Park and Battery Park, adding 730 acres of new parkland including Hudson River Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the High Line, and laying the groundwork for an additional 2,000 acres of parks.

Sustainable design (also called environmental design, environmentally sustainable design, environmentally conscious design, etc.) is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic and ecological, sustainability.
The intention of sustainable design is to "eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design". Manifestations of sustainable design require no non-renewable resources, impact the environment minimally, and relate people with the natural environment.
Beyond the "elimination of negative environmental impact", sustainable design must create projects that are meaningful innovations that can shift behaviour. A dynamic balance between economy and society, intended to generate long-term relationships between user and object/service and finally to be respectful and mindful of the environmental and social differences.
Applications of this philosophy range from the microcosm — small objects for everyday use, through to the macrocosm — buildings, cities, and the Earth's physical surface. It is a philosophy that can be applied in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, urban planning, engineering, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, fashion design and human-computer interaction.

Huge mansion built with sustainable design - Built Green video
On a steep lot that was initially considered to be unbuildable, a dedicated team of design professionals produced the first LEED-certified-Platinum home in Marin County, California. Nice trick. But how did they do it? Like good magicians, the team took care to keep the backstage machinery well out of the spotlight. As builder Michael McDonald says, "We try to make the sustainability aspect of it disappear." That artfully hidden green technology includes in-floor hydronic heating, a solar array that provides 60% of the home's electricity, LED lighting, cabinetry and floors made from sustainably harvested woods -even the roof is made of recycled metals. When asked about the future of business growth, Mike responded: "Because we expect to see significant global changes in consumption, resource availability, and volatility over the next 15 years, our businesses must find ways to decouple growth from constrained resources. As we continue to build houses and cities designed for the future are we possibly forgetting the true elements of architecture that matter the most? Have we underestimated the significance of sustainable living? Nicolas Duval further enhanced his expertise by pursuing a specialisation in energy efficiency obtaining accreditation as an Energy Auditor. In 2014, he co-founded Terra Consultants, a firm specialising in energy efficiency, sustainability and ways of adding value to the community.

Andy has led significant sustainable projects such as the recently completed CityCenter project in Las Vegas, the largest LEED Gold certified project in the world. In addition, Gensler just completed the 60-story Ritz Carlton Hotel & Residences at LA Live and is designing the LEED Platinum headquarters building at the Port of Long Beach, and Shang- hai Tower, the second tallest building in the world, which will be one of the worlds most sustainably advanced buildings. Andy is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
