Ōdachi
An ōdachi (大太刀) (large/great sword) or nodachi (野太刀, field sword) was a type of traditionally made Japanese sword (nihonto) used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. The Chinese equivalent and 'cousin' for this type of sword in terms of weight and length is the Miao dao, and the Western battlefield equivalent (though less similar) is the Spanish Espada Bastarda or Scottish Claymore.
The character for ō (大) means "big" or "great". The dachi here (太刀) is the same as tachi (太刀, lit. "great sword"), the older style of sword/mounts that predate the katana. The chi is also the same character as katana (刀) and the tō in nihontō (日本刀 "Japanese sword"), originally from the Chinese character for a blade,dāo.
To qualify as an ōdachi, the sword in question would have a blade length of around 3 shaku (35.79 inches or 90.91 cm); however, as with most terms in Japanese sword arts, there is no exact definition of the size of an ōdachi.
Purpose
Practically speaking, the function/use of most ōdachi fall into the first two categories—as ceremonial objects and cavalry swords. The possible functions of the ōdachi can be categorized as follows:

Cutting with the Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi/Nodachi
Cutting with the Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi/Nodachi Here's Aldwin cutting with Geisha's Blade's version of the Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi/Nodachi. This was during one of our cutting parties 7 years ago. This was the first time he used a sword of this length for cutting. The sword has an overall length of about 69 inches. The blade is made of hand forged, fully sharpened 1050 carbon steel with a length of about 50 inches; the handle length is approx 18 inches. Due to the blade's massive length and the thick girth of the banana trunk, the blade slightly got bent on the first cut. Please check the comments section for the full video. Odachi and Nodachi were very large katana that were mainly used on horseback, from the Kamakura (1185-1333) to the Sengoku era (1467-1615).
It was meant for the samurai to appeal to their strength and bravery, which was thought of as something honorable for a warrior at the time.
However, the definition of Odachi and Nodachi are actually not clearly defined and there is no correct answer. For example, depending on the researcher or study, the term “katana” can represent 5 to 9 (or even more) types of swords.
It might be useful to remember though, that “O” of Odachi simply means “big,” while “No” of Nodachi means “wild/vulgar.” So I personally understand that “Odachi” is a general term for the very long katana and “Nodachi” is a kind of “Odachi” that was meant to be actually used in battle.
By the way, the largest Nodachi (used in battle) recorded in history had a blade length of 282cm, and the longest Odachi that exists today is 345.5cm (full length 465.5cm) which is dedicated to a shrine (in Yamaguchi prefecture).

Odachi and Nodachi were very large katana that were mainly used on horseback, from the Kamakura (1185-1333) to the Sengoku era (1467-1615).
It was meant for the samurai to appeal to their strength and bravery, which was thought of as something honorable for a warrior at the time.
However, the definition of Odachi and Nodachi are actually not clearly defined and there is no correct answer. For example, depending on the researcher or study, the term “katana” can represent 5 to 9 (or even more) types of swords.
It might be useful to remember though, that “O” of Odachi simply means “big,” while “No” of Nodachi means “wild/vulgar.” So I personally understand that “Odachi” is a general term for the very long katana and “Nodachi” is a kind of “Odachi” that was meant to be actually used in battle.
By the way, the largest Nodachi (used in battle) recorded in history had a blade length of 282cm, and the longest Odachi that exists today is 345.5cm (full length 465.5cm) which is dedicated to a shrine (in Yamaguchi prefecture).

Here's Aldwin cutting with Geisha's Blade's version of the Sephiroth's Masamune Odachi/Nodachi. This was during one of our cutting parties 7 years ago. This was the first time he used a sword of this length for cutting. The sword has an overall length of about 69 inches. The blade is made of hand forged, fully sharpened 1050 carbon steel with a length of about 50 inches; the handle length is approx 18 inches.
Due to the blade's massive length and the thick girth of the banana trunk, the blade slightly got bent on the first cut. Please check the comments section for the full video. Then on the last cut, since the blade is so long, the tip of the blade hit the ground. Ouch! 😅 He still had fun cutting with it, but he definitely needs to practice cutting with a sword of this length!
It's really difficult to wield a very long sword, especially if you're not trained in using one. But with enough training, you'll be able to handle it with ease like these guys:

Many people are misunderstanding
A sword called "Odachi"（大太刀） or "Nodachi"（野太刀） is a generic term for "long sword" which exceeds about 90 cm (三尺).
Other than that, it does not mean that a particularly strict classification method is decided.
Whether it is uchigatana or tachi is not an important classification.
This is one of technique for beginners. We learn how to unsheath the sword, and how to thrust.
Kuwami sensei uses "Sanshaku-Sanzun-To (三尺三寸刀), blade length: 99cm, weight: 2kg" in video clip. Our official blade length is 2 Shaku 2 Sun (二尺二寸) but we practice technique with long blade sword in stages.

三尺三寸の長尺刀（2kg）を用いています。
一尺=30.3cm
一寸=3.03cm
なので一寸法師の身長は3cmほど。
