How to Know When You Need to Change or Flush Your Coolant. Do you need new antifreeze or a radiator flush? Learn 4 different methods to test your coolant including doing a visual inspection, using a hydrometer to test the freezing point and boiling point, using a multimeter to check the antifreeze, and testing pH.

Antifreeze not only lowers the freezing point in your car's cooling system, but it also raises the boiling point. Antifreeze is usually mixed 50/50 with water, since the thermal properties of water are much better than antifreeze. The antifreeze also has rust and corrosion inhibitors in it which protects the metals of your cooling system.

Learn how to flush and fill the coolant in your car or truck. Keep your radiator, heater core, and engine clean. Flushing your coolant is good for the cooling system to prevent rust and to prevent your car from overheating.

An antifreeze is a chemical additive which lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid. An antifreeze mixture is used to achieve freezing-point depression for cold environments and also may achieve boiling-point elevation to enable higher liquid temperatures (a colligative agent giving both antifreeze and "anti-boil" when used for both properties.)
Because water has good properties as a coolant, antifreeze is used in internal combustion engines and other heat transfer applications, such as HVAC chillers and solar water heaters. The purpose of antifreeze is to prevent a rigid enclosure from undergoing catastrophic deformation due to expansion when water turns to ice. Commercially, either the additive or the mixture may be referred to as antifreeze. Careful selection of an antifreeze can enable a wide temperature range in which the mixture remains in the liquid phase, which is critical to efficient heat transfer and the proper functioning of heat exchangers.
Most automotive engines are "water"-cooled to remove waste heat, although the "water" is actually antifreeze/water mixture and not plain water. The term engine coolant is widely used in the automotive industry, which covers its primary function of convective heat transfer for internal combustion engines. When used in an automotive context, corrosion inhibitors are added to help protect vehicles' radiators, which often contain a range of electrochemically incompatible metals (aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass, solder, et cetera). Water pump seal lubricant is also added.

Antifreeze not only lowers the freezing point in your car's cooling system, but it also raises the boiling point. Antifreeze is usually mixed 50/50 with water, since the thermal properties of water are much better than antifreeze. The antifreeze also has rust and corrosion inhibitors in it which protects the metals of your cooling system.

We heat the antifreeze WAY above its boiling point ----beyond its flash point but because it is in a sealed container, it remains a liquid until the plug blows out and the pressure is allowed to drop.
The test tube is made of a Pyrex-like glass and can withstand some pretty high temperatures and pressures as we have shown in past videos.
These are very small scale tests but still pose dangers. Do not attempt!
