Playing outside is a mysterious skill that many improvisers go looking for to add surprise (or shock) to their solos. One fairly easy approach to playing outside is called side slipping or side stepping and that is what I am going to go over in this lesson.
How to play outside is a question of choosing material that is away from what you are playing over and also working on good ways to get outside and to get back inside in a melodic way. Sideslipping is a great approach for more melodic outside ideas.

In this lesson I unravel the mystery of playing "outside" without sounding like you made a mistake or got lost in the changes. Now, if you are new to jazz and have no clue what playing "outside" is, let me just briefly sum it up as temporarily improvising over different chord changes other than those written, in order to purposefully create a strong sense of tension and dissonance. In this video you will learn all about "side slipping" using regular scales, as well as pentatonics.
You hear this concept in the playing of many post bop jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, later Miles Davis recordings, Herbie Hancock and of course guitarists such as John Scofield and Pat Metheny. But if you're still not sure what I'm referring to, in the video I solo over the changes to "How High The Moon" so you can hear me use a variety of outside concepts. After that I show you some of these concepts and give you some tips on how you can convincingly play outside over any II-V-I progression!

What's going on, everybody? Peter Martin here, for Two Minute Jazz Piano. I wanna talk to you today about playing outside.
So, (jazz piano) normally when we talk about playing outside, we just mean shifting harmonically from what the actual chord we're
on for a little bit of time when we're not supposed to be changing the chord. But we use that other harmonic area to build our melodic ideas off of.
If we look at D Minor, (jazz piano) we're just, you know, we're
kinda sitting there, right? (jazz piano)
It's kinda obvious at a certain point, I'm leaving D Minor. Now, you know, Dorian, it's all white keys so you can tell when I'm
doing it visually, too, 'cause I'm going up to non-white keys, but the sorta obvious place that we go is a half step up, which works nice (jazz piano) so we can kinda shift up there at any time.
But I want you to think about some other areas to go outside, as well. (jazz piano) And these are, they can really be almost anywhere. We're thinking more in terms of triadic pattern. So D Minor but I'm going up to (jazz piano). E, E Triad.
And then E flat, major triad.
And even D triad, even though we're going to D Minor.
Then I'm going to B triad.
And you hear I'm doing, as opposed to a straight triad, (jazz piano) 'cause it gets a little bit basic, I'm adding in that fourth kind
of as a melodic passing note.
(jazz piano) right? (jazz piano)
You know, you do that if you like the sound. (jazz piano)
And then, you know, in terms of your comping, you probably notice sometimes I'm really sticking straight with what I'm doing melodically with my comping. (jazz piano)
But these voicings are actually, those are a fourth, but, you can also play things that move in the same direction with the pattern that you're doing when you're playing outside.
(jazz piano) that are not actually the chords for what you're playing.
What I did there was (jazz piano), that kinda matches but
then I went (jazz piano).
I'm still doing the major, (jazz piano) moving chromatically but I'm
taking that fourth voicing and moving it chromatically, as well.
(jazz piano)
And the whole thing, remember playing outside, you're shifting, you're going somewhere else and then you're coming back. You can't play on the chord and then leave the chord and stay away because then you're outside forever.
You gotta bring it back home at some point. Happy practicing.

Outside (Staind song)
"Outside" is a single by the alternative metal band Staind. It is the second single released off their 2001 album Break the Cycle.
Background
"Outside" was originally performed live during the 1999 Family Values Tour in Biloxi, Mississippi, with Aaron Lewis (vocals/guitar) on the stage by himself and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst providing backing vocals. Lewis was asked to perform a song solo and he decided at the last moment to play a song he had been working on since the early days of Staind. He finished the lyrics to "Outside" on the spot while singing the song live.
"It's really an accidental phenomenon," Lewis explains. "I've been playing it for quite some time. In the early days of the band, any money we made went back into the band, so two or three times a week I played acoustically to make money to live off. 'Outside' was one of the songs I played, but it wasn't really finished, so I made up different words every time. We almost put it on Dysfunction. Then, one night on the Family Values Tour, ten minutes before going onstage, we decided to do it. There was never any thought of releasing it this way."

Outside (jazz)
In jazz improvisation, outside playing, describes an approach where one plays over a scale, mode or chord that is harmonically distant from the given chord. There are several common techniques to playing outside, that include side-stepping or side-slipping, superimposition of Coltrane changes, and polytonality.
Side-slipping
The term side-slipping or side-stepping has been used to describe several similar yet distinct methods of playing outside. In one version, one plays only the five "'wrong'" non-scale notes for the given chord and none of the seven scale or three to four chord tones, given that there are twelve notes in the equal tempered scale and heptatonic scales are generally used. Another technique described as sideslipping is the addition of distant ii-V relationships, such as a half-step above the original ii-V. This increases chromatic tension as it first moves away and then towards the tonic. Lastly, side-slipping can be described as playing in a scale a half-step above or below a given chord, before resolving, creating tension and release.

Outside (David Bowie album)
Outside (sometimes referred to as 1.Outside) is a concept album first released 26 September 1995 by David Bowie on Virgin Records, and Bowie's nineteenth studio album. The album was Bowie's reunion with Brian Eno, whom Bowie had worked with most famously on his Berlin Trilogy in the 1970s. Subtitled "the Ritual Art-Murder of Baby Grace Blue: A non-linear Gothic Drama Hyper-Cycle", Outside centres on the characters of a dystopian world on the eve of the 21st century. The album put Bowie back into the mainstream scene of rock music with its singles "The Hearts Filthy Lesson", "Strangers When We Meet", and "Hallo Spaceboy" (remixed by the Pet Shop Boys).

Open Season (film series)
The Open Season franchise from Sony Pictures Animation consists of three films: Open Season (2006), Open Season 2 (2008), and Open Season 3 (2010), along with a short film Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run (2007). A fourth film, titled Open Season: Scared Silly, is set to be released on home media in 2016.

In the tranquil town of Timberline, a 900-pound grizzly bear named Boog has his perfect world turned upside down after he meets Elliot, a one-antlered mule deer. After Elliot messes up Boog's nature show, they end up tranquilized by Boog's owner Ranger Beth and then her friend Sheriff Gordy tells her to release them into the Timberline National Forest before open season for only 3 days. But when hunting season comes, it's up to Boog and Elliot to rally all the other forest animals and turn the tables on the hunters. In the end, Boog decides to stay in the forest and says goodbye to Beth (who came back to take Boog home).

Eso-Charis
Eso-Charis was a Christian Mathcore band formed in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Founding members, brothers Cory Brandan Putman and Matthew Putman, and Arthur Green, eventually went on to join the band Living Sacrifice. Eso-Charis was originally called Elliot. In late 1997, the band recorded their first and only full-length album with Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice. The album was first produced independently, but was after leased to Day-Glo Records of Stockholm, Sweden. Later on, production of the album moved to Solid State Records, the same label as Living Sacrifice. Cory has stated that they most likely will not do a reunion. He also stated that after his brother and Green quit the band they added two guitarists, bassists, and drummers, with Cory and Jayson being the vocalists.

Playing outside is a mysterious skill that many improvisers go looking for to add surprise (or shock) to their solos. One fairly easy approach to playing outside is called side slipping or side stepping and that is what I am going to go over in this lesson. How to play outside is a question of choosing material that is away from what you are playing over and also working on good ways to get outside and to get back inside in a melodic way. Playing outside is a mysterious skill that many improvisers go looking for to add surprise (or shock) to their solos. One fairly easy approach to playing outside is called side slipping or side stepping and that is what I am going to go over in this lesson.
How to play outside is a question of choosing material that is away from what you are playing over and also working on good ways to get outside and to get back inside in a melodic way. Sideslipping is a great approach for more melodic outside ideas.

In this lesson I unravel the mystery of playing "outside" without sounding like you made a mistake or got lost in the changes. Now, if you are new to jazz and have no clue what playing "outside" is, let me just briefly sum it up as temporarily improvising over different chord changes other than those written, in order to purposefully create a strong sense of tension and dissonance. In this video you will learn all about "side slipping" using regular scales, as well as pentatonics.
You hear this concept in the playing of many post bop jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, later Miles Davis recordings, Herbie Hancock and of course guitarists such as John Scofield and Pat Metheny. But if you're still not sure what I'm referring to, in the video I solo over the changes to "How High The Moon" so you can hear me use a variety of outside concepts. After that I show you some of these concepts and give you some tips on how you can convincingly play outside over any II-V-I progression!

What's going on, everybody? Peter Martin here, for Two Minute Jazz Piano. I wanna talk to you today about playing outside.
So, (jazz piano) normally when we talk about playing outside, we just mean shifting harmonically from what the actual chord we're
on for a little bit of time when we're not supposed to be changing the chord. But we use that other harmonic area to build our melodic ideas off of.
If we look at D Minor, (jazz piano) we're just, you know, we're
kinda sitting there, right? (jazz piano)
It's kinda obvious at a certain point, I'm leaving D Minor. Now, you know, Dorian, it's all white keys so you can tell when I'm
doing it visually, too, 'cause I'm going up to non-white keys, but the sorta obvious place that we go is a half step up, which works nice (jazz piano) so we can kinda shift up there at any time.
But I want you to think about some other areas to go outside, as well. (jazz piano) And these are, they can really be almost anywhere. We're thinking more in terms of triadic pattern. So D Minor but I'm going up to (jazz piano). E, E Triad.
And then E flat, major triad.
And even D triad, even though we're going to D Minor.
Then I'm going to B triad.
And you hear I'm doing, as opposed to a straight triad, (jazz piano) 'cause it gets a little bit basic, I'm adding in that fourth kind
of as a melodic passing note.
(jazz piano) right? (jazz piano)
You know, you do that if you like the sound. (jazz piano)
And then, you know, in terms of your comping, you probably notice sometimes I'm really sticking straight with what I'm doing melodically with my comping. (jazz piano)
But these voicings are actually, those are a fourth, but, you can also play things that move in the same direction with the pattern that you're doing when you're playing outside.
(jazz piano) that are not actually the chords for what you're playing.
What I did there was (jazz piano), that kinda matches but
then I went (jazz piano).
I'm still doing the major, (jazz piano) moving chromatically but I'm
taking that fourth voicing and moving it chromatically, as well.
(jazz piano)
And the whole thing, remember playing outside, you're shifting, you're going somewhere else and then you're coming back. You can't play on the chord and then leave the chord and stay away because then you're outside forever.
You gotta bring it back home at some point. Happy practicing.

This lesson will be a part of a bigger chunk of lessons, all about the 3 finger motor system. Each lesson will introduce new applications - because it happens that we can use the 3 finger motor system in many different contexts when playing a Jazz solo... This is the very first lesson though - but as soon as the next lesson joins I'll create a playlist and paste a link right here!!! The playlist will grow gradually as we move along...

Playing outside is a mysterious skill that many improvisers go looking for to add surprise (or shock) to their solos. One fairly easy approach to playing outside is called side slipping or side stepping and that is what I am going to go over in this lesson.
How to play outside is a question of choosing material that is away from what you are playing over and also working on good ways to get outside and to get back inside in a melodic way. Sideslipping is a great approach for more melodic outside ideas.

In this lesson I unravel the mystery of playing "outside" without sounding like you made a mistake or got lost in the changes. Now, if you are new to jazz and have no clue what playing "outside" is, let me just briefly sum it up as temporarily improvising over different chord changes other than those written, in order to purposefully create a strong sense of tension and dissonance. In this video you will learn all about "side slipping" using regular scales, as well as pentatonics.
You hear this concept in the playing of many post bop jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, later Miles Davis recordings, Herbie Hancock and of course guitarists such as John Scofield and Pat Metheny. But if you're still not sure what I'm referring to, in the video I solo over the changes to "How High The Moon" so you can hear me use a variety of outside concepts. After that I show you some of these concepts and give you some tips on how you can convincingly play outside over any II-V-I progression!

What's going on, everybody? Peter Martin here, for Two Minute Jazz Piano. I wanna talk to you today about playing outside.
So, (jazz piano) normally when we talk about playing outside, we just mean shifting harmonically from what the actual chord we're
on for a little bit of time when we're not supposed to be changing the chord. But we use that other harmonic area to build our melodic ideas off of.
If we look at D Minor, (jazz piano) we're just, you know, we're
kinda sitting there, right? (jazz piano)
It's kinda obvious at a certain point, I'm leaving D Minor. Now, you know, Dorian, it's all white keys so you can tell when I'm
doing it visually, too, 'cause I'm going up to non-white keys, but the sorta obvious place that we go is a half step up, which works nice (jazz piano) so we can kinda shift up there at any time.
But I want you to think about some other areas to go outside, as well. (jazz piano) And these are, they can really be almost anywhere. We're thinking more in terms of triadic pattern. So D Minor but I'm going up to (jazz piano). E, E Triad.
And then E flat, major triad.
And even D triad, even though we're going to D Minor.
Then I'm going to B triad.
And you hear I'm doing, as opposed to a straight triad, (jazz piano) 'cause it gets a little bit basic, I'm adding in that fourth kind
of as a melodic passing note.
(jazz piano) right? (jazz piano)
You know, you do that if you like the sound. (jazz piano)
And then, you know, in terms of your comping, you probably notice sometimes I'm really sticking straight with what I'm doing melodically with my comping. (jazz piano)
But these voicings are actually, those are a fourth, but, you can also play things that move in the same direction with the pattern that you're doing when you're playing outside.
(jazz piano) that are not actually the chords for what you're playing.
What I did there was (jazz piano), that kinda matches but
then I went (jazz piano).
I'm still doing the major, (jazz piano) moving chromatically but I'm
taking that fourth voicing and moving it chromatically, as well.
(jazz piano)
And the whole thing, remember playing outside, you're shifting, you're going somewhere else and then you're coming back. You can't play on the chord and then leave the chord and stay away because then you're outside forever.
You gotta bring it back home at some point. Happy practicing.

We'll create thrilling Jazz Piano Improvisation by ZAPPING "in & out" of the main tonality. We'll use only the first 3 and strongest fingers. In that way we make our musical playground more simple and easy. Simple Music is often the best Music!!!
This lesson will be a part of a bigger chunk of lessons, all about the 3 finger motor system. Each lesson will introduce new applications - because it happens that we can use the 3 finger motor system in many different contexts when playing a Jazz solo... Outside (Staind song)
"Outside" is a single by the alternative metal band Staind. It is the second single released off their 2001 album Break the Cycle.
Background
"Outside" was originally performed live during the 1999 Family Values Tour in Biloxi, Mississippi, with Aaron Lewis (vocals/guitar) on the stage by himself and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst providing backing vocals. Lewis was asked to perform a song solo and he decided at the last moment to play a song he had been working on since the early days of Staind. He finished the lyrics to "Outside" on the spot while singing the song live.
"It's really an accidental phenomenon," Lewis explains. "I've been playing it for quite some time. In the early days of the band, any money we made went back into the band, so two or three times a week I played acoustically to make money to live off. 'Outside' was one of the songs I played, but it wasn't really finished, so I made up different words every time. We almost put it on Dysfunction. Then, one night on the Family Values Tour, ten minutes before going onstage, we decided to do it. There was never any thought of releasing it this way."
