General practitioners are medical doctors whose job it is to diagnose, treat, and help prevent injuries and diseases that commonly occur within the general population. The occupational tasks of a general practitioner are to prescribe or administer treatment, medication, vaccinations, as well as ordering and interpreting tests, and analyzing patient records.

General practitioners may also deliver babies, refer patients to specialists, give advice to clients about overall health including but not limited to diet and disease prevention. General practitioners also may operate on their patients if needed.

They may also prepare organizational reports with statistical data representing the death, birth and disease rates of individuals. They may also do this same type of work for governmental agencies.

General practitioners work in close contact with other members of the health care community, such as nurses, therapists, specialists, pharmacists, radiology technicians, radiologists and others. They also train residents, medical students and others.
