Griffith Area

Even though it may not be the capital city, the city of Griffith does have something in common with Canberra. The same person designed both of these cities: Walter Burley Griffin. Located in the south-western region of New South Wales, Griffith, however, is much younger than Canberra, only being proclaimed in 1987.

The city of Griffith is so new that it did not receive its first traffic light until February of 2010. Even though this town may be in its earliest stages, it already has a population of approximately 17,000 people. While a large portion of the residents claim Australian ancestry, this region has strong Italian influences, as many Italian workers populated this area in past decades.

Australian farmers often employed these Italian workers, as this area did and continues to have some of the most productive farmland in all of Australia. Griffith continues to be associated with the production of great wine and produce.
