Tonality is a system of music in which specific hierarchical pitch relationships are based on a key "center", or tonic. The term tonalité originated with Alexandre-Étienne Choron (1810) and was borrowed by François-Joseph Fétis in 1840 (Reti, 1958; Simms 1975, 119; Judd, 1998; Dahlhaus 1990). Although Fétis used it as a general term for a system of musical organization and spoke of types de tonalités rather than a single system, today the term is most often used to refer to Major-Minor tonality (also called diatonic tonality, common practice tonality, or functional tonality), the system of musical organization of the common practice period, and of Western-influenced popular music throughout much of the world today.
The tonal system prevalent in what we know as the common-practice period is usually known as major-minor, or functional tonality. In functional tonality, chords have a harmonic or tonal function, which we can define as the relationship of a chord with the other chords in the key, and especially its relationship with the tonic. We usually label the specific functions of chords with Roman numerals. The basic harmonic functions are tonic (I), dominant (V), and predominant (IV).

Robert "Bob" Luther Gauldin (born 1931) is an American composer and Professor Emeritus of Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music.
Gauldin's compositions include works for wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, and chorus. He also received a Ford Foundation Grant for the Contemporary Music Project pilot program at Eastman from 1966 to 1968. As a theorist, Gauldin has published a number of articles and three widely used textbooks, and has presented numerous papers at conventions and universities in both the United States and England. He has served as reviewer and adviser for several publishers, including the Yale University Press and Prentice-Hall, and has served on various boards and committees for music theory societies, including a federal committee chosen to select summer seminars in music for the National Endowment for the Humanities (1981–1982). He was a charter member of the Society for Music Theory and served as its vice president and president (1988–1992). Gauldin retired in 1997 after 34 years of service to the School but continues to be an active member of the Eastman community. In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions, the theory department established the Gauldin Acquisition Fund for Rare Books in Music Theory for the Sibley Music Library, with an initial focus on counterpoint treatises and Wagnerian studies.

Q: I'm studying scale shapes, arpeggios and groups of new chords. I want to be able to solo and play rhythm guitar better. Since studying all these shapes, I've noticed that there are areas in them that will duplicate within other shapes. How can I start to view all this so that I could get to know these similar structures, and make this information more visual and useable on my guitar? Thanks!

A: As we develop; chords, scales, arpeggios and intervals on the fingerboard, we slowly start to see how similarities exist across the span of the neck with our fingering patterns. Unfortunately, while most guitar students may acknowledge this, it is seldom pursued as a course of further study. This idea of visual pattern awareness, can help us to build a much faster fret-board awareness. All we need to do, is be on the look-out for connections through the dozens and dozens of similar visualized tonal patterns on the neck. Analyze the examples in this lesson and keep a sharp eye out for all of the connections you'll notice in the future. Just being aware of this concept can end up saving a lot of time and effort when studying the guitar neck.

*The more I learn about music and the theory behind it... the more confusing it becomes?
It seems to be so simplistically simple to write a tune and yet so confusingly complicated... The theory behind chord progressions is childishly simple and yet bending/breaking the theoretical rules ends up creating unique sounds. Chord patterns are simple mathematical spacings on the keys of a defined scale and yet if you break this pattern the same thing occurs. The hard part seems to be to actually train the fingers to know and react to what the brain somehow comprehends on a basic level... The simple chords are just that... relatively simple, the variations are a bit more complex to master fingerwise. All the concepts of music seem mathematically structured, it is the manual dexterity and speed that must be mastered in order to play.... Arpeggio patterns are a hard thing to master also... I am dreading even trying to master reading sheet music, it appears so vast and daunting!!!!

Chord patterns are simple mathematical spacings on the keys of a defined scale and yet if you break this pattern the same thing occurs. The hard part seems to be to actually train the fingers to know and react to what the brain somehow comprehends on a basic level... The simple chords are just that... relatively simple, the variations are a bit more complex to master fingerwise. All the concepts of music seem mathematically structured, it is the manual dexterity and speed that must be mastered in order to play.... Arpeggio patterns are a hard thing to master also... I am dreading even trying to master reading sheet music, it appears so vast and daunting!!!!

Since studying all these shapes, I've noticed that there are areas in them that will duplicate within other shapes. How can I start to view all this so that I could get to know these similar structures, and make this information more visual and useable on my guitar? Thanks! Clark - Union City, NJ. USA A: As we develop; chords, scales, arpeggios and intervals on the fingerboard, we slowly start to see how similarities exist across the span of the neck with our fingering patterns. Unfortunately, while most guitar students may acknowledge this, it is seldom pursued as a course of further study. This idea of visual pattern awareness, can help us to build a much faster fret-board awareness. All we need to do, is be on the look-out for connections through the dozens and dozens of similar visualized tonal patterns on the neck. Analyze the examples in this lesson and keep a sharp eye out for all of the connections you'll notice in the future. Just being aware of this concept can end up saving a lot of time and effort when studying the guitar neck. Definitive shift in musical tonal centering.... not sure what is happening?
Same chord progression as the previous one (the one that was supposed to be in G major) --- meshed with a public domain tunes chordal pattern (definitely in C major) and it doesn't clash for some reason so there was certainly a shift of some nature (just have no idea how or why it did this??) Several pentatonic scales seem to fit the chord progress also one in minor??? I cannot fathom what is taking place here, according to what I have read so far it doesn't make any sense to me. How can one chord progression sustain the ability to handle several keys/scales???? And it's not even a natural chord progression... *The more I learn about music and the theory behind it... the more confusing it becomes? It seems to be so simplistically simple to write a tune and yet so confusingly complicated... The theory behind chord progressions is childishly simple and yet bending/breaking the theoretical rules ends up creating unique sounds. Chord patterns are simple mathematical spacings on the keys of a defined scale and yet if you break this pattern the same thing occurs. The hard part seems to be to actually train the fingers to know and react to what the brain somehow comprehends on a basic level... The simple chords are just that... relatively simple, the variations are a bit more complex to master fingerwise. All the concepts of music seem mathematically structured, it is the manual dexterity and speed that must be mastered in order to play.... Arpeggio patterns are a hard thing to master also... I am dreading even trying to master reading sheet music, it appears so vast and daunting!!!!- published: 31 Dec 2014
