Dohuk
Dohuk (Kurdish: دهۆک, Dihok; Syriac: ܢܘܗܕܪܐ Nohadrā; Arabic: دهوك Dahūk) is the capital of Dohuk Governorate in Kurdistan and part of Iraqi Kurdistan, with a population of approximately 350,000 inhabitants, consisting mostly of Kurds, with a significant Assyrian population. The city is encircled by mountains along the Tigris river. Dohuk has a growing tourist industry. Its population has increased rapidly since the 1990s, as the rural population moved to the cities. The University of Dohuk, founded in 1992, is a renowned center for teaching and research.
History
Throughout history to the present time, Duhok has acquired a strategic position historically and geographically. Between the 25th and 22nd century BC, it changed hands between the Akkadians, Sumerians, Assyrians, Amorites, Gutians, Hurrians and Hattians, before becoming an integral part of Assyria from the mid 21st century BC until the dissolution of Assyria (then known as Athura/Assuristan) in the mid 7th century AD after the Arab Islamic Conquest.

American University (AU or American) is a private research university in Washington, D.C., United States, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, although the university's curriculum is secular. The university was chartered by an Act of Congress on February 24, 1893 as "The American University," when the bill was approved by President Benjamin Harrison.
AU was named the most politically active school in the nation in The Princeton Review's annual survey of college students in 2008, 2010, and 2012. The university has six schools, including the School of International Service (SIS), currently ranked 8th in the world for its graduate programs and 9th in the world for its undergraduate program in International Affairs by Foreign Policy, and the Washington College of Law. As of 2016, roughly 7,710 undergraduate students and 5,230 graduate students are currently enrolled.
A member of the Division I Patriot League, its sports teams compete as the American University Eagles.

The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

Iraqi Kurdistan
Iraqi Kurdistan, officially known as the Kurdistan Region (Central Kurdish: ههرێمی کوردستان, translit. Herêmî Kurdistan; Arabic: إقليم كردستان, translit. Iqlīm Kurdistān), is located in the north of Iraq and constitutes the country's only autonomous region. Bordering the Kurdish-inhabited regions of Iran to the east, Turkey to the north, and Syria to the west, it is frequently referred to as Southern Kurdistan (Central Kurdish: باشووری کوردستان; Northern Kurdish: Başûrê Kurdistanê). The region is officially governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), with the capital being Erbil.
Kurdistan is a parliamentary democracy with a regional assembly that consists of 111 seats.Masoud Barzani, who was initially elected as president in 2005, was re-elected in 2009. In August 2013 the parliament extended his presidency for another two years. His presidency concluded on 19 August 2015 after the political parties failed to reach an agreement over extending his presidency term. The new Iraqi constitution defines the Kurdistan Region as a federal entity of Iraq, and establishes Kurdish and Arabic as Iraq's joint official languages. The four governorates of Duhok, Hawler, Silemani, and Halabja comprise around 41,710 square kilometres (16,100 sq mi) and have a population of 8.35 million (2013 estimate). In 2014, during the 2014 Iraq Crisis, Iraqi Kurdistan's forces also took over much of the disputed territories of Northern Iraq.

LEADIN Life for those living in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region is carrying on as usual despite the intensifying violence elsewhere. The city of Dohuk is on the border with Turkey, but for one family even the worsening conflict in the south cannot dampen their preparations for a local wedding. STORYLINE: Nashwa Zayto and her mother are shopping, buying gifts for the dowry for her sister's upcoming wedding. Picking out sugar pots, it's just another day for the two women in Dohuk, a city in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region. As other parts of the country descend into chaos, this city of one million people is an oasis of relative calm and stability. Many residents here say their lives have not been that affected by the conflict. "We are fine and feel very safe here," says Nashwa Zaytoh. "But we feel sorry for the people in other areas of Iraq because of the situation." In the last week parts of Iraq have been overrun by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as it fights a fierce territorial battle with government troops. Hundreds of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands more have fled Iraq's northern cities as the group vows to take their fight to Baghdad. Although Iraq's second city Mosul is currently in ISIL control, and lies only 60 kms (37 miles) away from Dohuk, it's business as usual in one of the city's main shopping streets, Bazaar-e Gulan. Shopkeeper Ashty Shafeeg says his business hasn't seen a dip in trade. "For now, Duhok is safe. We haven't closed our shops, we can visit our families without any problems." Iraq's Kurds run the autonomous region in northern Iraq but even they are now involved in the crisis, and are protecting the eastern city of Kirkuk. Still, Shafeeg credits the Kurdistan Regional Government's leadership with making him feel safe. "It's all about our president, Massoud Barzani. We respect him and love him and he in turn protects us and our families," he explains. Despite not getting involved in Iraq's sectarian troubles over the last decade, and enjoying relative autonomy from Iraq's central government, ISIL are an unknown quantity. As such, the Kurdish government is taking no chances. The peshmerga,or Kurdish armed forces, have formed a perimeter along their region's border with ISIL controlled territories estimated to be some 1,000km (620 miles) long. But locals drinking in one of the city's many tea houses don't seem worried. Taher Rasheed has a son in the army in Western Iraq. "My son is a soldier and is in Rabia. There's no war there, the peshmerga control everything, even the borders." Should anything change, he says the army are prepared to fight. "But if the Daash (ISIL) attack them, they will attack back and fight for our land." For now, Dohuk remains open for business. Its president says that the institution will provide an inclusive education to combat extremism.

The new building of the American University Dohuk Kurdistan is now open.
The institution has been operating since 2014, but construction of the main facility, named after the late Kurdish nationalist Mustafa Barzani, father of the current president,
has recently been completed.
The area of approximately 30,000 square-metre (322,917 square-feet) can accommodate 3,000 students.
Graduates are particularly proud of the new campus.
"I am a student in the American University and this is very important for me because I am a graduate student and this is my first year and I am really, really, I'm happy because as a student I could not go to America to study. But because I'm living in Dohuk, I have a great university such as (the) American University of Kurdistan and this is a pleasure and I really appreciate it that they did for me and this day is a really, really blessing day," says student Pel Fadl.

Life for those living in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region is carrying on as usual despite the intensifying violence elsewhere.
The city of Dohuk is on the border with Turkey, but for one family even the worsening conflict in the south cannot dampen their preparations for a local wedding.
STORYLINE:
Nashwa Zayto and her mother are shopping, buying gifts for the dowry for her sister's upcoming wedding.
Picking out sugar pots, it's just another day for the two women in Dohuk, a city in Iraq's Northern Kurdish region.
As other parts of the country descend into chaos, this city of one million people is an oasis of relative calm and stability.
Many residents here say their lives have not been that affected by the conflict.
"We are fine and feel very safe here," says Nashwa Zaytoh.
"But we feel sorry for the people in other areas of Iraq because of the situation."
In the last week parts of Iraq have been overrun by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as it fights a fierce territorial battle with government troops.
Hundreds of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands more have fled Iraq's northern cities as the group vows to take their fight to Baghdad.
Although Iraq's second city Mosul is currently in ISIL control, and lies only 60 kms (37 miles) away from Dohuk, it's business as usual in one of the city's main shopping streets, Bazaar-e Gulan.
Shopkeeper Ashty Shafeeg says his business hasn't seen a dip in trade.
"For now, Duhok is safe. We haven't closed our shops, we can visit our families without any problems."
Iraq's Kurds run the autonomous region in northern Iraq but even they are now involved in the crisis, and are protecting the eastern city of Kirkuk.
Still, Shafeeg credits the Kurdistan Regional Government's leadership with making him feel safe.
"It's all about our president, Massoud Barzani. We respect him and love him and he in turn protects us and our families," he explains.
Despite not getting involved in Iraq's sectarian troubles over the last decade, and enjoying relative autonomy from Iraq's central government, ISIL are an unknown quantity.
As such, the Kurdish government is taking no chances.
The peshmerga,or Kurdish armed forces, have formed a perimeter along their region's border with ISIL controlled territories estimated to be some 1,000km (620 miles) long.
But locals drinking in one of the city's many tea houses don't seem worried.
Taher Rasheed has a son in the army in Western Iraq.
"My son is a soldier and is in Rabia. There's no war there, the peshmerga control everything, even the borders."
Should anything change, he says the army are prepared to fight.
"But if the Daash (ISIL) attack them, they will attack back and fight for our land."
For now, Dohuk remains open for business.

The purpose of this trip was to journey into the deepest corners of Iraq where the oldest monotheistic religion in the world, the Yazidi people are currently exiled in large populations outside of from their homes and villages in refugee camps after fleeing for their lives from the enslavement, genocide and torture at the hands of ISIS extremist.
I hope you enjoy this series. My intention as a filmmaker has never been to exploit anyone for the purpose of entertainment but to inform and show the public the urgent need for recognition needed by these people from the Global Community. I believe this journey and series will however make you laugh, cry, and ideally see the beauty of a people who have lost everything and been through things unimaginable and yet they maintained their dignity are fighting for their lost brothers and sisters and seeking recognition by the United Nations for peace, protection and their homes back.
I hope you are inspired.

Getting There: Iraqi Kurdistan has two international airports, Erbil and Sulaimany. Currently there are direct international flights from Kurdistan to Dubai, Amman, Beirut and Frankfort.
There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.
Getting Around Iraqi Kurdistan: Taxi, Bus, and Private Car Hire. If you are mainly interested in staying in a city, taxi is reliable and good value for money. An average charge within a city drive is 2 dollers, as for the Bus it is definitely cheaper. To hire a car with or without driver could be the option for you. You can have your own chauffeur at your disposal throughout your stay. This will offer you the choice to travel short or long distances. A local driver has the knowledge and will advise you throughout your visit.
Where to Visit
Erbil city is the capital of Kurdistan Region Government, the oldest city with continuous residentially. This city is regarded as one of the most deep-rooted Governorate in the area, its history begins before A.D. The city was established 6000 prior to A.D. The name of Erbil city has been found in the Somarian transcripts. The city was the main station for The God Ashtar which was the main goddess which was worshiped at that era. The city is a key element for eastern part and Kurdistan Region defining. Geographical Data: Erbil city is located east to Sulaymanyah Governorate and it is only 350 km from Baghdad. The city is surrounded by Nineveh from west and Kirkuk city from east and Iran and Turkey from North. There are two Museum, Erbil citadel museum, which is located in the citadel. It contains about 40 antique parts and anc-ient heritages. The second one is Erbil museum which includes about 5000 ancient parts, which deep-rooted in the history.
Sulaimani City, One of the major cities in both Kurdistan region and Iraq, situated 385 Km north Baghdad and 198 Km north east Erbil the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The city sits between two chains of mountains (Goyzha & Glazarda), The city was founded by Ibrahim Pasha in the year 1784. Today Sulaimani has developed in most modern life aspects, hotels, motels, supermarkets & Malls, theatres, restaurants & Parks. From the cultural perspective, Sulaimani is considered to be the capital of Kurdish culture, the famous old Saray situates at the center of the city, while many museums are distributed. Sulaimani Embrace several universities & Educational Institutions both Public & Private, in addition to the American University.
Duhok City is the center of Duhok prefecture (governorate) one of main cities in Kurdistan Region. It situates north Iraq, close to both Syrian & Turkish borders. Duhok city is on plane ground between 2 mountain chains, Shandukha from the south and Spi from the north, while mountain Seen stands on the east. On the west side a plane area could be seen with a tourism environment. The majority of citizens are Kurds; they live peacefully with Chaldean, Assyrian, Armenian and Yazidi minorities. Duhok city is famous with historical sites in which sculptures could be seen on the rocks. Yazidic cultural museum, playground for kids, small zoo. The city embraces Duhok University and many cultural centers. Some most important tourist sites inside the city include Masjed Haj Ahmad considered to be the the biggest Masjed of Duhok and Mart Alaha Church the oldest church in Duhok
Kalar, is the administrative center of Garmyan district. It lies 140 Km southeast of Sulaimani prefecture and 30 Km from the Iranian border. Kalar consists of 27 quarters of a population of about 250,000 residents. Kalar is located on a large plain area embracing many historical sites related to different periods; BC, AD, and Islamic periods. Shirwana Citadel, Pasha Citadel and Christian Canal are examples of AD historical sites. In winter, temperatures may reach 2˚C.

With a population of 5.2 million and increasing, the three governorates of Erbil, Slemani, and Duhok cover approximately 40.000 square kilometers - larger than the Netherlands and four times the area of Lebanon. This includes the governorates administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government but does not include the disputed areas of Kurdistan outside of KRG administration, such as Kirkuk.
• The Region is geographically diverse, from hot and dry plains to cooler mountainous areas with natural springs and snowfall in the winter.
• Foreign visitors are warmly welcomed. Among the growing number of visitors are international media and business people as well as those returning from the Kurdish diaspora.
• The capital and the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government is Erbil, a city known in Kurdish as Hawler. The Citadel in Erbil is considered the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement. The next largest cities are Slemani and Duhok. Please note that Slemani is the KRG’s official English spelling, but it can also be found with other spellings such as Sulaimani, Suleimani, Sulaimaniyah, and Suleimaniah.
• The Kurdistan Regional Government exercises executive power according to the Kurdistan Region’s laws as enacted by the democratically elected Kurdistan Parliament. Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani leads the current government.
• Iraq’s Constitution recognizes the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Kurdistan Parliament as the region’s formal institutions and the Peshmerga forces as the Region’s legitimate security guard.
• The current coalition government consists of several political parties that reflect the diversity of the Region’s population, which includes Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs, Turkmen, Yazidis, Arabs and Kurds living together in harmony.
• More than 65% of destroyed villages have been rebuilt since being razed during the Anfal campaign perpetrated by Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s.
• The Kurdish language is of Indo-European origin and is among the family of Iranian languages, such as Persian and Pashto, and is distinct from Arabic. The two main dialects are Sorani and Kurmanji.
• The Kurdistan Region has eleven public universities and several licensed private universities. Some of them use English as the main language of teaching and examination, most notably the University of Kurdistan Hawler (UKH) and the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUIS).
• A new, liberal foreign investment law was ratified in June 2006, providing incentives for foreign investors such as the possibility of owning land, up to ten-year tax holidays, and easy repatriation of profits.
• To rapidly benefit from its oil and gas resources, the KRG has signed dozens of production sharing contracts with companies from several countries.
• The Kurdistan Region has international airports in Erbil and Slemani, with direct flights to and from Europe and the Middle East. A new international airport is under construction in Duhok.

The proposal has been accepted by authorities and the project kicked off in Jan 2013
