Artists' books are works of art that utilize the form of the book. They are often published in small editions, though they are sometimes produced as one-of-a-kind objects.
Artists' books have employed a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs, concertinas or loose items contained in a box. Artists have been active in printing and book production for centuries, but the artist's book is primarily a late 20th-century form with roots in earlier avant-garde movements, such as Dada, Constructivism, Futurism, and Fluxus.
"Artists' books are books or book-like objects over the final appearance of which an artist has had a high degree of control; where the book is intended as a work of art in itself." Stephen Bury
Artists' books are made for a variety of reasons. They are often created to make art that is interactive, portable, movable and easily shared. Many artists books challenge the conventional book format and become sculptural objects. They may be created in order to make art accessible to people outside of the formal contexts of galleries or museums.

Meet some of the artists who made these very special books on view here—Mark Attwood (South Africa), Toufik Berramdane (Morocco), Atta Kwami (Ghana), Bessie Smith Moulton (USA), Bruce Onobrakpeya (Nigeria), and Robbin Ami Silverberg (USA). On location or via Skype, filmmaker Matthew Morrison lets the artists share with us their bookmaking experiences. Discovering artists’ books first-hand can be a revelation—a “wow” moment as you open the book and turn the page. Several of these special moments are captured on film. The aim of The Economist is "to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress."Subjects covered include international news, economics, politics, business, finance, science, technology, and the arts. The publication is targeted at the high-end "prestige" segment of the market and counts among its audience influential business and government decision-makers. It takes a strongly argued editorial stance on many issues, especially its support for free trade and fiscal conservatism; it can thus be considered as a magazine which practises advocacy journalism. Although The Economist calls itself a newspaper and refers to its staff as correspondents, it is printed in magazine form on glossy paper, like a newsmaga...
Parallel to the exhibition 'Books beyond Artists: Words and Images' Ivorypress hosted on 24 February a panel discussion entitled ‘Artists’ books in the 21st century: cult objects?’, which included the participation of Irma Boom, typographer and graphic designer; Peter Sacks, artist and professor of poetry at Harvard University (USA); Rowan Watson, head of Collections Development in the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, United Kingdom). The discussion was moderated by Elena Ochoa Foster, founder and CEO of Ivorypress.
Hello! First off, I want to apologize for the lighting situation . . . though I knew the light would change, I didn't anticipate just how quickly it was going to change. Also, I am sorry that this video is so long, yet choppy. I did my best to cut out any dead air and unnecessary bits because I tend to ramble when I talk and say "um" a LOT which is very annoying for editing. . . And I'm also very sorry for mispronouncing names. I'm really not good at pronouncing names . . . ugh. I know that $40 (USD . . . not sure what conversions would make this) is kind steep for any kind of book. I always am looking on clearance and on discount websites, but this particular book I could not find other than full price. Also, keep in mind that I don't buy all of these in one swoop. There are proba...
