The Universe is all of time and space and its contents. The Universe includes planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all matter and energy. The observable universe is about 28 billion parsecs (91 billion light-years) in diameter at the present time. The size of the whole Universe is not known and may be either finite or infinite. Observations and the development of physical theories have led to inferences about the composition and evolution of the Universe.

Brian Randolph Greene (born February 9, 1963) is an American theoretical physicist and string theorist. He has been a professor at Columbia University since 1996 and chairman of the World Science Festival since co-founding it in 2008. Greene has worked on mirror symmetry, relating two different Calabi–Yau manifolds (concretely, relating the conifold to one of its orbifolds). He also described the flop transition, a mild form of topology change, showing that topology in string theory can change at the conifold point.
Greene has become known to a wider audience through his books for the general public, The Elegant Universe, Icarus at the Edge of Time, The Fabric of the Cosmos, The Hidden Reality, and related PBS television specials. He also appeared on The Big Bang Theory episode "The Herb Garden Germination", as well as the films Frequency and The Last Mimzy. He is currently a member of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
Greene was born in New York City. His father, Alan Greene, was a one-time vaudeville performer and high school dropout who later worked as a voice coach and composer. He stated in an interview with Lawrence Krauss that he is of Jewish heritage. After attending Stuyvesant High School, Greene entered Harvard in 1980 to concentrate in physics. After completing his bachelor's degree, Greene earned his doctorate from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, graduating in 1987. While at Oxford, Greene also studied piano with the concert pianist Jack Gibbons.

View the full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-many-un... The fact that no one knows the answer to this question is what makes it exciting. The story of physics has been one of an ever-expanding understanding of the sheer scale of reality, to the point where physicists are now postulating that there may be far more universes than just our own. Chris Anderson explores the thrilling implications of this idea. Lesson by Chris Anderson, animation by Andrew Park.
The first evidence of the multiverse has supposedly been found in the past week. Scientists believe that the cold spots found in space could actually be colliding universes. The multiverse hypothesis, suggesting that our universe is but one of perhaps infinitely many, speaks to the very nature of reality. Physicist Brian Greene, cosmologists Alan Guth and Andrei Linde, and philosopher Nick Bostrom discuss and debate this controversial implication of forefront research and explore its potential for redefining the cosmic order. Moderated by Robert Krulwich and featuring an original musical interlude, inspired by parallel worlds, by DJ Spooky. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for all the latest from WSF. There are many different ways a multiverse might exist. Columbia University physicist, and one of the world's leading string field theorists, Brian Greene explains how we might visit another universe. Greene is the co-founder of the World Science Festival, which has a new initiative called "City of Science" which is a 5-event series. The third event will be taking place in Queens on September 25, 2016. All events will take place in one of New York City's five boroughs throughout this fall. "City of Science" is free and open to all New Yorkers of all ages. The stars are not wanted now: put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun; Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood. For nothing now can ever come to any good. An experimental collaboration between three like minded groups. An abstract form explodes into life. Temporarily beautiful. It dissolves into the infinite. Parallel Universes Meet At Infinity is a video installation. It was realized during a two weeks residency at the Springhill Institute (Birmingham) in September 2004. It consisted in the recording of several pieces of footage of the animals at Dunley Zoological Gardens that would be learned by heart by different actors selected out of an audition. The actors perform the same movements than the animals and the same space. The result is a video installation in two channels, one for the animals and one for the actors in which both move synchronized in a difficult choreography.
We see galaxies in the sky, but cannot see the dark matter clumps surrounding them. However, we can simulate them as they form in a model Universe. In this video we show how good the agreement is between the observed distribution of galaxies in the SDSS sky survey, and the predicted distribution of model galaxies associated with dark matter halos in the Bolshoi simulation. It's hard to tell them apart!
Show me what it means
sure i'm dying to know
do i take a hit to the heart
should i let bleeding wounds weep
silhouette a perfect scene
flavour of the month is nothing new to me
and you can always be never too far from me
always on the same page
(im not sure we are)
always on the same page
there goes my baby
she's gotta know
she's gotta know
that when the red lights on there's no one at home x2
pick and pull apart
leaving me split at the seam
im saying if you want blood
you'll never get a drop out of me
what is it you don't understand
showing no proof in your plans now baby
this pain won't end
and this heartache still rises
always on the same page
(im not sure we are)
always on the same page
there goes my baby
she's gotta know
she's gotta know
that when the red lights on there's no one at home
