Vaslav Nijinsky (also Vatslav; Russian: Ва́цлав Фоми́ч Нижи́нский; Russian pronunciation: [ˈvatsləf fəˈmʲitɕ nʲɪˈʐɨnskʲɪj]; Polish: Wacław Niżyński; 12 March 1889/1890 – 8 April 1950) was a Russian ballet dancer and choreographer of Polish descent, cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. He was celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterizations. He could dance en pointe, a rare skill among male dancers at the time and was admired for his seemingly gravity-defying leaps.
Nijinsky was introduced to dance by his parents, who were senior dancers with the travelling Setov opera company, and his early childhood was spent touring with the company. His older brother Stanislav Fomitch and younger sister Bronislava Nijinska also became dancers. At age nine Nijinsky was accepted at the Imperial Ballet School (later known as the Maryinsky School) in St. Petersburg, the pre-eminent ballet school in the world. In 1907 he graduated and became a member of the Imperial Ballet, starting at the rank of coryphée instead of in the corps de ballet, already taking starring roles. His sister Bronia also became a dancer and choreographer, working closely with him for much of his career.

Plot: Paris 1913. Coco Chanel is infatuated with the rich and handsome Boy Capel, but she is also compelled by her work. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is about to be performed. The revolutionary dissonances of Igor's work parallel Coco's radical ideas. She wants to democratize women's fashion; he wants to redefine musical taste. Coco attends the scandalous first performance of The Rite in a chic white dress. The music and ballet are criticized as too modern, too foreign. Coco is moved but Igor is inconsolable. Paris 1920, Coco is newly wealthy and successful but grief-stricken after Boy's death in a car crash. Igor, following the Russian Revolution is now a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris. Coco is introduced to Igor by Diaghilev, impresario of the Ballets Russes. The attraction between them is instant and electric. Coco invites Igor along with his wife - now sick with consumption - together with his four children and a menagerie of birds to stay at her new villa, Bel Respiro, in Garches.

Plot: This minimalist B/W silent short film depicts the last days of the famous film-icon of the 1920's, Rudolph Valentino. Having unsuccessfully undergone an operation to remove appendicitis Valentino develops peritonitis and slips into coma. While in the depths of his subconscious, Valentino has surrealistic visions of the last days of his life. Though he is passionately idolized by millions of women around the world, he is deeply unhappy in his private life. Valentino is deeply and hopelessly in love with his wife, who does not reciprocate his feelings. Though he has been dubbed "The Great Lover" and "The Sheik", he becomes submerged in obscurity and loneliness during his life. As he sees images from his life flash before him, he understands that fate, having given him fame and glory, has also taken from him the dearest and most important things in the life.

Plot: In the spring of 1913, Parisian businessman Gabriel Astruc opens a new theater on the Champs Elysées. The first performance is the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring', danced by the Ballet Russes. The rehearsal process is extremely fraught: the orchestra dislike Stravinsky's harsh, atonal music; the dancers dislike the 'ugly' choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky. The volatile, bisexual Nijinsky is in a strained relationship with the much older Sergei Diaghilev, the Ballet Russes' charismatic but manipulative impresario. Public expectation is extremely high after Nijinsky's success in 'L'apres-midi d'un faune'. Finally, 'The Rite of Spring' premieres to a gossip-loving, febrile, fashion-conscious Parisian audience sharply divided as to its merits.

Plot: The film is based on the biography of the legendary Russian ballerina 'Anna Pavlova (I)' (qv). She became an internationally regarded ballerina after her performances in 1909 with the Dyaghilev's Ballet in Paris and in London. Anna Pavlova eventually formed her own troupe. She made a successful world tour together with Viktor d'Andre, who was her husband and manager.

Plot: Set in the early 1910s at a time of passionate artistic experimentalism, and based on biographical fact, this is the story of Vaslav Nijinsky, the young and brilliant but headstrong premier danseur and aspiring choreographer of the Ballets Russes. The company is managed by the famous Sergei Diaghilev, himself a controlling and fiercely possessive impresario. The increasing tension between these powerful egos, exacerbated by homosexual desire and jealousy, becomes triangular when the young ballerina Romola de Pulsky determinedly attempts to draw the increasingly mentally unstable Nijinsky away from Diaghilev,

Plot: In 1926 the tragic and untimely death of a silent screen actor caused female moviegoers to riot in the streets and in some cases to commit suicide - that actor was Rudolph Valentino. Ballroom dancer Valentino manipulated his good looks and animal-like grace into a Hollywood career. His smouldering love making, tinged with a touch of masterful cruelty, expressed a sexuality which was at once both shocking and sensual.

He was born Vaslav Fomich Nijinsky on December 28, 1889, while his parents were on tour in Kiev, Russian Empire (now Kiev, Ukraine). His father, Foma (Thomas) Lavrentevich Nijinsky, and his mother, Eleonora Bereda, were of Polish-Russian heritage, they were celebrated dancers and had their own touring dance company. His father gave him his first dance lessons. Young Nijinsky made his stage debut at the early age of 5, in 1895, at Christmas pageant show in Nizhni Novgorod, Russia. There he had several stage performances with his little sister, Bronislava Njinska alongside his father and mother. In 1900 Nijinsky was accepted at the Imperial School of Ballet in St. Petersburg on a 7-year scholarship from the State of Ru...
This is probably unique footage of perhaps the greatest Ballets Russes dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky (1888-1950). This legendary dancer is seen here exiting the Sacher Hotel in Vienna and walking down the street with an American reporter. It was shot mid September 1945 at the beginning of the allied occupation by Pathe or Paramount cameramen. Apparently there was also footage of Nijinsky seated with his wife, Romola, in Burggarden and of Nijinsky and one of the reporters walking through a park. This film now seems lost. Enjoy!
These are two fascinating interviews with the daughters of legendary Ballets Russes super star, Vaslav Nijinsky. This first is an interview to camera with Kyra Nijinsky, with the interviewer being none other than and appropriately Dame Margot Fonteyn. The second is a telephone interview with Tamara Nijinsky, conducted by the Los Angeles Times on 3rd November 1994. Here is the transcript of that second interview: Q: What do you remember from the years you lived with your father? A: Basically, I remember that he was a very, very quiet person. I just remember him sitting in an armchair by the mantelpiece, although when we were together he seemed to be always smiling like a delighted little boy and he was happy to see me. There was an understanding smile, although we never talked with wor...

Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978), the legendary prima ballerina of the Ballets Russes, was interviewed by Sir Anton Dolin around 1976 about dancing the title role in 'Giselle' in the Ballets Russes' Paris season of 1910. Her partner was Vaslav Nijinsky. Dolin also spoke with other legendary Giselles, such as Alicia Alonso, Yvette Charivé, Carla Fracci, Tamara Karsavina Natalia Makarova, Dame Alicia Markova, Olga Spessivtzeva and Galina Ulanova, with these interviews all being gathered up into the 1982 Academy Award winning documentary 'A Portrait of Giselle'. The other unique extended interview was with Olga Spessivtzeva, uploaded on this channel as 'Olga Spessivtzeva - In Conversation With Anton Dolin'. I must say apart from everything else I love the sound of Tamara Karsavina's voice -- t...

In 1987, the National Gallery of Australia purchased a costume worn by Vaslav Nijinsky in 'Le Dieu Bleu'. The ballet was choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to music by Reynaldo Hahn and with costumes and sets by Léon Bakst. That the costume was Nijinsky's and that it is genuine seems supported by the dancer's name on the lining and by a customs marks for entry into Germany for the 1912 Ballets Russes tour in that country. As only a few performances of this work were given after its premier in 1912, it can be assumed that this costume was worn only by Nijinsky. What is quite fascinating for me is that there is Dieu Bleu blue body paint on the inner lining of the tunic, make-up that would probably have been transferred from Nijinsky's body during performance. The excellent condition of the...
In an excerpt from a 1979 documentary, Dame Margot Fonteyne, whose ballet career began before the invention of the wheel. speaks about Nijinsky, not Martha Graham or anyone in the 1930's, who wrote the first experimental ballet with Le Sacre du Printemps in 1913, the ballet to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring which caused a riot in Paris and played only 7 times. Fonteyne speaks carefully of the injustices heaped upon the young dancer and choreographer and then with Nijinsky's daughter Kyra about his subsequent institutionalization. She would die before the reconstruction of his incredible choreography was performed by the Joffrey Ballet. Kyra was alive but all roads lead to nowhere on her and I think she have gone mad. She seems half way there in this interview.
