UNCOVER Truth of Life in Edwardian Families | British Manor House || Documentary english subtitles
The early years of the twentieth century rank among the most peaceful in European history. In Britain's grand homes, Manor Houses it was a time of glamour, high society, and unfettered optimism. The British aristocracy enjoyed life on vast estates as they had done for centuries. Retinues of servants, beautiful houses, Manor Houses and fabulous costumes: the parties were extravagant, the scandal was infamous. It's no surprise that some of the most popular dramas to hit our screens have been set against this rich and colorful backdrop. In reality, however, the picture was less than golden; the historic order was starting to crumble. With World War One looming, and new technology, money, and ideas coming over from America, the British aristocracy were being threatened by deepening undercurrents of change as the nation stood at the brink of an upheaval so monumental that few could imagine it. Nowhere was this threat of change felt more acutely than within the confines of the British Manor House.
Exactly 100 years ago, the world of the British Manor House was at its height. It was a world of luxury that that has provided a majestic backdrop to a range of movies and popular costume dramas to this day. But what was really going on behind these stately walls and under the servants’ stairs? “Secrets of the Manor House” looks beyond the fiction to the truth of how life was in these ancient British houses, and how mounting financial, political and social pressures brought momentous changes to both the wealthy and their servants. The program covers the background of the British titled class in Edwardian times, the realities for servants working in their estates, Manor Houses the concept of the entail that passed estates to the next generation, the growing influence of American wealth in British aristocracy at the beginning of the 20th century, and the impact of the first world war on the social class system evident at a British country house.

I have been told that at least part of this film was shot in Cork (Ireland). The music is "Chanson du Soir" and "Arco Noir" from Harvey's Strings of Sorrow album.
Contrary to some comments, this video was not enhanced by BFI but by me. Various VirtualDub filters were used (deshaker, sharpener, contrast and brightness correction etc.), plus sophisticated frame interpolation software to correct the speed, as will as Infornition software to upscale the quality to full HD.

For the past fortnight or so, I’ve been thinking about doing some type of Victorian style makeup look, but then I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do a common woman during the Victorian age or a woman of royalty such as Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth. Therefore, I will be doing both, so this is only part 1. The next look in this genre will be one of royalty.

Edwardian era
The Edwardian era or Edwardian period in Great Britain is the period covering the reign of King Edward VII, 1901 to 1910, and is sometimes extended beyond Edward's death to include the four years leading up to World War I.
The death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 marked the end of the Victorian era. Edward was the leader of a fashionable elite that set a style influenced by the art and fashions of Continental Europe—perhaps because of the King's fondness for travel. The era was marked by significant shifts in politics as sections of society that had been largely excluded from wielding power in the past, such as common labourers and women, became increasingly politicised.
Samuel Hynes described the Edwardian Era as a "leisurely time when women wore picture hats and did not vote, when the rich were not ashamed to live conspicuously, and the sun really never set on the British flag'".
Perceptions
The Edwardian period is sometimes imagined as a romantic golden age of long summer afternoons and garden parties, basking in a sun that never sets on the British Empire. This perception was created in the 1920s and later by those who remembered the Edwardian age with nostalgia, looking back to their childhoods across the abyss of the Great War. The Edwardian age was also seen as a mediocre period of pleasure between the great achievements of the preceding Victorian age and the catastrophe of the following war. Recent assessments emphasise the great differences between the wealthy and the poor during the Edwardian era and describe the age as heralding great changes in political and social life. Robert Tressell's popular novel The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists is a strong example of the era's social critique.

England, Edwardian Era around 1900 (enhanced video)
This video has been dramatically enhanced in quality, using modern video editing tools. The film has been motion stabilized and the speed has been slowed down to correct speed (from 18 fps to 24 fps) using special frame interpolation software that re-creates missing frames. Upscaling to HD quality was done using video enhancer software. I have been told that at least part of this film was shot in Cork (Ireland). The music is "Chanson du Soir" and "Arco Noir" from Harvey's Strings of Sorrow album. Contrary to some comments, this video was not enhanced by BFI but by me. Various VirtualDub filters were used (deshaker, sharpener, contrast and brightness correction etc.), plus sophisticated frame interpolation software to correct the speed, as will as Infornition software to upscale the...

The early years of the twentieth century rank among the most peaceful in European history. In Britain's grand homes, Manor Houses it was a time of glamour, high society, and unfettered optimism. The British aristocracy enjoyed life on vast estates as they had done for centuries. Retinues of servants, beautiful houses, Manor Houses and fabulous costumes: the parties were extravagant, the scandal was infamous. It's no surprise that some of the most popular dramas to hit our screens have been set against this rich and colorful backdrop. In reality, however, the picture was less than golden; the historic order was starting to crumble. With World War One looming, and new technology, money, and ideas coming over from America, the British aristocracy were being threatened by deepening undercurrents of change as the nation stood at the brink of an upheaval so monumental that few could imagine it. Nowhere was this threat of change felt more acutely than within the confines of the British Manor House.
Exactly 100 years ago, the world of the British Manor House was at its height. It was a world of luxury that that has provided a majestic backdrop to a range of movies and popular costume dramas to this day. But what was really going on behind these stately walls and under the servants’ stairs? “Secrets of the Manor House” looks beyond the fiction to the truth of how life was in these ancient British houses, and how mounting financial, political and social pressures brought momentous changes to both the wealthy and their servants. The program covers the background of the British titled class in Edwardian times, the realities for servants working in their estates, Manor Houses the concept of the entail that passed estates to the next generation, the growing influence of American wealth in British aristocracy at the beginning of the 20th century, and the impact of the first world war on the social class system evident at a British country house.

A London family originally bought seven Old Miner cut diamonds in 1880 which the lady of the house requested to mount in a ring in 1910. Now over one hundred years have passed and the ring has remained in flawless condition (majority of it's life, this ring has spent in a security deposit box locked away safe and sound!). The large center diamond glimmers and glistens like a beacon of light, and its six diamond accents add additional shine in a total carat weight of 1ct. As an extra perk, the U-shaped prong frame helps reduce stress and wear to these immaculate diamonds, ensuring the ring will remain strong and preserved for years to come.
The ring height is 4 mm at the center diamond with an even shank thickness of 1 mm throughout. The center diamond is set in a thin bezel with the accent diamonds in a U-shaped fishtail 4-prong frame. The gallery displays extra detail on the side profile. The entire ring is made of platinum from 1910. Otherwise, this ring is in great condition and the diamonds will last a lifetime!

Here we have a beautiful piece, crafted in rose gold and housing a *stunning* gray sapphire cabochon in the center! One of the most unique elements of this ring is that it is crafted in 12k gold, which is commonly found in Eastern European countries. We purchased this in a recent estate buy from a family who migrated from Hungary back in the 1900s, and this specific jewel, belonging to Circa 1915 (along with many other jewels in the family's possession) has been in the family ever since! We are so fascinated by this tidbit :)
Hallmark: 12kt is visible inside the shank. The shank is also fairly thick. The cabachon measures 6.5mm, in a roundish-oval shape. Unique shape and GORGEOUS color of center stone. It is a very simple, yet unique ring. Comfortable fit when worn. Perfect for an engagement ring / promise-ring or an anniversary present! Amazing historical Edwardian jewel.
