Cruise control

Cruise control (sometimes known as speed control or autocruise, or tempomat in some countries) is a system that automatically controls the speed of a motor vehicle. The system is a servomechanism that takes over the throttle of the car to maintain a steady speed as set by the driver.

History

Speed control with a centrifugal governor was used in automobiles as early as 1900 in the Wilson-Pilcher and also in the 1910s by Peerless. Peerless advertised that their system would "maintain speed whether up hill or down". The technology was adopted by James Watt and Matthew Boulton in 1788 to control steam engines, but the use of governors dates at least back to the 17th century. On an engine the governor adjusts the throttle position as the speed of the engine changes with different loads, so as to maintain a near constant speed.

Modern cruise control (also known as a speedostat or tempomat) was invented in 1948 by the inventor and mechanical engineer Ralph Teetor. His idea was born out of the frustration of riding in a car driven by his lawyer, who kept speeding up and slowing down as he talked. The first car with Teetor's system was the 1958 Imperial (called "Auto-pilot") using a speed dial on the dashboard. This system calculated ground speed based on driveshaft rotations off the rotating speedometer-cable, and used a bi-directional screw-drive electric motor to vary throttle position as needed.

E=MC² (Mariah Carey album)

E=MC² is the eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released in the United States on April 15, 2008 by Island Records. The singer began recording the album in 2007 in Anguilla, after writing and composing most of its material during and after her 2006 Adventures of Mimi Tour. Carey worked with several notable songwriters and producers during the course of the project, including Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, Stargate, The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, Scott Storch and Danja.

The album revealed a more personal and intimate side of the singer, illustrated in its declarative theme of emancipation from her previous marriage, and from her personal and professional setbacks. Although it shared similar vocal production as well as an inclination to her signature pop and R&B ballads, the album also encompassed a variety of dance-oriented and uptempo styles. It was meant to be a continuation, or a second part of her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). Carey collaborated with a number of artists on the album, including T-Pain, Damian Marley and Young Jeezy. Though considered by critics very similar to the formula its predecessor had been built on, E=MC² included other genres she had never explored, such as reggae, and her continued recording of gospel-influenced hymns.

Cal Warner (Jason Gedrick) is a rookie police officer who has frightening nightmares after his friend and fellow police officer, Des Flynn (Gary Hudson), is killed under suspicious circumstances: the soul of Des enters into the body of Cal in order to seek revenge for his murder.

Cal is unaware of what is happening and seeks the help of a psychiatrist when he starts exhibiting unusual behavior. These nightmares lead Cal to uncover evidence of corruption and murder within the police department. Sarah Flynn (Kim Delaney) portrays the wife of the dead officer, Des.

The Force is a Grass Valley punk/hardcore band. Members Matt Wedgley (Viva Hate, Dirty Filthy Mugs), Hunter Burgan (AFI), Mark Roustabout (The Roustabouts), and Chad Cox were all in different punk bands before forming The Force in May 1995. Between 1996 and 1998, The Force released a 7", a 10"/CD and a split 7" as well as a number of songs on compilations. The Force split up in September, 1998. Since then, members of The Force have gone on to form or join several notable bands. On August 28–31, 2008, The Force reunited for the first time in ten years to play four shows in California. The Force also released a complete discography on 12" vinyl containing every song they ever recorded.
